Lalonde Fired, McLellan Hired

Buschy reacts to the news that the Detroit Red Wings fired Derek Lalonde and replaced him with Todd McLellan. What does this mean for the Red Wings going forward?

Super super stoked Todd got the job, very good coach and experienced one at that, also his buddy who is coming with, Trent Fawney, know the guy personally good dude and he will turn the defensive corps around and selvage their PK.. Exciting times here now, looking forward to the rest of the season

As a Blues fan, I had a feeling something was going to happen after watching the recent game. The Wings just looked uninspired. After the last couple of years, I thought they'd be in a position to compete for a wild card spot and disrupt some stuff. There's still time, so maybe they will.

I’m glad it actually happened. I said after the Blues shutout the other night that there’s no way this guy lasts til New Years. Clearly the players just wanted the game to be over with, and something needs to change, like right now lol. Now I expect us to have a major garage sale come trade deadline time.

Not surprised at this. Kane came out and complained about the system. No matter what you think, players rule the roost. Let's see what happens now. Do they play better? Or do they still suck? If they still suck, does Yzerman start trying to trade guys off for draft picks, or expiring contracts? Will he bring up guys like Lombardi or Danielson? Let's see how the next month plays out.

Kane needs to go as well, the juice is not worth the squeeze. They could have brought up a player from GR and it would have been better.

God Bless him and his family, but I'm relieved Lalonde is gone. And I'm happy with McLellan as a choice, although I thought Joel Quenneville might be the guy if this wound up happening this season... I'm Glad Stevie did what needed to be done & I think that McLellan will be a really good coach for what they need right now.

Gostisbehere wasn't dealt away, he left in free agency. Reports at the time was that the offers between Carolina and Detroit were similar, iirc the AAV was the same but Carolina offered 3 years and Detroit 2 years. Gostisbehere chose to go back to Carolina. At his age going to a place you know that is also a cup contender, with an extra year, seems logical for him.

The pulse and competitiveness was no longer there, and that pretty much always spells trouble for the H.C. Unmotivated players (I don't think that should even be a term given the $$$$ these guys make) results in underachieving players. For whatever reason Lalonde's message stopped being heard, and the kiss of death was inevitable.

The next coach should be European. The Wings won with the Russian Five and then with Swedish captains. Skating straight at the net, "trow da puck at da net" (say that like that bum Babcock) and dropping gloves is old school (Canadian) hockey and it is something to get away from. McClellan's record is underwhelming, 5 playoff game wins in the last 8 years..and that was with a Kings team with a core that had two recent Cup wins and with an Oilers team that an unnatural run of winning high lottery picks resulting in a McDavid led roster of stars. I guess Todd won't get a nickname like Uncle Fester cuz "he looks like a coach".

As I've written on other Red Wings Podcasts,, Another bad move by Yzerman..Wings are going nowhere this season and now instead of having a chance at a high 1st round pick, the coaching change will probably shake up the team to win a few like most coaching changes do and the Wings will still miss the playoffs but end up picking 9, 10 or even 15th instead of a chance at 1st or 2nd,3rd,,,,Now is not the time for such nonsense !! Bad signings, Teraseko, Gustaffson,, Holl,, Pietry,, and over paid /bad contracts,,Copp,,Compher,,even Chariot and Husso look pretty bad !! I thought Yzerman was suppose to be a great GM ?? Wow has he screwed things up,,but good,,,Yea I know he drafted a couple of really good POTENTIAL players and I hope a couple come through but that's a lot of POOR managing for a couple of good picks,,oh yea almost forgot that great trade that sent Wallman to the Sharks and we had to pay them a 2nd rounder as well !!!

You can NOT allow what is happening in that locker room to continue over the course of the rest of the season. You can literally ruin every young player in there. The signings I agree with. But like I said in the video, those contracts wont matter when these prospects mature into full time players

I remember when everyone was stoked for lalonde lol. Same players on the ice so who cares.. Yzerman needs to go so lets get real and stop holding this guys hand..The team is terrible and by now the yzer plan is a yzer fail. No one wants to be here bc he won't give out a decent contract . He can't pick up anyone on the block when he offers a 2 year deal. By the time he gets something going there will be so many contracts to negotiate that the team will be changing too often. The best he can pull is Kane and that's because no one will give him more than a year. All the washed up, on the decline players will be his best bet

Great! Now trade Kane, DeBrincat, Petry, Chariot, Holl, Tarasenko, Husso and Lyon for Shesterkin. Then strip Larkin of the C and give it to Raymond. Either send Larkin to Griffins or put him on the trading block. Once Lalonde lost the team, it was on Larkin to ralley everyone and he didnt. Shows his lack of leadership. Goodbye.
