What they don't tell you is that this is the light version. Read the book and alot of 'good guys' in this movie are FAR from good in the book...they had to tone it down soooo much. Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best of Disney's work and the voice actors were amazing, all of them. Oh and gypsy is an offensive term for the Romani. Kinda like... the well, there are racist words for every race. The priest was in Beauty and the Beast, there was Cogsworth :) And Demi Moore was Esmerelda.

"Gypsies" is what they called the Roma (or Romani), an ethnic group in Europe. They were called "gypsies" because they were thought to be from Egypt. These days it's preferred not to call them that because the term is inaccurate, as they actually came from India. Anyway, most Roma are dark-skinned, if you're wondering how other people can tell. Their traditional dress is also a tip-off too (at least in the medieval setting). Edit: yes, I'm aware that some Roma are not offended by the term gypsy and even refer to themselves as such. However, while living in Romania I was told that if I didn't know the individual's preference, "Roma" was more respectful. And I only heard "gypsy" when my white Romanian classmates were talking trash about them. So my preference not to say "gypsy" is really due to the culture I was raised in. You are right though that as a white person I am not the ideal spokesperson. I am just repeating what I was taught while living in a country with a high Roma population.

Just to add, the Roma are a community, a people that would consider themselves to be different and have chosen to retain their Culture and ways by living and marring almost exclusively amongst themselves. They have done this for centuries. Because the Culture remained separated it had specific ways of dress, adornment, language,, manner,lifestyle,values, and standards that were partcular and identifiable by those outside it. They have adopted some things from outside the original culture, but reinterpreted it, putting their stamp on it,making it still an identifier. There are several communities in Europe, England Ireland and North America from my understanding, where they mostly live an updated version of the same way they always have. And are fiercely proud and one might say uncompromising in their History, Culture and Lifestyle.

@jaistashu15603 жыл бұрын
I didn't understand it when I was younger, but now that I'm older, I can see that if Quasimodo had gotten with Esmeralda, it would've framed Esmeralda as a trophy. We see Quasimodo respecting Esmeralda's decision to be with Phoebus, and what Quasimodo really needed was acceptance. That's what he was rewarded with at the end.
@konanxhidan32023 жыл бұрын
I really hate how Disney portrayed Phoebus as a hero so they could pair Esmeralda with him instead with the deformed Quasimodo (who was actually the *ONLY* person who cared for her). Disney ignore the fact that Phoebus was also the reason why she died in the book. He was always cheating on his fiance, was only interested on Esmeralda because he wanted to take her virginity (and throw her away after that) and couldn't care less that she died for a crime she never committed. *He NEVER helped her.*
@jaistashu15603 жыл бұрын
@@konanxhidan3202 Okay, yeah, but there's SOOOOO much different from the original Victor Hugo work that it isn't a problem (in my eyes) that Phoebus is a hero here in Disney's Hunchback. Now, if he didn't do anything heroic in this movie and only wanted Esmeralda's virginity and STILL ended up with her, then that'd be screwed up, but that's not what happens. In the movie, Phoebus DOES help Esmeralda, and their developing romance is consensual and mutual (fast, too, but that's just Disney). It doesn't really make sense to be mad about this change because Hunchback is so radically different from La Notre Dame de Paris down to the message, theme, characterizations, etc. It's so different that it's like comparing Harry Potter with Game of Thrones. Both are fantasy, both have magic, both have death/killing. Disney's Hunchback is basically fan fiction set in an AU of La Notre Dame de Paris in which the fan writer has changed the genre and wanted to focus on the hunchback and how cool his story could be if he were the main character. Actually, it's a fan fiction of another fan work--the Hunchback comic published decades ago. My point is that it doesn't make sense to be mad about this adaptation change because Pheobus isn't that terrible person in Disney's Hunchback, and the change isn't romanticizing cheating or being a terrible person. Additionally, the point of the original work was to say that buildings have history, and we shouldn't tear down old architecture. Disney's Hunchback's point/theme is heavily focused on justice. Why get angry about a character who only shares the same name with a terrible person in an entirely different text? The characterizations are entirely different--opposite, even. Jerk-Phoebus had no place in a Disney movie focused on justice, so he was altered into a decent person/left out entirely. P.S. If Quasimodo got Esmeralda, then that would support/defend/embolden jerks who whine about the friendzone. "I cared about you, so you have to be my girlfriend!" What Quasimodo needed was acceptance, not a romantic relationship, and that's exactly what he was rewarded with at the end.
@vitoriadias79903 жыл бұрын
@@konanxhidan3202 Esmeralda also wasn't that nice of a girl in the book, she didn't even like Quasi. And Quasimodo was super obssessed with her. Also, they both died alongside Frollo in the book. @brigidtheirish2 жыл бұрын
It also examines the Madonna-Whore Complex trope. Frollo sees Esmeralda as a whore. Quasi sees Esmeralda as a Madonna. Phoebus sees Esmeralda as a person and so is the one Esmeralda chooses. When I was younger, I always wondered why Quasi and Esmeralda didn't end up together. But now that I'm older, I've realized that that separates him from Frollo. Quasi cares for her and values her friendship and is willing to let her go. His arc is about finding acceptance in himself, not seeing himself as the monster, and for people seeing his true humanity passed his looks. Frollo would rather possess Esmeralda, thus, making him the real monster of the story. Also, Quasi is played by the actor who played Mozart in that movie Amadeus (I think that's the name but not sure), for those who are wondering.

