This is a pen that has actually had to grow on me over time, despite its general popularity. I initially didn't like the design when I first saw it, but now I appreciate it and understand its qualities. I'm glad you discussed the ability to disassemble and clean the pen, because it doesn't appear to be able to be disassembled. Though that is really a testament to its design and engineering. Thanks for sharing this.

Great video, Blake. I own a Lamy 2000 with an EF nib. I true enjoy this pen; it is one of my favorites. There is a love/hate relationship with the Lamy 2K. Some love it for the buttery smoothness of the nib while others dislike it. Some dislike this pen because of the “sweet spot” (which happens with some hooded nibs) while others found the perfect writing position and have no issues with the sweet spot. As always, I enjoy your content.

Nice video, I especially like your last minute commentary of the pen in the end. And I agree, it's just a very good instrument for the money. What I love the most about mine, since I'm not actually crazy about the design, just neutral, even if the understatement of it is growing on me, is how it just seem to love to work. Out of all of my pens the 2000 just keeps wet, have no hard starts and writes perfectly even when running low on ink, until it's bone dry. Most of my other pens are more hesitant when very low on ink. Then there is the very satisfying click of the cap as well as the smooth posting. I love mine and it was a solid choice for my first gold nib pen.

You are welcome! The Lamy 2000 is always a top recommendation of mine when people ask for a first gold nib fountain pen. I use mine all the time. It's an icon for good reason.

Thanks for an interesting review. I am not sure that this pen's nib suffers from as much of QC issue as some people like to suggest. Lamy's QC is excellent. I've owned most of the nib sizes on the 2000, in various versions, makrolon, metal, Bauhaus, 2021 brown pen etc, and all of the nibs have been prefect. I think that the issue may be that it is actually a difficult pen to use, especially if you are relatively new to using a fountain pen, as you need to get the nib alignment just right. A lot of people always say that this should be people's first gold nib pen but I think it is a tough pen for a newbie user to get to grips with - although it will get easier the more you use it and focus on aligning the nib. You mentioned the broad and BB being almost stub nibs: this is a throwback to how pens used to be made in Germany and Lamy has just carried on the traditional way of doing things (the same is true with Montblanc's B, BB and BBB nibs). Lamy deserve credit here for producing this pen with 7 nib options (which puts them in the same league as Montblanc) and way ahead of many of their peers like Pelikan. All in all, a great pen that you could use for years.

Thanks for the comment! I've had a scratchy nib or two from Lamy but never a bad gold nib from them. I think the Lamy 2000 is a fine pen for new users as long as they are aware that there is somewhat of a sweet spot to the nib.

Consummate design, flawless ergonomics, perfect balance (posted or not); my initial concern prior to purchase was two-fold: I have enormous hands, & I am a lefty. Those so-called 'constraints' were wholly unfounded; my 2000 wrote straight out of the box - no 'sweet spot' or grip issues. I would consider that most of the complaints in regard to this scribe are more to do with preferential handling of same when placing nib to paper - pen rotation whilst writing is a good example; the key (as I perceive it) is to make minor adaptations - if you have to. I think that were you to canvass a good cross section of fountain pen users, there would be no, one particular grip for a range of pens that they may own. What this boils down to is the good ol' chesnut ~ subjectivity. True, from an aesthetic point of view, it's not going to be to everyone's taste - & in that regard, should not necessarily be bought on the premise of Lamy's world-reknowned design concepts (tho' doubtless, the company may argue that point). Nicely conveyed overview - thank you !

Yeah, nothing iconic is going to appeal as strongly to all tastes. I’m one who would never buy this because of its looks, but I see why others would. I’d be far more inclined to buy one for its great reputation as a delightful writer and its durability due to good engineering. Everyone claims others hate it for its sweet spot or whatever, but I’ve yet to find those supposed others. I suspect that’s a rumor more than a fact.

I have the stainless steel edition with the M nib and it writes great 😊 however it has two downsides. First, there is no ink window, so no way to know when you are about to run out of ink. Second, it's a heavy pen, so posted it becomes too heavy for long writing sessions, especially since I hold near the nib. Unposted it's perfect, so does not bother me much. BTW great review 👍😊

I had to chuckle when this came up. . . not because there's anything wrong with it, but the Lamy 2000 is notoriously the most-reviewed fountain pen in the world. I was not aware of the multi-pen. I know some pencil fans consider the Lamy 2000 mechanical pencil to be a classic in its own right, though.

Just a little suggestion to Lamy 2000 users who find a bit of difficulty with the nib’s “sweet spot.” The Oblique Medium (OM), Oblique Broad (OB), and Oblique Double Broad (OBB) all write beautifully and do not seem nearly as critical as the traditional nibs regarding the “sweet spot.”
@BlakesBroadcast
@BlakesBroadcast 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Roy. That is surprising that the oblique nibs would be more forgiving than the standard nibs. I've been wanting an OBB 2000.
@roygutfinski879
@roygutfinski879 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlakesBroadcast Well, what I believe is with the Lamy 2000 Oblique nibs angled at about 30 degrees off the attack sngle of the straight nibs they offer a slightly greater writing surface than the corresponding straight nibs. Also, I think it is easier for the writer to acquire a proper writing angle with an Oblique given the "hood" of the Lamy 2000.
@cb7560
@cb7560 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlakesBroadcast I have an OB 2000. It is a smooth, forgiving pen, but needs to be held slightly more upright to write best. The nib is a bit like the older Montblanc obliques on the 1x, 2x pens from the 1960s (if that helps).

