I feel so bad for Shelly Duvall (Danny's mom) because when they were filming this movie Kubrick kept intentionally scaring her on set and treated her badly so she stay in character. The scene where she hits Jack with the back took so many takes and she almost had nervous breakdowns on set

Kubrick didn't abuse anyone, that's classic internet bullshit. In the making of all you see is that he was annoyed by her because she was constantly wasting the crew's time. She was jealous of Nicholson and she would intentionally being disrupting. Kubrick was pushing just like any other actor he ever worked with. She wasn't having any nervous breakdown on set, she had mental issues she never disclosed on set and never talked about until years later. Many other scenes in The Shining took a lot of takes and she did them all without any breakdowns.

Two things #1. Fun fact: The kid that plays Danny didn't know that they were filming a horror movie, the people in charge didn't want to traumatize him so he thought they were filming a boring hotel movie. #2. I like this movie because you don't know if Jack is going crazy because the hotel is haunted and he's being possessed and seeing all the ghosts or if the Isolation is truly getting to Jack which causes him to hallucinate everything,

The most unsettling thing about this movie is that the hotel itself is the malicious entity. All those random people that showed up at the ending chase scene, and potentially all of the people in that old photograph, are all victims claimed by the hotel over the years. The hotel was built over top an ancient Native American burial site which is why it is cursed.

well yes and no. I think the terrifying element of the Hotel is that is causes its victims to kill each other, and only really tips Jack over the line. He was an alcoholic and had history of rough-handedness with Danny in the past, the Hotel brought out in Jack what was always there. I think this decision to blend the supernatural dark forces of the Hotel with Jack's pre-existing character as an abusive father is genius as it allows the true forces of evil in the world (domestic abuse, alcoholism, child abuse) to exist on an even higher, terrifying level.

in the books there is a more to Tony. Danny's middle name is "Anthony", which "Tony" is short for. I n the future, Danny was having nightmares about when he was a child at the Overlook. He would warn him in the dream about things. Not realizing HE was Tony talking to himself from the future...

But not for the film. It makes no sense in the film that Tony is 'future Danny'. Why would future Danny call his own mother 'Mrs. Torrence'? What is creepy about Danny being possessed by himself? Why would Danny keep Tony's identity from himself? It's never mentioned in either the book or the film of Doctor Sleep.

@@Ocrilat what if it's like you going back in time to warn yourself about dangerous events that'll happen in the future. You can't just walk up to your parents and be like hey mom and dad because 1 they'll think you are crazy 2 it'll be hard to do so without messing up the past too much. So you call your parents by their last name cause it's polite at the same time looking over your past self. Honestly it's prolly just Danny's conscious cause that happens when kids go through traffic things or makes it easier to convey mentions. They prolly added the future element cause it sound cool that's why in the movie at least they just kept it as a little boy living in Danny's mouth.

@@lizzyrank5405 Lol I think if I was an adult and was able to talk to my mother in the past, I wouldn't call her 'Mrs. Torrance'. It's unnatural, not 'polite'. I might call her 'Wendy'. Do you call your mother 'Mrs. Surname'? But this wouldn't be a discussion if you weren't trying to justify it to match the book. Again, the scene in the film where Tony possesses Danny is creepy as hell...but it isn't creepy in any way if it's just Danny doing it. In the film, it doesn't make any sense if Tony is Future-Dan, and actually makes the film worse if you assume it. So why assume it? Tony is creepy because we don't really know who or what he is. Watch The Shining Miniseries to see how lame Stephen King's version of his book is on film lol.

The way I understood it reading the original book, Tony was a part of Danny, like his higher self or the part that's more aware and in touch with his gift. Like his superego or whatever. It's been a while though and I could be remembering wrong.

@@Filbi Yea, I haven't read the book in a million years, but I think King said that grown-up Danny WAS Tony, trying to help his younger self through this difficult time. Honestly I don't remember it actually being in the book. But the film is pretty different, and it's pretty clear that it wasn't Kubrick's intension that 'Tony is actually grown-up Danny'. Actually, I think your superego idea is better than King's. In the film, we don't know what Tony is...and that really works.

Kubrick made Duvall (the mom) do the baseball scene 127x - and yes, Kubrick put her through the wringer - lots of sources say that. - interesting tidbit, Jack Nicholson had been a volunteer fireman and the crew had to make a tough door because he was actually good at breaking through normal ones with a fire ax.