@nkbujvytcygvujno60063 жыл бұрын
There’s a theory that Quasi was abandoned by his birth parents for his appearance and then adopted by that gypsy woman. That sort of thing did happen sometimes. (And then people would use the gypsies’ kindness to say, “See, evil gypsies steal children! They’ll take you away when you’re bad!”) I think that theory holds a bit more water than Quasi being an albino. Albinos can’t produce any melanin, he wouldn’t have red hair if that was the case.

I know that either in the book or the musical (don't remember which one) Quasi is actually the son of Frollo's brother. His brother ran away from home and fell in love with a romani woman. And after he died Frollo started to loathe all romani people thinking the woman was the reason his brother is dead. Maybe that's how he would get red hair. One parent caucasian and the other romani.

@sassyseraphify3 жыл бұрын
There is a very real, thematic reason why Quasi didn't drop Frollo when he had the chance (or otherwise hurt him throughout the film). The lesson of the story is "who is the monster and who is the man." Frollo's line before dying makes it clear as well. "he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pits" right before the demon-faced architectural piece springs to life to do just that. Frollo is "the wicked" and to offset that, Quasi had to be pure of heart/sin. Letting Frollo fall would be tantamount to killing and so Quasi wouldn't have the same contrast in the end and thus it would further muddy the point that Frollo was the monster.
@lilenwasnothere68673 жыл бұрын
spoilers for the musical: in the musical, quasimodo kills frollo himself by throwing down the cathedral after esmeralda dies. that version of frollo is simultaneously more sympathetic and somehow worse than the animated version, as he is even more human.

@randomblasian59432 жыл бұрын
@@charliearcher5029 actually that’s a misconception. They originated from India which is why they have darker skin and different ways of dress. They were called gypsies because it was believed they originated from Egypt. The name Romani (or Roma) is the name that was adopted for them because there is a large portion of their community that currently live and have lived in Romania for centuries. The term Romani or Roma is used for them more often now because the term gypsy is not only incorrect since they didn’t come from Egypt but it also has a negative connotation to it due to the hundred of years of it being used to degrade them

That spot where Frodo and Phoebus were captured by the Romani, that was the catacombs of Paris. They set the Court of Miracles up there because the catacombs are a well-known maze where people have simply disappeared because they’re so complex. So the soldiers/Frollo needed to be led there or they would never have found the Court. Edit: just to clarify, the catacombs are where they put all the dead bodies of people who died during plagues and other things during the long history of the city. Mostly plagues.

Gipsies, or more elegantly and less rudely Romani, are a nomadic ethnic group from India that settled down in Europe in the middle ages. While usually associated with fortune-telling, dancing, and music most of them made a living as tinmen and other artisan's producing cheap everyday goods. This did not sit well with the proud guild artisans of Europe and since they weren't even part of the Judeo-Christian culture they were looked down on. Later the development of manufacturing and even later the industrial revolution ran them out of business forcing them to the edge of society. They are still around in Europe in a considerable population, but unfortunately, they have still not recovered, and live with a few exceptions mostly below the poverty line. Also unfortunately harsh racism is still very common against them.
