Lana Del Rey - Terrence Loves You (Lyrics)
You are what you are
I don't matter to anyone
But Hollywood legends
Will never grow old
And all of what's hidden
Well, it will never grow cold
But I lost myself when I lost you
But I still got jazz when I've got those blues
And I lost myself when I lost you
And I still get trashed, darling, when I hear your tunes
But you are who you are
I won't change you for anything
For when you are crazy
I'll let you be bad
I'll never dare change thee
To what you are not
But I lost myself when I lost you
But I still got jazz when I've got those blues
I lost myself and I lost you too
And I still get trashed, baby, when I hear your tunes
I put the radio on, hold you tight in my mind
Isn’t strange that you’re not here with me
I’m putting all the lights on and the television
Trying to transmit, can you hear me?
Ground control to Major Tom
Can you hear me all night long?
Ground control to Major Tom
Well, I lost myself when I lost you
But I still got jazz when I've got the blues
I lost myself and I lost you too
And I still get trashed, honey, when I hear your tunes
Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Mmmm
Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Mmmm

Some insight into the title and theme: David Bowie, a huge influence on Lana, had a brother named Terrence who suffered from schizophrenia. He was permanently institutionalized at a young age, and although he went on to live many years, he could not be the brother that David needed, so he very much lost him while he was still alive. Lana's former fiancee Barry also suffers from schizophrenia. I believe this song is about him. She once described him as 'her twin' which makes sense in regard to the line "I lost myself when I lost you". The Bowie comparison, besides the name 'Terrence' is further confirmed by the 'Space Oddity' reference ("Ground control to Major Tom"). Schizophrenia causes disassociation, or not feeling inside of yourself or your life. Someone experiencing deep disassociation may refer to themselves in the 2nd or 3rd person, for example by saying 'Terrence loves you' when you are in fact speaking to Terrence. The layers of meaning in the title alone are mind-boggling and just go to show how much of a deep soul and brilliant mind Lana truly possesses. Rest in Peace to David Bowie. Thank you Lana for this masterpiece. Thanks for reading.

@salvamea261 3 жыл бұрын
Also, in 'Space Oddity' Bowie sings from the perspective of Major Tom, where he says "Tell my wife I love her very much". Considering Lana represented Terrence as Major Tom, we can conclude that "Terrence loves you" is basically Major Tom telling his wife he loves her very much, where the wife is actually David Bowie. "Tell David I (Terry) love him very much". 😊

what makes me so obsessed with Lana Del Rey is that most of her songs feels like she's singing to you, and only you, and how much hurt she's carried...you feel it all because you've also felt it all before. she's a genius. she's managed to play my heart's strings in all her albums because its just that relatable. it's human emotions played beautifully in all her albums. if Aliens came to the earth and had a difficult time understanding human emotions after explaining and explaining, i would just toss them Ultraviolence. you feel it all and it makes wonderful magical sense. i don't understand how people do not want to open up to that kind of realization. but hey, better late than never. i was =)

@LightMeUp95
@LightMeUp95 8 жыл бұрын
The reason I love Lana is because, before this album and Ultraviolence, I would never listen to anything that sounds like this. Not that I don't like jazzy, mellow songs, I just loved her sound on Born To Die and Paradise so much that I never thought of her sounding any different. Then when Ultraviolence dropped, I was literally captivated by its sound and everything about it. She made me love music that I never thought I could love. Then Honeymoon came with this bluesy, jazzy vibe going on, and she's totally thrown me into it. I always thought Born To Die could never be topped and I'd be one of that fans that said 'this sound sucks, she should release BTD 2.0' but I honestly don't think I could ever go back to hearing her sing alternative trappy pop music. This is the sound she was always meant to have and I feel like I've evolved with her, she's that intimate. I just can't even describe the feelings I get when I listen to Ultraviolence and Honeymoon. They're just so creatively unique

did someone ever noticed the glitched high-pitched noise in the background of some parts of this song? sounds like she's transmiting this to space, like the person in subject is out there in the universe and she wants to reach him by sending a low quality recording of herself in a rocket, hoping somehow he's able to listen to what she wants to say to him

You are what you are I don't matter to anyone But hollywood legends will never grow old And all of what's hidden Well, it will never grow cold But I lost myself when I lost you But I still got jazz when I've got those blues And I lost myself when I lost you And I still get trashed, darling, when I hear your tunes But you are who you are I won't change you for anything For when you are crazy I'll let you be bad I'll never dare change thee to what you are not But I lost myself when I lost you But I still got jazz when I've got those blues I lost myself and I lost you too And I still get trashed, baby, when I hear your tunes I put the radio on, hold you tight in my mind Isn't strange that you're not here with me But I'm putting all the lights on in the television Trying to transmit, can you hear me? Ground control to Major Tom Can you hear me all night long? Ground control to Major Tom Well I lost myself when I lost you But I still got jazz when I've got the blues I lost myself and I lost you too And I still get trashed, honey, when I hear your tunes Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm Mmmm Mmmm-mmm-mmm-mmm Mmmm You're welcome

I come back to remind y'all that this her magnum opus. It is an ode to the strange bliss of knowing you've been loved, even briefly, and the sadness that follows knowing you won't ever be the same. It leaves us wondering: will this make us step closer into love or farther away from it the next time?