@@alharairah2214 The only source for abuse is the behind the scenes film made by Vivian Kubrick. All the claims come from this, and they all come from selectively editing that film, or taking scenes from it out of context. On the ''bat' scene, Kubrick did do a lot of takes, but a couple of things. 1. Kubrick filmed rehearsals and warm-ups...and they all counted as 'takes'. 2. The number is exaggerated...the camera operator at the time (Garrett Brown) and the assistant editor (Gordon Stainforth) both say that there were a lot of takes for that scene, but it was between 35 - 45 takes, not 127. 3. So what? A lot of takes were made...why is this 'abuse'? Kubrick wanted each scene done in a variety of ways, and also allowed the actors to try things they wanted to try. Why is this a bad thing? They're actors...they get paid to act. On Nicholson and the door...so what? Nicholson was a volunteer firefighter, and knew how to use an axe properly. So they toughened up the prop door so the scene went on long enough...what's your problem with that? Again, you remove the context (or don't know it) and imagine it's a bad thing. It's not.

I had a friend who once dislocated his kid's shoulder in the same way Jack did to Danny. He told me "it's actually a very common injury for kids, because their shoulder joint hasn't matured yet". And I thought "oh, okay, I guess I could see that." A year later, and sure enough, I accidentally overhear this "friend" screaming at and berating his child, sounding like an absolute monster when he thought no one was around. Trust your gut and take warning signs seriously, that's all I'm saying.

Toby is Danny's conscious trying to not only shield danny from his powers cause they can traumatize him but make sense of things. It's just Danny's way of communication whats happening to him looks of kids have this either as imaginary friends or toys that van talk to damny has a boy in his mouth and his finger. Tony is just there to help and warn danny of danger.

The Overlook Hotel was built on a sacred Indian burial ground and the construction workers had to repel attacks from the natives in that area who tried to stop it from being built. So the hotel itself became cursed and drew in a lot of evil people. Jack, like others, are drawn back to this hotel through reincarnation over and over again and that's why you see his picture there back in 1921. He came back to recreate more horror and terror in that hotel with his current family.

In the ending the reason Jack is in the photo is because he was consumed by the evil of the hotel and now is part of the hotel now he's always been the caretaker

I always figured the hotel isn't haunted in the usual sense, the 'ghosts' are all just remixes of people the hotel has eaten/will eat. That's why the two little girls are eight and ten in the story but twins when Danny runs into them, that's why Jack recognizes Lloyd even though he's never been to the Overlook before, and that's why Jack's 'always been the caretaker' even though Grady used to be - that's not Grady in the bathroom, that's the hotel wearing a Grady suit. Time in the hotel doesn't run linearly, all the bad shit is happening at once; it will happen, it's happening, it's already happened. That's why the movie shows us title cards telling us the days of the week - to call attention to how little that information matters, and how the days blend together.

There is a theory that the Mom is actually going crazy and every scene where furniture moves is actually when the Mom is having a crazy moment in her mind. Like when she walks in the first time to talk about the weather with Jack and he's all rude.... the mom is actually having that conversation in her mind. Which is why Jack is all "wtf..." afterward. From his perspective, she walks in, stands there and then leaves.

The kid playing Danny, his first name is actually Danny. I didn't get the ending at first either but I slowly learned that he's been adopted as one of the many ghosts of the hotel. And he was basically reincarnated. If you remember, the guy that massacred his wife and two kids was named Charles Grady, not Delbert Grady.

U should really check out the sequel, and yes this movie has a sequel. It’s called “Doctors Sleep” it kinda follows the story of what happened to Danny after the first movie and goes into the deeper lore behind “The Shining” ability. It kinda strays from the original horror genre but it’s worth a watch.

This was the movie that Stephen King didn’t like because it was just so vastly different from the book Kubrick really made this movie into his own the book was honestly a lot more sentimental and less horror I guess than the movie Stephen King describe the movie as extremely dark and mean spirited which isn’t the tone he was going for with his book but both are great pieces of horror culture even at different ends of the horror spectrum

The Shining is a great movie, but a bad adaptation. The horror in the book is supposed to be about this man who is trying to be a good dad and husband be driven crazy by the hotel. In the movie, Jack Nicholson seems two seconds away from homocide as soon as you see him. Having seen King's version, MAN, does it have some corny moments that just diminish the scare factor.

Fun fact about this movie: Both Jack and Danny coincidentally have the same first names as their actors! Also, he said "HEEEEERE'S JOHNNY!" as a reference to a the Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson. The announcer would famously start each show by saying "Heeeere's Johnny!", and then Johnny Carson would step out on stage. So it was Jack's way of cruelly taunting Wendy about the fact that he was about to unlock the door and come in.

