In my opinion these are the 2 greatest pens. I have a 70 year old 51 and it writes better than any contemporary pen I own. A true workhorse. The 2000 is timeless. I love the simple clean lines and the tight design tolerances. Love them both, but if I had to go with only 1 pen for the rest of my life, it would be the 51.

Great to see this again. Recent convert to the Lamy 2000, but for me it’s the Parker 51 every time. You’ve made a brilliant video and a great case for each pen. The Parker has a kind of charm. No 2 pens are the same and full of character when writing with them. It is possible to pick up a decent Parker 51 in good working order but perhaps with some superficial scars for a low price. I’m doing a short piece about the Parker 51 for my local writing circle, which has enhanced my appreciation of the pen. Like the Lamy 2000 perhaps it is a brilliantly conceived and executed fountain pen. A great design icon of the last century. Thank you Doodle Bud

According to Wikipedia, the name was selected because the design was finalized in 1939, the company’s 51st year. (The actual release coincided with US entry into World War II, and it remained scarce until the late 1940s.)

Thanks for the video. I have a Lamy 2000, and I am a lefty, and I have not found a lot of trouble with the sweet spot. I am able to write with it just fine. I have also had to take it apart to service (the plunger end came off the piston after not having been used for a few months), but thanks to SBRE Brown I was able to service it very easily. As for the Parker 51, I have a couple Jinhao 51A's, and would love to get the Parker 51 as well.

I’m a lefty, and I didn’t really experience the supposed “sweet spot” at all with my fine nib Lamy. It actually suited my writing style very naturally. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying a 51, yet.

There IS a cartridge/converter option with the 51. It's rare but it exists. I'm not counting the cash grab monstrosity with the jotter nib that they call the 51 now. Aerometric sacs from the 50s are still going strong now as they are pvc rather than latex.

Glad this came up on my feed again. I feel like one of the downfalls of the Lamy 2000 vs the Parker 51 is that it's only a semi-hooded nib. What I mean to say is that the nib dries up too quickly depending on the ink because the L2K has some of the nib slit too exposed; whereas the Parker 51 doesn't have the same problem. I noticed this even when both pens are capped.
@bobmajor22042 жыл бұрын
I have owned a Parker 51 since the 1950's and used it at school and University and I am still using it. It has never had any problems but I clean it every few months. The nib has worn at an angle as one would expect. At present it is filled with Schaeffer red ink. My other fountain pens are three Lamy Safari with broad nibs using Lamy ink(blue or black) either from bottles(at home) or cartridge when travelling. I hope that the Safaris last as well as has the Parker 51. Thank you for the informative video and comments from other people. Bob Major Adelaide South Australia.

I'm a leftie and own a Parker 51 and the Lamy 2000M (the Steel one). I had no trouble hitting the sweet spot on the 51. However I hated the 2000 in Medium. I had to contact Lamy to do a warranty swap for an oblique nib. It's not on Lamy's US/CAN site as it seems to be an European exclusive, but they will swap you for one. Lamy's Leftie nibs are basically oblique medium as they both cant to the left on paper. I own a Lamy Lx in LH and a Lamy Studio in OB and enjoy writing with them. That might help your friend if they are still interested in the 2000. Great video and I am now a new subscriber! Gonna start with the nib tuning and grinding ones. I have an extra fine Parker 21 that refuses to work with me and tears paper because I am left handed!

Thanks for sharing your experience, might help others as well. Good to hear your got the right nib for your L2K so now its to your liking. Hope your nib adjusting turns out well. One thing to keep in mind is to try to do as little tweaking as possible. The VAST majority of nibs that I need to adjust/tune, need only small adjustments. Can usually be done in 1-2min or less. I love the way you do your videos. Really different to the rest of pen tubers. I had started just six months ago with fountain pens. I have both y do really enjoy both very much. I know this video is three years old but I'm a lefty and I've been having some trouble with my brand new L2K's "Sweet spot." I've found it a few times but I can't seem to keep it consistently at the proper angle to find it again. I'm hoping to be able to go to a pen show at some point in the near future and get it looked at by a nibmeister to see how it might be able to be adjusted to fit my writing style. It's my "grail pen" and I want it to be absolutely perfect

Thanks in advance for any/all advice. I enjoy your KZbin channel very much! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge and experiences woith fountain pens. Not sure if yu will actually get this. Hope so.

