Did you ever find the source of the problem? Nice explanation on installation.

Well we never actually saw the damaged wire but after talking to the homeowner they said the previous owner had the sidewalk replaced and the existing wire that ran under the sidewalk we could not pull out and we did find evidence of old light duty EMT conduit that was broken on each end of the sidewalk and since the wire would not pull through it I'm pretty confident it was damaged when the new sidewalk was installed.

In the UK, you have to use screw-terminal connectors, but now most electricians use WAGO's, you are not allowed to use twist-on wire nuts in the UK. Twist-on connectors have a bad history in the UK. The UK traditionally did rely on screw-terminal connectors, but now is moving over to using WAGO's. In the UK, you have to use armored cable, for any outdoor work like this.

That's good, but how did you fill in the dirt under sidewalk.

When you pound a conduit through there's really not much fill to do under the sidewalk except close to the edge

How much did you guys charge for this job? I got a customer with a dead lamp post, same job pretty much.

I don't recall what we charged on that particular job but I would say a good average is between $800.00 and $1600.00, pending on the length and difficulty of the trench. This one was a relatively short and an easy dig so it was probably closer to the low side of the scale.
