Outlander Filming Locations in Scotland: Part 1. This video features the top Outlander Filming Locations in Scotland. My wife and I are big fans of the show and decided to make the trek to Scotland to visit my wife's best friend that lives in Edinburgh. We also checked out our favorite Outlander Filming Locations.
We did a bit of research online before going to map out our trip. The order these locations appear in the video don't match the order in which we visited them. You need to map out your trip to best match your itinerary. We just spent about 5 days in Scotland during this visit which was plenty of time to see all of these sites.
We also just completed filming part II of this video, click here to watch: • The Ultimate Guide to ...
If you don't want to plan out your own Outlander Tour on your own, there are plenty of companies that provide guided tours. Here is a link to several of those tour companies that you can choose from: www.tkqlhce.com/click-1006966...

The video was quite entertaining though the pronunciation of some places was a little strange (eg: Doune pron Doon). Being a Scot and living in Scotland, I have never seen Outlander as I don't subscribe to a channel that shows it. I'm told it's popular everywhere but here!

@@Photasma I know. My American friends love it - as does the Scottish tourist industry! I suspect that it's all part of the same trend in which films made about figures from Scottish history (those of Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, Rob Roy etc - please don't mention Braveheart) do well in North America but completely bomb here in Scotland.

I spot my wee village 😊 I'm lucky and privileged enough to call Falkland my home, its where I lived all my life and where my wee shoppe is too. Outlander has been fab for the village and its lovely to hear stories from those who flock to the village to see where it was filmed.

That is so awesome! We loved Falkland. Unfortunately, we got there later in the day and most of the shops were closed when we got there and we left early in the morning, so they were closed then. Which shop do you have? We would have loved to check it out!

@@Photasma thank you, it truly does have such a magical feel to it like your stepping back in time. Aww yeah most shops don't open till 10 and close at 5 - I own the Rowan Tree, directly opposite the front gates to the entrance of the palace. The shop has been in my family for 30 years so it family owned and run. Pop in if you ever back in the village and say hi or if you need or want a wee bit of outlander merch 😉

Stephanie, I'm ashamed to admit that although having lived in Scotland for over 40 years, until now I'd never heard of your village. But after reading up a little, and at the risk of trying to teach my granny to suck eggs, I see that it has some degree of broader significance, at very least in its name. Apparently the British name for the disputed group of islands in the South Atlantic -- the Falkland Islands or _Malvinas_ -- is derived from the title of a senior British Navy official, the Viscount of Falkland of the late 17th century. And it turns out his title itself comes from your wee toon! 🙂 Fun fact (well, let's see, shall we): in the early 80s, during what Brits typically refer to as the "Falklands war" when Argentina attempted to secure their claim of sovereignty over the islands, a joke was going round In the high schools of Scotland -- well, in Glasgow anyway; maybe not round your way. The joke was one of countless others that poked fun at the Irish and so today would probably be seen as racist or at least politically incorrect, but we Scots and our beloved Irish cousins are (or maybe it's only were) very thick skinned about such things. The silly joke alludes to the fact that the British response to the Argentinian "invasion" of the islands was to send a group of warships known as a task force, and also to the peculiarly close-but-tense relationship between Britain (strictly, the UK) and the Republic of Ireland. It goes: Did you hear about the Irish task force, who tried to help the Brits deal with the Argies at the Falklands? *_Irish_*_ task force?_ Yeah. Unfortunately they invaded Falkirk! (Ho, Ho, Falkirk, Falklands, etc... 🤣) We all thought it hilarious, the idea of those daft Irish sailors invading, FALKIRK, an inland town not far from Glasgow. But I think the joke would have lost 95% of its comedic impact had we thick Glasgow teenagers known there actually was a Scottish town by the name of FALKLAND. I now imagine the joke going something like this: Did you hear about the Irish task force, who tried to help the Brits deal with the Argies at the Falklands? *_Irish_*_ task force?_ Yeah. Unfortunately they invaded Falkirk! _Eh?_ Falkirk. They invaded Falk... _Yeah, but it's the _*_Falkland_*_ islands._ No, I know. But...it's the Irish task force...and Falkirk...you know....like Falkland... _What are you on about? Falkland's in Fife ya eejit_ Yeah, naw, ah know. But...like, the Islands an' stuff. An the Irish are daft. An..._ _You're_ the wan that's daft, no' the Irish. That's a rubbish joke! An' look, there's the bell, an ah've goat two periods o' maths noo. Thanks _very_ much for wastin' the 'hale o' playtime wi' yer stupit joke. (Apologies for falling back into my natural Glasgwegian as the tension increases in the imagined exchange 🙂)

