First time in Samui 1983, Chaweng beach, cheap bungalow on the beach, (50 baths) fried rice (10 baths) ganja everywhere, no hassles, lot of palm trees, clear water, that was the paradise. I'm not nostalgic, but that was the good old time. NOW, a lot of change, like every nice places in the world. ✌️👍🙏

Every night everyone staying at the Bungalows would all get together to watch the latest pirate versions of Hollywood movies. To make phone call, you had to go to the post office and wait in line. There was one bank on the island to get money. The slow ferry from Koh Samui too 8 hours. There were no conveniences, it was hard to get there and hard to exist there but it was WAY better than it is now.

Great video. Hard to believe how much this place has changed. I recognise where the Aussie bar is now at the middle road junction. And the resort at the start looks a lot like mira mare.

the first time i arrived on samui was in 1988. people told me :" hey, you're 10 years too late..." things do change - and you never get your own youth back - remember your parents saying - "when we were young"....? maybe they are not so wrong...? maybe you're going to tell that to your own kids one day... who can't dance says the band can't play...

Funny seeing this. I first visited Thailand in 1993 and avoided Samui as I was told it was too overdeveloped!! Went to Koh Phangan instead. I eventually visited Samui (Mae Nam) in 1997. In MN right now and the beach is lovely. Lamai is depressingly overbuilt compared to 90s. And the traffic now is dire.

Schoene Erinnerungen.

This was when I began.....it was soooo much more real in the far east then, mass tourism had not quite begun, the destinations were not full of coffee shops. The travellers you met were a fairly hardy bunch and the leftovers from the 70's were still out there. I still go most years when I can, but today my only lament is that I told too many people " we kill that which we love".

Interesting. It looks more like Ko Samet, here.I first went to Samui in 2002. For all the appearance of huge difference,on the signs in this video you can see the foundations of today's Samui, already. Currency Exchange,Motorbike & Car Rental,Bars,Italian Restaraunt,Gym,Beauty Salon,Laundry,Resort Development Plots.Add tarmac roads to 3:17 in this video, and it begins to look familiar. Going by this video, it is tree cover which has been the biggest victim of development on Samui. Many cut down.

I was back here middle of last year (2012). Looking at this video again, starting at 1:39 on the right at 1:48 , that estabilshment (or at least, building) is still there after all these years. Maybe owned by someone else, but still there. I agree that pretty much anything of Lamai once you move away from the beach, is uglier and more crowded with each passing year, but the beach strip is still absolutely blissfull even now. Once I'm on the beach, it is like being there again on my first visit.
