violets are blue (her favorite color) and roses are the symbol of love. so “you made me trade my violets for roses” means “you made me trade myself/my happiness for your love” she’s such a genius writer.

Not sure I understand these lines: And by the murder alleys In the streets have ceased And still the shadows haunt the avenue The silence is deafening Anyone got a guess?
@AdityaSingh-rv7wx3 жыл бұрын
@@robotubetwob maybe she compares love life with a street which was earlier famous for gangs of looters/hired hitman (basically a type of street famous criminal activities..every city has one ) but now maybe due to some circumstances it has been evacuated for public safety ...even now it's safe but people still feel shadows of those thiefs/criminals (mentally,and it's true)...so she compares her uncertain maybe toxic love life as street and previous lovers and their memories as shadows which still haunt her .....lana earlier told many times that she keeps a piece of remembrance from each partner and she has indicated many times about toxic relationship with her partners ....it's there in blackest day , cherry , white mustang , Brooklyn baby etc there are many songs and even poems she wrote for violet. So maybe that's what she is saying ...no matter how much you try to move forward in your life ...the memory of those whom you loved dearly and the relationship turned out to be something else ...haunts the person and always questions the self consciousness and present life...just like those infamous streets.

"...with their masks off and it makes me happy" I really love this part as I hope that everyone could truly take their masks off. Not the literal masks that we wear but the invisible masks that we wear to look happy on the outside. I hope for the day to come where I could finally take my mask off and smile for real. I will wait for that day where I could finally relate with this song, to let go, be free, and be finally happy.

"Violet for Roses" Lana Del Rey (From 'Blue Banisters') [Verse 1] There's something in the air The girls are runnin' 'round in summer dresses With their masks off and it makes me so happy Larchmont Village smells like lilies of the valley And the bookstore doors are opening And it's finally happening [Pre-Chorus] Ever since I fell out of love with you, I fell back in love with me And, boy, does it feel sweet Like a summer breeze Ever since I fell out of love with you, I fell back in love with the city Like the Paramount sign sparkling Sparkling just for me [Chorus] You made me trade my violets for roses You tried to trade in my new truck for Rollses Don't forget all of these things that you love are the same things I hate A simple life, I chose this You made me trade my violets for roses You tried to take all the pink off my toes, and God knows the only mistake that a man can make Is tryna make a woman change and trade her violets for roses [Post-Chorus] Ah-la-ha, ah-ha Trade her violets for roses Ah-la-ha, ah-ha [Verse 2] There's something in the air I hope it doesn't change, that it's for real The beginning of something big happening And by the mayor, the rallies In the streets have ceased And still, the shadows haunt the avenue The silence is deafening [Pre-Chorus] Ever since I fell out of love with you, I fell back in love with the streets And, God, does it feel sweet Like a summer breeze Ever since I fell out of love with you, I breakdance to the backbeat And, God, does it sound sweet Like it's playing just for me [Chorus] You made me trade my violets for roses You tried to trade in my new truck for Rollses Don't forget all of these things that you love are the same things I hate A simple life, I chose this You made me trade my violets for roses You tried to take all the pink off my toes, and God knows the only mistake that a man can make Is tryin' to make a woman change and trade her violets for roses [Post-Chorus] Ah-la-ha, ah-ha Trade her violets for roses Ah-la-ha, ah-ha Trade her violets for roses (Ah-la-ha, ah-ha) [Outro] There's something in the air The girls are runnin' 'round in summer dresses With their masks off and it makes me so happy

Violets grow wild and are considered a weed. They are often mowed down despite their innocent, wild beauty. Where as roses are a symbol of status. They are prim and tamed usually. Lana is wild and her partner was materialistic and inauthentic. She can be herself again without his pretentious restrictions.
@dimanakardzhieva1283 жыл бұрын
Finally this is an explanation I can agree with. Yes, I thought that, too. And also "violets" sounds like "violence" which reminds me of Ultraviolence and also of the wild, untamed existence described in Ride. Meanwhile, roses are a symbol of traditionalist love - tame, like your said, and orderly, and proper, while Lana has always loved guttural, almost painfully honest and heartbreaking, almost violent love / life.
