It was called ugly by the crowd of it's time and now because it was radically different from the elegant curves of the 206/246. Little do people knew that later the wedge look will become a staple for some more years.

Growing up my Father bought a 75 GT4 in 76, it was such a fantastic car to drive, I got to drive it when 17 and it felt amazing, he was an ex fighter pilot and a brilliant driver who pushed it to its limits, Kevin O Rooke bought it and made it immaculate, but don’t big it up too much or the price will go up and won’t be able to afford one!! 😂👍👍

One story is: Bertone took this design to their regular customer Lamborghini and, as Lamborghini turned it into the Urraco, they changed it too much for Bertone’s taste, so Bertone then pitched it to Ferrari who felt that it was time to replace the 246 and implemented it as is. Both the Urraco and 308GT4 are lovely designs.

I was a kid in the 70s, growing up in up state NY so seeing a exotic in person was a rarity, however my best friends father had a Espada so already a car nut I got my first supercar ride when I was 15 & I never forgot it. I love , love, love the Espada!!!! And the GT4 Dino is a beauty as well, no matter what the detractors say. Thank you for the great episode. BTW I think the Espada is a bit like the Testarossa, they are cars far more impressive in person, pictures just don't do them justice.

Espada series 2 just like the one we bought in Rome in 1982. Ours also was originally green but then resprayed bright red! If you think they turn heads now driving one in 1982 in NYC was crazy stopping traffic or school buses of kids who wanted to sit in it and when you raised the huge hood and showed them the engine their jaws would drop!

When only electric cars can be bought new, and the only way to get something to enjoy is to get a used car, this Espada will be unattainable....

Buy your classic now then. As soon as possible. Personally im really excited for the electric revolution just to say we are officially in the future assuming that having flat-screen and tvs pretty much everywhere. Classic gas powered cars won't likely ever go away. Even a 100 yrs from now someone will have in their possession a gas powered car from waaay back in the day and who knows if they can drive it on public roads, im sure there will be ways to enjoy your things

Although to be fair, in 100 yrs l, virtual reality and computer tech will be so ridiculously good that you could peob drive any car yoy wanted with full fidelity with sights smells noises and feelings accurate. So there will be no reason for actual experiences in the far future. When an "actual" experience can be had in digital form. Pretty interesting to ponder.
@blueridgegarage
@blueridgegarage 3 жыл бұрын
@@justins21482 I'm more concerned with buying fuel in the future. All these "green plans" are to limit oil extraction and processing. With electric revolution we will not need petrol based products. I know Porsche is trying to create a safe 0 or near 0 emissions fuel for all the cars- they are into preserving the history. Hopefully they team with Mobil and we can still drive our ICE classic in the future. I'm not opposing the electrification, but I'm 100% against speeding up the process, since that would imply artificially increasing gasoline prices to force everyone to buy new electric cars. That along with stricter emissions, to where we cannot register the classics- California is one state where by 2030 the emissions are supposed to be that strict that no cars older than late 2000's could stay registered. Hope not, but my hope isn't part of that "green new deal". Then I have my personal confusion in which classics do I want to own... and how many do I want to own.... Dillemas....

@@justins21482 interesting or scary? Or both? We can be owned by computers... because that's a fear ever since Terminator movies era... and Elon Musk is skeptical about how much power do we give technology. It's all helpful now, but this can easily turn around and bite us

This guy sums up classic cars and ownership perfectly. Buy what you like, use it, experience it and most of all enjoy it. I just cannot see the point in buying a car and just looking at it, the car suffers from lack of use and the owner is terrified of it devaluing.. There are loads of truly affordable classics, it doesn’t have to be a Ferrari or Lambo. Go for it! The Espada for me, so much character and that engine!!

@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 Жыл бұрын
None of the gt4s were dry sump, just European and UK carb GTBs. Also, all gt4s for a given market weighed the same throughout their production, but US cars were heavier due to the massive federalised extended bumper mounts. There is no difference in performance between wet and dry sumped engines. Despite the wet sump the 308 gt4 is great on track and many are still raced in classic series. The sump is heavily baffled and designed not to suffer from oil starvation in cornering or acceleration.

There are definitely shadows of the Lancia Stratos in the Ferrari 308 GT/4. I’m old enough to remember when the Lamborghini lineup was the Miura, Jarama, Espada, and Uracco. The Countach redefined Lamborghini similar to how the 911 defined Porsche. It’s fine but also pigeonholes them into sort of a typecast they can never break out of.

I will never forget coming out of school & while walking past Peter Jones (big store) a lot of schoolgirls were crowding round an espada and screaming with excitement because they saw Rod Stewart jumping out, locking it & going into the store.... I waited, like the masses for him to come out & he understandably kicked off because someone scratched 'I love you Rod' on the side 🤪 yes, the crowd of school kids disappeared fast and he angrily roared off. Since Lamborghini came out with their 350 GT in 1963 I've loved Bertone designed cars and had the pleasure of owning one back in 1968. The only Bertone designed Ferrari was the 308 GT4 but I understand it was originally designed by Bertone as a baby Lamborghini Urraco (which was not approved by Lamborghini) and the design was subsequently sold to Ferrari as their baby Dino 308 GT4. Lovely car! but so was the Bertone designed Urraco that would eventually be excepted by Lamborghini. I would love to own ether one of them, or both? You can see the similarities between the 1968 Bertone designed Espada and the 1967 Lamborghini Marsal, Which i believe Prince Rainier turned up in at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. what a absolutely Gorgeous car!