For the longest time I did not want this pen because it’s so plain and I like bold and flashy and fun. This pen is none of those but it is one of the most reliable pens in my collection and always writes as it should. I got used to the sweet spot it has after a while and it’s just a beautiful writer. While it hits none of my sweet spots for beauty and flash it is a very reliable writer.

If one wants to be completely utilitarian with only one fountain pen, the Lamy 2000 is it. For roughly $1000 you get a 14k gold nib, piston, reliable, durable, smooth pen, with all the other replacement nibs. I personally like the steel one better. Whist the makralon looks really nice, over time it seems to develop shiny patches. I opted for the steel, and it looks like a profile of a great white shark, so I call it 'Jaws'. Oh I have a OM on it, and will be purchasing the OB, OBB and most likely the BB in the future over the years, decades, centuries etc :)
@BlakesBroadcast

I've had a steel 2000 on my list for a while I will get one eventually. The makralon can also crack too. I have the multipen 2000 and I unfortunately got a crack in it.
@ironmic9244
@ironmic9244 Жыл бұрын
@@BlakesBroadcast Really, it can crack? I guess so depending on how it is layered. The steel version I feel looks better. It just glistens, and I like the one color look on this pen. The shiny clip contrasts nicely with the brushed steel body. I also prefer the heft of the pen. It really allows the nib to weigh down the paper, yet still smooth to write with. I don't mind that there is no ink window. I usually have multiple pens inked up anyways, especially with unique blues that are still professional looking, so that is not a problem for me.
@BlakesBroadcast
@BlakesBroadcast Жыл бұрын
I am sure I mistreated it. It was a work pen getting shoved in and out of a bag. I don't hear about them cracking much in normal use so I definitely wouldn't have that put you off of buying a marklon one. While it is a nice to have, the ink window on the 2000 is so tiny anyway it is barely useful.
@ironmic9244
@ironmic9244 Жыл бұрын
@@BlakesBroadcast You're right, it is not like you hear about cracking issues with the makralon. Regardless, I was never much for the makralon, or the 2000 despite all the great things I heard, until I saw the steel version. So in so much if it means anything, I give the steel version a ringing endorsement. I don't need more than more pen of the same model anyways. The only pen I have multiple models of is the OMAS 360.

I don't know who put out the myth that the Lamy 2000 is made of fiberglass. Maybe it was Goulet. But it's wrong. It's made of Makrolon which is just a brand name for a type of polycarbonate (plastic).

People seem to really love this design and think it's the best Lamy. To me the shape and the colors aren't very interesting and too "modern". I prefer the Dialog 3, more innovative, fascinating design and some real thought behind the features while still seeming timeless. The 2000 makes me think of phimosis.

@BlakesBroadcast 2 жыл бұрын
I never was in love with the way it looked which is why it took me a while to finally get one but I definitely enjoy the pen now that I have it. I like the way the materials meet together and have the same brushed finish. I think that is interesting. The nibs write differently than the other models. There are other Lamys that I prefer but I do think the 2000 is the most special pen in their lineup.

Don’t Germans ever write small?!! After many years of prioritizing wet, ink-enhancing nibs, I’ve been flirting with fines and extra fines recently in an attempt to write less…lavishly. Unfortunately, both of my Lamy 2000's (one Makrolon, one SS) with extra fine nibs write like medium-broads, even with drier Pelikan 4001 inks. Maybe if LAMY made EEF or UEF nibs, I’d be a happy L2K camper once again.
@BlakesBroadcast

Hi Jack, thanks for the comment! I am sorry that the Lamy 2000 nibs have been off by so much for you. That is definitely annoying. I would have gone for an extra fine if I could do it again. I think this issue is Lamy's because I have plenty of other German EF and F nibs that write quite small.

I always alternate between liking and disliking the 2000. I don't own any or have ever tried one, I just feel very ambiguous about the design, on one hand I appreciate its iconic design, on the other, I don't find the design particularly appealing. Furthermore, I tend to prefer more "traditional" looking fountain pens.
@BlakesBroadcast
@BlakesBroadcast 3 жыл бұрын
I also am a bit ambiguous about the design. I love how modular it is and it works very nicely but in truth the design doesn't do much for me. I think the simpler Lamy CP1 looks better. All that said, the Lamy 2000 is a very good value.

Any writing you do that huge is not going to be reliable. If you write fast smaller and closer to your actual writing you will find that most pens can keep up just fine. In the end it doesn’t matter as most people who use fountain pens do not write that fast as a general practice. I don’t understand reverse writing? What is the purpose of writing with a fountain pen backwards? You wouldn’t try to eat with a fork upside down. Weird.
@BlakesBroadcast
@BlakesBroadcast 2 жыл бұрын
The benefit of reverse writing is that you can often get a finer line. Better finished nibs tend to be good at reverse writing. I also agree that writing big and fast like that isn't something you would normally do with a pen. I just like to push the nib to the limit.
@sistergoldenhair0727

@@BlakesBroadcast you are right! The platinum 3776 with coarse nib is like having two pens in one! A nice broad nib on one side and a crisp fine line on the other side and it doesn’t run out of ink either.