The ending explained is that Jack Torrance and Delbert Grady (Charles Grady) are reincarnated that's what Delbert meant by "you've always been the caretaker" but the hotel is built on top of a native american burial ground so that explains all the native american culture around the hotel but jack and delbert are reincarnated and that's why the picture in the end is jack in the 1920s

Another great Jack Nicholson movie is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Not necessarily scary, but the idea of what happened in the movie actually happened to real people in history makes it chilling. And yes it is funny that he plays a character named Jack when his name is really Jack, but it wasn't the last time. He also played Jack Napier, aka The Joker, in the 1989 Batman.

The director tormented Shelley Duvall to keep her highly emotional at all times and told the crew to never comfort her, she said in a recent interview that she had days when she cried for 24 hours straight and making this movie is what a lot of people believe triggered her mental health issues that she is still suffering from today. He wound make them film scenes over and over like the stair scene that was filmed 125 times. I noticed on a more recent viewing that there is a door in jack and Wendy’s bedroom that leads into the hallway so Wendy could have just waited for jack to break through the other door and enter the apartment and she and Danny could have run out into the hallway.

Fun fact: The reason why Jack went crazy was because he had the shining too only thing is is that his ability was too strong for him so he drank to subdue his abilities and due to losing his job as a teacher ( I don’t know if this started his alcohol problem but I think it started after he lost his job as an English teacher not too sure about that but) causing him to abuse alcohol but when he realized he hurt his son he got sober. After getting sober he got the job at the hotel and due to the spirits of the hotel isolated him and started tormenting him because of his ability then eventually later the spirit of the hotel took over causing him to become possessed and ultimately destroyed him and Lloyd was his mister torrents Fan theory: it’s a stretch and I know it is, but get this and hear me out: What if Jack is the older version of the little boy from black phone and realized he had the same power as his sister but denied it because of his drunk father who abused his little sister with the same power as his son Danny.

She wasn't having any nervous breakdown on set, she had mental issues she never disclosed on set and never talked about until years later. Many other scenes in The Shining took a lot of takes and she did them all without any breakdowns. In every film he's made, Kubrick always had scenes that went over 100 takes, the stair one wasn't any different. Shelley Duvall had serious mental issues years after the film and she gave many different versions of the story that don't add up with accounts given from other people and also given by herself, as at one point she dismissed her own comments and defended Kubrick.

At 3:30, when you put in that little synth chord, that made me laugh so hard, you have no idea. Who is that little actor today, you ask? He's a science professor at a college! Danny grew up to be ok! :D /16:42 - This is the most perceptive and accurate thing I've ever heard someone say about the character of Jack Torrance, at least the Kubrick/Nicholson version of Jack Torrance. I've always thought the same thing. That is actually one of the reasons Stephen King doesn't like this version, although Jack is still a flawed, dark character right from the beginning of the book just as he is in the movie. /The ending? You answered it yourself at 18:09! / "Here's Johnny" was the catchphrase from The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. In the intro, they'd say "Heeeere's Johnny!" and Carson would come out and do his monologue. So Jack is quoting that. ("Jack" is a derivative of "John".) / As far as Stephen King movies that I WOULD love for you to do: "Carrie" (1976) Oh my gosh, you would KILL on that movie. Seriously! Definitely add that to the list, you will have SO MUCH to say about that movie. Also "Rosemary's Baby" (1968)(not a Stephen King thing, but an amazing psychological horror movie that is super creepy). The other Stephen King movie is "Creepshow" (1983) which is SO fun, SO good, it's five Stephen King stories in one movie, Stephen King even acts in it. It's a really fun horror movie. For Jack Nicholson, oh my gosh, PLEASE do his most iconic role: "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". But Lakia.....keep a hanky nearby. lol. I hope you go back and hit the classics from the 90s, the 80s, the 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, etc etc, lol. I'm telling you, there are gems going back over a hundred years (although I don't expect you to go back THAT far!) (but don't let me stop you! Charles Grady murdered his family and committed suicide in the 1970s, well after Jack was born. So it couldn't be literal reincarnation. To make it more confusing is that Jack meets Delbert Grady in the bathroom.

where'd that tennis ball come from...good question...it's definitely Jack's ball..and his reaction when she accuses him, he doesn't instantly deny it, at all, just speechless cos he's been caught. And i'll just say all the "ghosts" he sees can be seen as his fantasies...though only one turns horrific to him when thought's of Danny intrude. Jack's always facing a mirror when he see's the ghosts. and there's several logical explanations to how Jack got out of the storeroom without there actually being ghosts. It's well worth coming back to this film at a later date as it has so many little details that lead to various conclusions about what has happened at the hotel.

You might be interested in reading the original book "The Shining". It gives a lot of history of the hotel and of the Torrance family (and your comment about their relationship isn't so far off). The book had a different ending. This was the movie that Stephen King was unhappy with (as most authors of Stanley Kubrick adaptions wind up being). Doctor Sleep was actually a sequel to the book and not this movie.
