We know that the more is not always the merrier, however it came out beautifully and one can’t really tell it has 150 colours in it. That’s how harmonious it is. I was so eager to try the holbeins from my sketchbox and now this video is feeding into the art supply collector in me.

Thanks so much. The pencils are a lot of fun! They are a little pricey, but if you have some other pencils a great way to get started with these is to get the pastels and work them in to your collection. Those pencils are seriously unlike any colors I have ever had in a set..: they aren’t particularly light fast but they are really fun to work with!!! amzn.to/4caZk43

I have never seen them marketed as an "oil" based pencil but I got mine from Japan almost 5 yrs ago. They are a blend of oil, wax and fat. Very unique and my favorite pencil. Like you said Luminance will crumble too and so do Prisma so this does not bug me at all. The key with Holbein is knowing how to use them properly on the lay down, the application of the stroke is more particular than other pencils but you get used to it after a while. They are different and I like that difference, SO saturated and beautiful. They work beautifully on top of a Poly Chromos underlayer (which also works well with Meltz).
@LanaGloschatArt6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I picked up the "oil" classifcation when I was doing a bit of research on meltz... honestly polychromos is the gold standard for an oil based pencil for me and they aren't all that similar. Great insights!

@@LanaGloschatArt I have the same set as you do but I’m guilty of not giving them the use they deserve. They seem so precious and I was really silly nostalgic when I opened them and smelled that Japan smell from my childhood when my dad was stationed there. But, from playing with them, I remember being exited about how smooth and quick they were to lay down, as if Prismacolor and Polychromos had a love child. Overall, I adore them and they are my favorite to look at and smell! 🤣🤣🤣

Having the entire set of Holbeins and a decent selection of Lumis, they both have a similar amount of dust imo. I think Prismas get dusty sometimes too, but not in the way Lumis anf Holbeins do. impressive watercolor painting with oil based pencils ;-) meticulous and disciplined work. after spreading the blender did you notice if you could apply light over dark in an effective way (opaque) ? BTW, sometimes the ugly skin phase is the best as far as dramatic texture.
@LanaGloschatArt9 ай бұрын
Ha ha..: that’s what it felt like when I added meltz! Thanks! These pencils worked light over dark great with blender and with OMS. That’s actually one of the ways they shine. Did you see how this worked in the hair with the light wispy hairs over dark?

@@LanaGloschatArt 10Q for the reply. i did hear you comment on light over dark and did notice the pink over the red but i was not sure whether the liquid bulldozer had paved the way first due to the timelapse. i use polychromos and have to use white oi pastel as a base on top in order to modify the color underneath. keep up the magnificent work :-)

Although these pencil feel like professional colored pencil. If you want lightfast colors, you ether should choose other options or have to check the lightfastness of individual colors.
@LanaGloschatArt9 ай бұрын
Yes that is an issue. I planned to talk about this more. They are so fun to work with, I think that reframing what they are for is important. So if you are using the pastel shades which are not highlighted lightfast, they are for prints, play, and sketchbook… not for art you want to hang around forever. That being said… not everything needs to last forever to be important. I’ve loosened up my opinions about lightfastness over the years
@parleymanderson75279 ай бұрын
@@LanaGloschatArt Completely agree! Not every art piece will be hang around forever. It’s just a heads-up for up coming artists who want to keep their arts for a long time or want to give it to someone.