For the P51 restore best thing is to find someone local who does it. You can ask perhaps on fountain groups for recommendations in your local area. As for the L2K clip, it sounds faulty. I would let the retailer know & follow their return (RMA) process. The clip should hold properly & securely
@McAmeron089III2 жыл бұрын
@@Doodlebud Thanks for your reply. I think I've found just the right person to help the old Parker 51; or at least to advise me further. It's such a cool pen and in very clean condition(I got SUCH A DEAL on it and a very nice old Sheaffers that has the inlaid nib; both in their original boxes),it deserves to be given a makeover. I know the retailer,Goulet, would help me with the L2K but it would mean exchanging the pen. That may be what I will end up doing; but,my pen has such a nice nib...something I will have to consider. The clip is nearly useless. Thanks again!

I own and use both. For me the P51 is a better pen overall. The great thing about the LAMY is that its a piston filler. From a robustness and reliability point of view nothing can touch a P51 aerometric. Its almost indestructible. I also have some trouble with the "sweet spot" on the LAMY, which is just me.

Hey, Db, long time - no write. I have both of these pens, & as a lefty, I can categortically state that I have no issues with using the 2000 & it's 'sweet spot' - but in consideration, I am an underwriter (as opposed to perpendicular or 'hook' writing position - that may well be the factor with your friend. If you do rotate your scribe(s) somewhat whilst putting pen to paper, that too shall (also) present issues; if you purchase one with flat ground nibs ~ EF, F, M, B, then these may cause irritation, but with the Oblique options ~ OM, OB, OBB, they shall offer advantages in terms of that sweet area, but sure, there's always going to be something that doesn't necessarily agree with an individual's own writing style/position.... I do love that blue on your '51 - compliments the lustraloy cap perfectly. Great comparison - thank you !!

Thanks for the input buddy. Yeah, there are so many ways people hold pens and endless writing styles. It can be tricky for some with certain pens. I've never had an issue with writing with any pen/nib, but I know thats not the case for everyone. Good to hear from you 👍

68' Camaro...cool. My 3rd car (after two cheap VW bugs) was an Orange and Black 69 Camaro RS SS 427 4 speed. Man, that thing got me into a lot of trouble. Oh how we change - now, in my late 60's I am keenly interested in the differences between a Parker 51 and a Parker 61. (oh, btw, after the Camaro, I also had a HEMI GTX. However, at this stage in my life I am getting wet over the acquisition of an Orange 1928 Parker Duofold)

Beyond the lovely roar, classic cars have their little quirks and problems. Much like an fountain pen. But we look past them in appreciation of the styling, the feel the use gets, the customization, and all the different options that are out there. Still not as cool as slamming gears in my 68' with an M21 4-speed, but better than a bic thats for sure 😂

I have a feeling your leftie friend would have no problem with a new pen and you had simply worn in your as a right handed pen. Btw i think the piston filler actually are more resilient. Almost all old piston fillers work after a soak but sack pens almost never work if they are not the "modern" areomatic or a copy thereof with modern sac materials. The only part on piston fillers that wear out is the piston head but it is much easier to acces than the sac on sac fillers. Even my pelican 100 from 1937-1944 or so worked directly when i found it! And that is the first piston filler pen there was (even if mine is at least 8 years older than the very first ones). I had to fix the piston head but a little bit of plumbers teflon tape on the piston did the job! I mean my areomatic 51 works perfectly too but it would not be as easy to fix if the sac gives up one day...
