I can't buy another fountain pen because the Lamy 2000 makes me question every need for another one :( It's just too good of a pen for me, I can't justify any other pen. The best ink for me and my Lamy 2000 F is Graf von Faber Castell Carbon Black, it performes exceptionally well 😍 The only reason for other pens is to have more ink colours to play with, but in a serious context there is no competition any more. At least for me.

this pen ended my fountain pen collecting as well. I agree it's the best for all the reasons everyone has already stated a thousand times over. And Doodlebud's video is a fantastic resource as is his entire channel.

Thank you Craig! I love this pen. I got mine with an EF nib. I needed a sketching pen, so I was looking for a smooth round shape with no obstacles as I hold it relatively far from the nib. I had tried many pens but got two - Lamy 2000 and an original Parker 51 made in the 1940s. I love them both! I believe that they are the best pens money can buy. :)

It's not the greatest of all time but it is one of the best I have had the pleasure of owning! It's something that I have enjoyed using for 5 years and something I will use for decades more!

@@CraigRoccanova I have tried much more expensive pens, but mine two are the most pleasant to sketch - most ergonomic, always wet and have almost no sweet spot: if I draw a complex curve, Lamy 2000 can be twisted almost 90 degrees and pulled sideways with no line breaking. Parker 51 (medium nib) is not so extreme but the nib has been polished through the years - it is soft and with the right inks produces beautifully shaped and shading lines. The nibs of both pens are made of 14ct gold - though I am not sure if that is the reason for such quality. Nowadays the technology is able to produce steel as soft as gold. And regarding the most expensive pens: buying Namiki Emperor, you are paying only 1% for the mechanism. The rest is the cost of the years of Japanese handmade lacquer craftsmanship. Lamy 2000 has been developed by a leading Braun designer: it is a frills-free masterpiece - mechanically and aesthetically.

Great review, and I agree the Lamy 2000 is a great writer and really the only fountain pen one needs. I have a medium like yours and that nib is outstanding.

Taste and motivation are interesting things. I’ve been collecting FPs for over 20 years and have over 80 pens. Only about 10 of them I’d consider worse than the Lamy 2000. And even though I also have over 10 pens I consider breathtakingly perfect, no pen has ever made me feel like I should stop looking for different experiences regarding writing with a fountain pen. I wish I were more like you. ☺️

Aww! Well the Lamy 2000 made me just stop what I was doing and made me move on to a different hobby/obsession (which ended up being Magic and Playing Cards). My love of sending handwritten letters and postcards to family and friends is what drew me back in! I went from one pen to.. by the end of this week.. it will be 10! It's good to take a break from something and re-evaluate yourself! I am happy to be back at it!

Haven't sold off my other pens when I got my Lamy 2000. In fact I got another one, steel, and had the nib ground to a cursive italic. I agree, the 2000 is as close to the perfect fountain pen as I have ever experienced.

I agree. The 2000 is the best pen for the money. When I got mine (in fine), its sweet spot was so narrow, that I nicknamed it “The Skipper”! I watched a few KZbin videos on nib adjustment and fixed it. It is perfect now. I didn’t stop my journey with the 2000, as while I like the “under the radar” look of the 2000, I wanted something else shiny with gold (or shiny silver) trim to have in dressed up situations. And I simply love using these little “works of art”, and I wanted more of them! I have Pilots, Sailors, Montblancs, Pelikans, etc etc., but there are very very few that meet all the criteria to ride in my pocket everyday, like the 2000. I love the giant grail pens like the 845, 149, 1,000 & the KOP, but who can fit any of those huge pens in their shirt pocket? Who wants to carry one of those monstrosities around clipped to their shirt placket? Then there are others that are small but heavy. Again, I won’t carry them. Same with the smaller pocket pens that don’t measure up. I keep coming back to my 2000. It really is hard to beat for price, size, weight, capacity, reliability, nib quality, writability, and overall quality. And it does fly under the radar! Great video!

