Maharashtra is where it all began as a way of uniting the people against the British Empire. Its a festival that is being celebrated over a 100 years and is growing stronger, bigger and powerful with each passing year. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha, son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Many groups and families bring Ganpati idols of different styles to the households. People exhibit their creativity and talent in decorating the surroundings of Ganesha. Nowadays people have also started holding photography competitions in which the youth participate wholeheartedly. It is an auspicious time of the year when people come together to celebrate and at the same time pray to seek blessings of their beloved God, Ganesha. Lalbaug, Parel and Girgaon are said to be the prime Ganpati locations. The Lalbaug Cha Raja is possibly the most famous Ganpati of them all because it is said to make miracles. Many devotees have had their wishes fulfilled here and as a token of gratitude make huge donations and contributions in cash, jewellery, gold or even diamonds! All of the treasures collected are then put to good use primarily for social causes. Other Ganpatis include the Mumbai Cha Raja or Ganesh Gully Cha Ganpati and the Chinchpokli Cha Raja. The atmosphere is full of positive vibes and one can't help but dance to the tunes of it. Normally it takes around 2-3 hours for seeking darshan of Lalbaug Cha Raja because it attracts really massive, giant crowds but the day on which I visited was one of the rare occasions when Mumbai had shut down owing to heavy incessant rains. Owing to this many people chose either to stay at home or their office rather than venturing out in the storm.
