I was hoping to snag at least 3 lanard xenomorph warriors on Xmas eve(the day smyths actually got them in stock after multiple delays) but my Mrs had already ordered the neca nes 8 bit nes dog alien without me knowing 🤦♂️🤷♂️ I've started getting into the gi joe classified line having just got movie snake eyes and storm shadow. These Joe's do scale well next to Joe's and now I'll start my own dutch's crew seeing as neca can't be arsed giving us more human characters from the predator saga. Gi joe Outback Gung ho Breaker baroness with coil bike are all on the list for this year but excited to see what lanard has up its sleeve for 2022

In all fairness remember that in the late 70s/early 80s grocery stores only had "grocery store" toys, so if you wanted the big toys mom had to go out of her way somewhere else. That's where companies like Lanard made their money by being in those grocery stores for "impulse-buys" by parents who figures it's close enough to those GI Joes and Barbies their kids wanted.

Lanard also went all-in on the 1980s/90s "My Little Pony" craze. Lots of comb-the-hair candy-color pony items with symbols all over 'em, with regular ponies, seahorses, unicorns, flying ponies, and baby ponies. The only thing I don't think they copied were the pony big and little brothers, the males. I could be wrong though...I just don't recall seeing those. (Not a MLP collector, I just pay attention to toy trends and icons.) Lanard seems to have strong relationships with The Dollar Store and Walmart chains, and has been doing exclusives for them and probably Big Lots and so on, for quite a while. Considering that Lanard started business when the higher-end toy sales monoliths Child World, Toys R Us, and Sears stores were everywhere and holding consumer attention, Lanard apparently aimed to find their special bargain store niche and held it, going for the discount store and cheap drugstore/convenience store/supermarket toy trade. Meantime, Kenner, Remco, Ideal, Deluxe Reading/Topper, etc., went out of business, one after another, some even during the big boom years for toys. So I'm just sayin' L had a plan, and it worked, like it or not. There were toys. I guess it's totally arguable that they cannibalized sales for the bigger companies that went away, but some parents didn't have as much money as others and were glad enough to buy the cheaper stuff to give their kids a good Christmas. It might even have "saved Christmas" for some. I mean, you're on the road as a trucker or a construction worker or something and maybe you can only grab the time to go into some truckstop and buy your kids some colorful stuff. Or you're a single parent working graveyard shift. You have to shop odd hours. It all counts when kids are really little, and you have to go shop on payday, no credit cards for you, or doing toy layaway you have to keep paying on. (Remember those days? Mom did that stuff. If she had time away from babies or wasn't at a job herself.) You had to keep the same hours as the store, no "extended to midnight" or shopping on Sundays that I recall, from years and years ago
@bradm82053 жыл бұрын
My nine year old kiddo wanted some plastic army men for Christmas this year. Not a tall order by any means but all the ones I looked at were super cheap. Timee and BMC apparently make good ones from what I can tell but the prices for a play set or bucket was $35 - $50! I found a bucket of 120 pieces from The Corps for $14 on eBay. These were from 2018 but still sealed. By far the best quality and detail. Instead of a WW2 or Vietnam looking troop these were more modern/futuristic. Very similar to the design of G.U.T.S. from back in the day. They were so good we ended up buying another bucket for his younger brother too!

If the major toy companies were not trying to rip off the consumer to begin with maybe there would be no need for parents to have to opt for the cheaper brand knock off. These ripoff versions are so fascinating. You have to think that the primary reason they exist is to trick unwitting grandparents into buying them for their grandchildren. If Lanard put as much effort into producing their own toys as they have into mimicking other companies' toys, they might have a chance to compete as something legitimate. It seems almost more difficult to create legally distinct versions of licensed properties than it would be to make something new!

You're not wrong on your assessment that Lanard's entire MO is knock offs at a budget price, but you're off mark on a fair few. Jurassic Clash is fairly recent, likely made to capitalize upon Mattel's Jurassic World, not Kenner's Jurassic Park. Make some great modern DinoRiders though. That's the thing with Lanard, they're cheap, they're knockoffs, but they're not bad toys at all. Lots of charm, get the job done, decent quality. I genuinely enjoy collecting them when I can find them. Go great with Chap Mei Vehicles too.

I looked up Street Eaters after watching this. People are asking more for them than I expected! I don't think it was a rip-off of MASK (which I was a huge fan of) since the main gimmick of that line was civilian vehicles with combat alt modes that usually also took on a different terrain than civilian vehicle (cars become planes or submarines, motorcycle becomes a small helicopter, etc.). The gimick for Street Eaters seemed to be battle armor and battery powered lights and sounds. My guess is Street Eaters may have been one of their unofficial movie tie-in lines, specifically Mad Max as Beyond Thunderdome came out a year or two prior, but I believe the VHS release would have been not too long before these toys came out. It could also be more general as Mad Max inspired a lot of post apocalyptic scifi films in the 80s.

Junkman, first I want to say I absolutely love your shirt *Blake's 7 excellent. Now let's dive into this Lanard discussion as I want to counterpoint your views a bit especially since there's a few inaccuracies in your description. La-nard toys *for pronunciation has made for use with and cost saving alternative toylines for decades, we can agree on that. But on alien and predator these are NOT kenner molds the molds are all new, and the appearances/colors are a multimedia inspired approach *comic, videogame, and a tip of the hat to kenner. But they aren't copies at all. And on Star Troopers...the entire star Troopers line is a continuation of the 90s Lanard product S.T.A.R. Force line. The alien humanoid figure is a tip of the hat to sci fi genre alien sidekicks as a whole, hearing your side it would be like saying a star trek alien ripped off a star wars alien..... and I get it, if you're not familiar with the lanard lines and you only hear that tired old argument that "The Corps! are just k.o. joes" then you have a locked in perspective.... well I'm here to tell you Lanard lines have their own mythology and are branching away from that old stereotype. Lanard Toys are fun toys, for kids, collectors, & fans of All ages. There's something for everyone. F.Y.I. the Corps! are still going strong. Now the older 80s lines sure there were some in your face lower cost alternative lines, but that was a common practice in the 80s. The Jurassic Clash line is a part of The ongoing Time Crisis storyline, not a jurassic park rip off, again I get it, if you aren't familiar enough with the brand you could make your automatic conclusion. I invite you to stop by my channel or visit me on social media, I'll happily discuss the ongoing lanard product lines in depth with you or anyone. Kung Fu takeout was a continuation of Dragon Do, a youth friendly martial arts toyline, and the line was lastly incorporated into the corps super soldier line - also a younger aimed marketed toyline. Street Eaters was a low cost alternative to the stompers and rough rider lines of the time. Again I appreciate the subjective point of view, but I would love for you or any of your viewers to visit me on any of my social media or here on KZbin to discuss the lines. I really enjoy your channel and always appreciate your in depth at star wars.

Can’t forgive goofy and stupid rip offs but I quite enjoy their modern Predator figures. Jungle hunter being the best followed by the Berserker, and then City Hunter last (Less poseable ankles, incorrect armor color and quickly repurposed JH mask). The Aliens are alright but could use much more articulation in the legs and feet. I hope they can make some Terminator and Robocop figures in the future. I’m sure they’d be decent and nice as long as the sculpts and articulation is good.