Two words. I agree! More words. My puppy chewed end of my Lamy 2000. It’s still completely usable so I felt guilty replacing it with another Lamy, so I started searching for other fountain pens to have a non-chewed fountain pen for my birthday. And when I was said and done, I just simply wanted a Lamy that wasn’t chewed up so I went for a new law me but got a medium that this time. I have the extra fine already, and since they are interchangeable, if I decide, I like the extra find the best, I can just switch them. But I just can’t imagine spending so much money on something. I’m sure I’m going to like less than what I already have. sidenote, I like my TWSBI pens pretty well also. I have a diamond 580 ALR. I like how it writes but it’s just not as nice an experience and it’s not weighted as beautifully.

Just a little suggestion to Lamy 2000 users who find a bit of difficulty with the nib’s “sweet spot.” The Oblique Medium (OM), Oblique Broad (OB), and Oblique Double Broad (OBB) all write beautifully and do not seem nearly as critical as the traditional nibs regarding the “sweet spot.”

I have 2 regular L2Ks (1 vintage (fine) from the 1980s with black plastic around breather hole. The new one is a broad) and a Stainless Steel broad. I find them extremely user unfriendly. My 3 complaints are the sweet spot is too small, the section is too slick which causes pen to rotate away from the sweet spot; and the Stainless is way too heavy for long writing sessions.

Question? Can you fill the pen by removing the section nib and using a syringe instead of using the piston??

Well in 2017, it kinda was my Greatest of All Time! Now I know, there are better things out there! But this one does check a lot of boxes! I also know it's the only gold nib fountain pen that I would be comfortable carrying out and about. It can take abuse and it's very unassuming!

No, it isn't the best fountain pen ever. It's one of the worst pens I've ever used in my sixty years of experience. It's a good pen only to those who learned to write with a ballpoint, and who have no clue how to even use a fountain pen, and don't want to learn. Never mind the fact that it's an ugly pen with cheap materials and a horrible grip, the nib is stiff, and has a tiny sweet spot, which is stupid on a gold nib pen. The simple fact is that a good steel nib is infinitely better than the gold nib on a 2000. People who know how to use a fountain pen properly want soft gold nibs with a wide sweet spot. The 2000 thousand is simply an ugly, poorly designed pen with a nib designed to tell the user how the pen must be used, and one who knows fountain pens would call it a great pen. I've owned more than three hundred gold nib pens in my sixty years of writing that I used enough to know them well. The Lamy 2000 is in the bottom two percent of those pens. It's a pen for those who learned to write with a ballpoint, and refuse to adapt to the way fountain pens should be used, to a way that makes the fountain pen the best writing instrument ever invented. You're driving down the Autobahn in a Ford Pinto that burns more oil than gas, and thinking you have the best car on the road because you can't even tell what those cars are that pass you so fast all you see is a blur, and couldn't drive one of them if given the chance. The 2000 is simply a horrible pen that's ugly, poorly designed, and that has a nib no one but a ballpoint user could like. I'm glad you found a pen you love, but even thinking is might be the best fountain pen ever is silly beyond belief. A TWSBI Eco is better pen, and has a better nib, than the 2000. The 2000 really is just a ballpoint that has a gold rollerball in it. Best fountain pen ever? Yeah, and the BIC Stic is the second best pen ever. Both true, if you've never used a good pen, and wouldn't know how, even if someone gave you one.

I agree! It’s not the best pen ever but at the time when I got it, that was my grail and I felt that nothing else compared. Fast forward to now where I have many other pens that scratch itches that I didn’t have back when I first got this. It’s utilitarian and the Bauhaus fan in me loves it. My favorite writer is my Montblanc Meisterstück 146. I just got a 149 and that is simply amazing. I find myself grabbing the Lamy less and less but I still think it’s a fine, durable, and easy to maintain instrument. I appreciate your opinion and your comment James!

It would be the best fountain pen ever if it were available with a properly fine or extra fine nib. I’ve had two of these pens, both with “extra fine” nibs, and both wrote like wet mediums

Yeah, that’s what’s keeping me from buying one. The pen is cool, but a lot of reviews say the same thing about the EF nib