@@Photasma Yes, thank you. I keep reading all these comments about mispronunciation and I can’t roll my eyes hard enough. I live in New Mexico, USA and most of the names of our towns have Spanish pronunciations. If we got upset every time someone mispronounced a town or even a street name we wouldn’t live in “The Land of Enchantment” , we would live in the Land of Upset-ment. I really hope you don’t take it to heart on your mispronunciation and keep doing videos such as these. Some of us might never get a chance to go to Scotland and this is our way of seeing it.

Impressive reconnaissance. One tip, the reason you couldn’t find the room in the Hotel in Falkland where “Claire” combs her hair is that that “room” was a built set in the studio.
@Photasma
@Photasma 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, however, they did shoot a scene inside the hotel where she is brushing her hair looking into a mirror. She is being watched from outside the hotel by Frank and the ghost. I was hoping to recreate that with my wife, but couldn’t get that room.
@andreiaustin4895
@andreiaustin4895 3 жыл бұрын
Photasma The interior mirror shot was in a set in the sound stage in Cumbernauld. The exterior shot in Falkland that cut to this was a shadow cast onto the curtains of the hotel’s window to simulate “Claire” combing her hair.
@Photasma
@Photasma 3 жыл бұрын
If you get a chance, if you have Netflix or another service where you can watch episode one, go to 39:15 of the episode. You will see that you can clearly see Claire combing her hair in the mirror from the outside of the hotel, not just a shadow. I suppose it is possible that they could have set up a green screen or super-imposed that image from the soundstage, not sure. Not trying to get into an argument, but you did have me second guessing my memory of the scene.
@andreiaustin4895
@andreiaustin4895 3 жыл бұрын
Photasma You may be correct. I was the camera operator & I don’t remember her being there for the exterior shot looking up at the window. The interior WAS shot in the sound stage though.
@Photasma
@Photasma 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, Andrei! That is awesome that you were one of the camera operators! I definitely appreciate the feedback even more from an expert on the matter. I know you are right about the interior shots being shot on a soundstage. The entire upper level of that hotel was smaller than the room featured in the episode.

This was amazing. Thank you for doing this video. Tracing my family roots actually, and it helped. Graham; Hamilton; Hepburn, left out my Scot last name. We were told we came from Royalty in Scotland by my G-mother. As I am aging now, I am doing this for my daughter. Part of my family were traitors to Scotland, ended up in a Scottish prison, but some ended up in the Tower of London. Some escaped, some died, some were released from those prisons. Part fought for the reinstatement of the Scottish Catholic King. Eventually most of the family ended up in the West Indies, Jamaica & Barbados, then on to Philadelphia. Some moved to the Appalachian trail which is strange as I spent most of my life in Philadelphia and moved 10 years ago to the Appalachian trail. I did not know about the Scottish settlers before I moved here. Supposedly we were thrown out of England. Amazing what you don't want to learn but swallow hard and take it. Ancestors were from the Lowlands, mostly. Glasgow. Thank you for this.

You've made an amazing video! I wish I could visit these places! With Outlander, I've learned to love the Scottish accent, the culture, the music (I'm a musician!), the landscapes... everything is so beautiful! And I noticed that at 6:53 your son is wearing a shirt where is written "Rio de Janeiro". I'm from Rio! Have you ever visited Rio? You're gonna love Brasil; we brazillians, and specially we, "cariocas", are a very hospitable people. Hugs from Rio!
