For people annoyed at how Sagiri seems super strong in EP1 but super useless now.... remember how this show is a masterclass in misdirection. In EP1 we saw how Gabimaru's story did a complete 180. And how everyone expected Eizen to be an important strong character but is literally the first Asaemon to die. By now most people are thinking "oh, Sagiri is the stereotypical female lead that is super strong in Ep1 but becomes an irrelevant damsel in distress for the rest of the series...." Don't worry, many manga readers consider Sagiri to be the BEST female protagonist ever for good reasons. We should start to see a glimpse of it in the next episode (EP5).

She fainted cause its realistic. We got a bit of her backstory last episode. She has her own problems different from Gabimaru and we also know that she is the lowest ranked of the Asaemon. But her main issue is her mental barrier she has to overcome. So there is room to grow and stuff to overcome and thats what we want to see. And there could also be the reason she fainted cause she might have been affected by the island or even bitten by something. The same is true for Gabimaru. You say he was badass when he killed all these enemies and maybe it looked like that on the first glance but if you look deeper he might just have died if he wasnt saved there at the end. And thats just cause he didnt stick to his principles to not fight unknown enemies and to not save her.

The reason Yuzuriha is the best girl is obvious. But Sagiri is not far behind, her character development is really good throughout the series. Just have patience. Also Chobei is one of the best older brother in all of anime/manga, on the level of Edward Elric in my opinion. The Aza brothers just rock, you will love them even more later.

As an anime only and who has heard praises for this series' strength of writing competent and strong characters, I would like to disagree with your point about Sagiri. She is dealing with her own mindset about taking another person's life while still being a executioner herself. It would be unrealistic to change her mindset in span of 2 episodes. She needs to steel her resolve. Otherwise, she would contradict herself. Also her fainting seems reasonable enough. If you look carefully enough, you can see that she was hit by the insects' spores(?). They tends to create hallucinations and other various ailments.

The other comments already explained why Sagiri fainted so I'll talk about the "women being damsels in distress" in general. For me I don't see it as a misogyny thing, it's just that women in most animes aren't really fighters or just aren't used to that lifestyle than men. I mean if they were, they wouldn't be depicted as "weak", take Maki or Nobara in JJK for example, or Mitsuri in Demon Slayer, Unohana in Bleach etc. There are a lot of them and they are used to fighting thus they are never portayed as being "damsels in distress". And tbh this goes out to men too. We've seen men in anime who aren't really fighters struggle a lot and are even the ones being saved more often than not. So this "damsel in distress" thing isn't exclusive for women. And if there are female characters that are really fighters, then they are depicted as such. Same thing with male characters, if they aren't like that, then they're depicted as such too. Basically my point is it has nothing to do with gender, but rather with the characters' capabilities themselves.

First, I don't like the fact that her character depends so heavily on another character. Second, that is the only thing going for her for the duration of the whole story. The fact that she is Ackerman and Japanese princess is majorly irrelevant for some reason. So I consider her very boring and wasted because of that. And it would feel better if she was a side character, but she is of the main trio.

Wrong example. Mikasa is very strong as well as beautiful character. Her whole internal conflicts about her identity which leads to her development in s4 alone proves you wrong. As for earlier seasons except s1, I agree with you but s 4 aftermath of eren's manipulation about her identity, her whole character started to get more complex with all these self doubts and identity crises as well as showcase of vulnerability. Spoiler 138 is one of the best chapter which solidify her as one of the best female shounen protagonist.

She finally mastered her strength to kill Eren, but then in chapter 139 she still wears his scarf and takes her family to his grave after decades, even though he is basically Hitler of that world, why the fuck would you bring your family to him. All her internal conflicts are about "do I really love Eren or am I a slave cause of Ackerman" which brought by Eren's bullshitting about how it all works. We don't spend much on her pondering should she kill Eren or not either, she just gets sad and silent when Anny asks her about it and they move on, then at the end she kills him, so the conflict isn't even executed in an interesting way, she just REALLY forced to do it, cause he is massive genocidal machine at that point. If she could at least talk to Eren, to debate, throw some arguments at him, her feelings, her frustrations, but nope. The only time I remember her opposing him, trying to beat some senses into him, to teach him something was season one. That's all. After that she just started running around for him without any results like a puppy. You could write whole essay about her wasted potential, seriously, but she is badass, amiright?

There are a lot of strong op female characters in anime, it's just that the fans focus on the male characters and they are always the MCs. There needs to be more shonen with female leads that are OP not just the male MCS. On ur rant I have a way of thinking about it that might help you. With our social conditioning if we see a man going through weakness in the beginning of a story we immediately think “I can’t wait to see how much this character will grow” but with a woman our thought is “oh, she is one of those useless female characters”. So try and recognize that and think about what the story is trying to say with a character being weak. I have no spoilers on this story but I would assume she is super hesitant right now and that is holding her back so some event should occur that will free her. So to me the best course of action is to look forward to that moment instead of a character’s current shortcomings. If the story continues to have her stay alive with Gabimaru saving her over and over then it betrays its own themes unless he ends up dying in the process and that is her defining moment. If none of those things happen then the story is has earned huge criticism.

In history, kunoichi relies on their sex appeals to take down their enemies. That's why you gotta be beautiful in order to become one and get into bed with your target in order to kill or gather information. I personally don't think this makes them any weaker, they just have a different method of fighting than men. The reality is, women can't be as good of a fighter as men. While sure it's anime so it doesn't need to follow realism, many stories are still built upon the real world so it's not surprising to see many having real-world view in there, especially the world view of that particular era which can be seen a lot on the female executioner, since women are only supposed to marry and become mothers/wives in that era, not holding a sword. And just in case I get flamed for this, I'm a woman too.

I actually prefer this shows animation over Mappa's big hitters like AoT and CSM just because its more consistent. Isnt something like nier a female gojo? I havent played the game or finished the anime im just speculating from the few ep I saw as shes the main character and a pretty good fighter.

I get that folks who read the manga know everything that's coming and say, "Just wait, you'll see," and that's fine . Maybe later in the anime she'll redeem herself but, right now, she's annoying. Its the same situation as with Kobeni in Chainsaw Man. She was 100% useless and annoying for several episodes until she finally had a redeeming moment. The fact that someone knows what's coming somewhere down the road doesn't change what the character is RIGHT NOW in the story line.

You don’t even have to be a manga reader to see that she will have a development too? Since the episode 1 and especially 2 we got her backstory and POV that make us understand that she is the type to hesitate and that she is the youngest executioner. Removing all her badass moments just because she fainted in this episode is annoying. (Especially when their is a explanation of her fainting)

Sagiri in this episode was amazed me. She is so weak and useless like Sakura at early Naruto series 🤣. I mean, she's mentally and technically weak! At first, I hope she will get mental developments soon, the others can be later. Because, the way she is now is so pathetic and far from your dream of a badass female character.
