Chunnat is done on the sleeves of the kurta with a hot round katori type press. Also, in Bengal kurta is called Panjabi. Excellent insight into the great personality of S D Burman. Hope all four parts of this interview can be accessed together. This will remain as part of historical heritage of Hindi music for all times to come. Kudos to Moti ji and Richa ji. Dakshina Mohan Tagore is an highly accomplished Taar Shehnai artist. Also, point to be noted, why all singers excelled under Dada's baton giving their ever best. For, Dada Burman understood his singers' voice range and capabilities to the core and moulded it to the hilt. Not for no reason why he himself remained the highest paid singer in Bengal non film song scene for 40+ years. Great series.

You are right about the heritage, that was my idea when I started these interviews before it become too late and our stalwarts who have first hand information are no more. No doubt, every singer under Dada bloomed in to a flower. The same advice he gave to Kishore Kumar to discover his voice instead of trying to copy Saigal ji. I am a hardcore fan of Burman's both Sachinda as well as Panchamda and hold them in high esteem. Thank you Mothiji for your hard work and dedication with which you have collected the information and unknown facts from all those who were associated with Sachinda in what so ever way whether it is driver or musical greats like music director, lyricist, singer, arranger, instrument player or producer, director. A number of those interviewed are no more leaving behind the rich legacy for our younger generations to know first hand what happened during our Golden Era of HFM. Actually it was music director Shantanu Moitra who suggested to us to upload our interviews on KZbin so that fans can view them anywhere in the world. There are already 5 books on SD Burman, at least three of which have picked up from our interviews. There's also a vibrant SD Burman group of nearly 8,000 members on Facebook, which shares a lot on SD Burman which could not be a part of these interviews. Superb Sir. I liked the part where Dada expressed his disinterest in listening to Subir Sen. I feel listening to all greats whom you have interviews that,really Dada was GEM of a person. Koti Koti Naman to him and HATS OFF to you Sir.

Dada was GEM of a person is true. All the greats of those days have praised him. atleast six music directors have gone on record that their songs were inspired by his songs. Keep on watching my interviews and you will find he was much more than GEM. Some of us call him Rishi. Waheeda in her interview has said that Dev Anand, Vijay Anand and she were shocked when Guide did not win award for music. But when she met Dada he was calm and said it didn't matter. His award was public appreciation. He said the same thing to his sitting members. Whomever I have met has been all praise for Dada. Thanks for letting me know what you felt.

I agree with you. But you have to consider from SD Burman's point of view, who himself was an excellent singer. Hemant Kumar's first hit song 'Yeh raat yeh chandni' was under SD Burman in Jaal (1952). Hemant Kumar has himself gone on record in an interview in Bangla on KZbin that in 11 years from 1951 to 1962, Burman Dada gave him 11 songs, and each one of them was a super-hit. Now, why would Burman Dada take a clone, when Hemant Kumar was available to him.

Moti Lalwani I'm not saying anything on SD's mannerisms. He was right on that. Just mentioned that Subir Sen was a fantastic singer. He has delivered a number of timeless classics in Bengali. I myself having some knowledge in music, learning it for quite a sometime, my only complaint against SD was that he hugely under used himself in Hindi as a singer. As a classical singer probably only Manna Dey could compete him in playbacks at that time.

Anirban Chakraborty Yes, Subir Sen had a good voice. As regards SDB, those who heard him sing while training the singer, thought he should be the singer. Suraiya suggested this to Dev Anand and Abrar Alvi suggested to Guru Dutt. Amitabh Bachchan too has gone on record several times that the singer, accompanied by orchestra, could only do 15 to 20% justice as compared when Burman Dada sang without orchestra during Abhiman days.

I'd love to hear some of those training pieces from SD if anyone has those. In my opinion those would be golden for those who wants to learn music. Do you have any such recording or can you find out? If you can please post those. Priceless it'd be.

I too wish I had his raw recordings. Amitabh Bachchan has said in one of his blogs that he recorded SDB while singing during Abhmaan days for posteriority. I met him just for 15 minutes. There was no time to ask him other than what we met for. But, we should try.
