Lallybroch, Midhope Castle - Outlander

Lallybroch, the home of Jamie Fraser in the hit TV series Outlander. I found some of the tv locations while on Holiday in the UK xmas 2016. This location is otherwise known as Midhope Castle. The first reference to this property is back in 1458 known then as Medhope. John Martyne Built this and remained until his death in 1478. When it passed over to Henry Levingstone.
In 1582 Midhope passed to Alexander Drummond and his wife Marjorie Bruce.
In 1587 Alexander rebuilt the tower and turrets.
In 1664 The present doorway and lineal are the work of G.L.George Livingstone, third earl of Linlithgow, it was during is lifetime the castle took the shape we see today.

I love the country side pictures, old architecture. It really makes you go back into history, how they lived, what memories they had. A love story that has so many twists and turns. I'm still watching, probably more than half way through. I'll be sad when I get to the last episode.

The Earldom of Hopetoun took over the castle in the 17th century. It remains in the family’s hands today.

This has the best video drone footage I've ever seen for mid-hope Castle. Given the popularity of the show I would think if there was a crowdfunding campaign to restore it it wouldn't take that long it's a shame it's still in near ruin state regardless of outlander it's still Scottish history. Thank you for this wonderful beautiful share. I along with other people would love to see in those windows and see just how bad it is the only way you can do that is with a drone which they do frown upon probably for obvious reasons to unravel the magic of filmmaking! I agree, it would work if the owners would be willing. Post the restoration project on all the Fandom sites and community posts. Maybe even reach out to the celebrities of the show to use their social media platforms to promote the project....I bet they could help raise the money in no time. Clear the area and bring some attractions. Maybe even give little tutorials around the place like candle making, dying wool the old fashion way etc. A small history lesson/tours on how it was like to live back in those days. I dont know....there are alot of ideas out there. One of them will bring in the tourist.

I don't understand how historical places like this in Europe aren't taken care of. Such incredible history in it all. To see that back house, or whatever it is not even having an intact roof... Sad! But I realize it takes $$ and the land/property owners may just not have it. Kinda wish the production companies would see little things like a roof and help as compensation for using the sites.

It's not only the money. If it's a listed building you have to go through the local or regional historic committees. They demand it remains historically authentic. This can be a real hassle than restricts redevelopment of many priceless buildings. KZbin has a number of restoration videos that give some insight into the battle that goes on. I understand keeping it historic but the fear of someone confusing the renovation from the new is a bit deranged.

Just seems steps to prevent further decay, even if adding a non traditional roofing or something would still be better than letting it rot. Bureaucracy always had to have its hand in things. Beneficial at times, but always a hindrance.

There’s nothing inside it. It doesn’t even have floors, it’s just the stone outer shell. The restrictions and hence costs of restoration are so strict that it is way beyond financially viable to do any work on these buildings. This is the reason that so many old buildings are deteriorating, the councils make it so expensive to do any work to them.

A popular made-for-TV series (Outlander) with at least one spin-off (Men in Kilts), and the owners couldn’t swing a deal to fix the place up? Wake up people, this is a tourist attraction cash cow waiting to happen! It’s within the outskirts of Edinburgh for crying out loud. (Hint: Move the dumpy trailers out of immediate eyesight.) Maybe PBS can send guys from “This Old House” over to Scotland to prevent this structure from becoming completely derelict. Just saying!

It's within the grounds of Hopetoun House (also seen in Outlander as the home of the Duke of Sandringham) and it is a working estate with farmland, hence the trailers, equipment, etc.
