This movie was based on a legend. You see in the early 1900s Russia was ruled by this king named Nicholas II. He had a wife and 4 daughters and a son. However in 1917 the people of Russia got tired of Nicholas II and his family and so they arrested them and executed them. But the body of the youngest daughter, Anastasia in that time was never found. Then a few years later a woman named Anna Anderson came forward and said that she was Anastasia. Some relatives of Nicholas II believed her, others didn't. She spend her whole claiming that she was Anastasia. She died in 1984 but years later they did a DNA test on her and determined that she was not related to Nicholas II and therefore she was not Anastasia. Then in 2007 Anastasia's skeleton was found and it confirmed that she died in 1917 with the rest of her family, and all those legends that she survived were just legends. So yeah. This movie has sure aged and now feels kind of bad taste.

@@phousefilms And the even crazier part is that Rasputin did actually "put a curse" on the Romanov's. He declared that if he were killed by any member of the royal family, then the royal family would die within a year. He was murdered by the Czar's cousin(I think if I remember correctly?). Rasputin was poisoned, shot, and eventually drowned when the other means were not killing him. And sadly the Romanov's were killed, just like Rasputin "predicted".

Fun fact about music and memory: music is stored in a completely different part of the brain than where it stores most memories. I work in a memory care unit at an assisted living facility, and our patients with dementia almost always remember the lyrics to their favorite songs, even if they've forgotten most other things. We have used music to help pull some residents out of panic moments when they can't remember anything else, and it helps to ground them. We also use music to help them remember things about their daily routines. Music is very powerful when it comes to memory! I love how they actually incorporated this when it comes to Anastasia's memory. She remembers her grandmother's song, she remembers the smells, and THEN she remembers everything she's forgotten. Very powerful!

@@LakiaJaiTV it's very loosely based. The Romanoffs were pretty unpopular (Nikolas wasn't a great Tzar, and in the eyes of the impoverished people the royal family needed to be gotten rid of.) Rasputin was actually a close friend of the family (he was a pretty corrupt holy man, with way too much political influence, but he was good at helping Alexei (who was pretty sickly at times), so the family trusted him. He was one of the many reasons they were unpopular). Anyway, in 1917, the communist revolution happened. The family were overthrown and imprisoned- they basically lived under house arrest for about 2 years, before being executed. For decades, there was a rumour that Anastasia escaped; sadly, her remains were later found, buried in a separate pit.

The saddest thing is that the family were not really awful rulers (besides the dealings with Rasputin). The queen and several of her daughters served as nurses during the war. However the political environment changed. The family in fact lived for several years under house arrest while they tried to figure out what to do with them. The fact that they ended up carrying out the murder in the night and tried so hard to cover it up means that they did know what they were doing wasn't right.

Also this movie is a very inaccurate telling of history, the Russian revolution was actually very peaceful and the Romanov's were first kept in a home left to luxury, the Tsar only had to abdicate the throne and be a rich dude, but unfortunately the guards got drunk and executed them without orders (it is unclear if Lenin ordered them to be executed or not). 12:37 First sign that that was a dream - Alexei would never have been allowed to do that. Don't know if it's a case of Anastasia not having her full memories back or the writers not doing their research but Alexei was born with haemophilia, he could never do something like jump from a great high or run where he'd risk bleeding on the outside or the inside. There was no cure or treatment for it then and likely not now. He bleeds excessively when he cuts himself, his blood won't clot, but the most dangerous thing is when he bleeds inside, he'd never be allowed to do anything like what he was doing in this dream. THat's why they kept Rasputin at court for so long, he seemed to be able to cure it or at least stop it from becoming too serious. They remembered it in the stage musical adaption, he fell at the ball scene and everyone went quiet.

So this is LOOSELY based on the real myth that Anastasia survived the assassination of her family and actually lived. There was a woman who claimed to be Anastasia in the early 20th century and convinced a lot of people. The whole story is very sad, this movie is very romantic. But I would still look up the real story behind this.

The Historian in me is consistently furious at the depiction of Nicholas, Rasputin, the Revolution and honestly the premise in general. The animation nerd in me loves how beautiful some of these shots and landscapes are. The song enthusiast in me has a love-hate relationship with the songs in this movie. And the bisexual in me is deeply conflicted over whether Dimitri or Anastasia is the hotter one. To summarise, this movie makes me feel things and I think that’s good but I’m not sure. 😂

@@Nympthethereal Of course, he was not a DEMONIC villain, but in the eyes of the people around the royal family, he was quite dangerous. He had a great influence on the royal family, due to the fact that he was practically the only one who could help Alexei in his illness. Plus, in Russia they have always treated God's people well (and sometimes with reverence). But he did not live at all righteously, he loved to go to prostitutes and generally behaved quite cheekily, denigrating the Orthodox faith with his behavior.

@@Nympthethereal What he did? Killed them? Well THIS you ask the scriptwriters of this cartoon. In reality, Grigory Rasputin was killed by conspirators in 1916 and he naturally has nothing to do with the murder of the royal family. However, Anastasia, in reality, was killed along with the entire royal family, and did not remain alive and with loss of memory.

If you were wondering why the Prince was walking so funny during the song sequence, it was probably an animation error. But it could also be a shout out to history, Alexei Romanov, the prince from her memories was a hemophiliac and a year before the Royal family was wiped out he had some kind of bleeding into his stomach that left him maimed. The real Anastasia Romanov was genuinely believed missing for something like ninety years and people always wanted to believe she survived. Turns out she was killed with the rest of her family but her body was dumped in a different location. Lenin had them all annihilated to avoid anyone using them as a rallying cry to around which people could build a rebellion against him. He was the real villain not some crazy mountain shaman.
@edithmargaretjones585
@edithmargaretjones585 3 жыл бұрын
The movie is actually based on the real story of the Romanovs. Anastasia's story line is based on how many people believe Alexi(her brother) escaped but they made it Anastasia so they could have a romance. Rasputin was a mystic and they originally were friends with Rasputin cuz he helped Alexi during his bleeding spells, but then he got into some bad things so they banished him - hence why he was mad.

12:37 Fun fact: Anastasia's only brother, the young Prince Alexei, had hemophilia, a death-sentence at the time, as any bump or scratch could lead to days and days of unstoppable bleeding, even death. The family were terrified that the public would discover the only heir to the throne could die without a moment's notice, so things like sports, swimming, anything that could result in a bruise, were forbidden. That's the first sign that something is "off" in the dream, that it's not just a pleasant memory but a fake one planted by Rasputin - Anya's family never would have let Alexei swim. Rasputin first got in with the royal family when he managed to (or most likely, appeared to) stop Alexei's bleeding fits on several occasions. Growing increasingly alienated from the interests of their subjects, the Romanovs (Czarina Alexandra, Anastasia's mother, in particular) followed Rasputin's dogma alone, and the friends of the family were so horrified by what this could mean for the family (and all of Russia) that they personally murdered Rasputin. It is said it took several bullets and a drowning in a frozen lake to finally kill him. This explains all the opening scenes in this movie: Rasputin's evil is magic-ified and this dark time in Russia's history is made somewhat kid friendly by changing the murder to an accident on the ice, and never showing what happened to the rest of her family (in reality, they were shot, stabbed, stripped naked, possibly violated, and dumped in a mass grave by Stalin's supporters).

The way noble houses work is that you inherit it from your father and you remain part of it for life. A daughter thus retains her father's house regardless of which family she marries into. Anastasia's paternal grandmother was Maria Feodorovna, a Danish princess and therefore a member of the House of Glücksburg not the house of Romanov (although both are branches of the house of Oldenburg).
