IMPORTANT TLDR: I have no bias towards this grinder or these burrs. I prefer the timemore sculptor 078 to these. I prefer ssp MP to these. I prefer ZP6 to these. I prefer the new Pietro Pro Brewing to these. I was simply wanting to help make an accessible burr set that was solid. Will they blow your mind? Probably not. Should you buy them? Maybe if you're using stock burrs and want a cheap upgrade. Anyway, this is the first and last time you'll hear me discuss these burrs so there won't be any issue going forward. Let's be real- I am not compensated so no incentive ha! Just happy to have contributed to something many seem to enjoy. Was excited to share that. Let me know your thoughts below! Did you notice a lot of fines? I’m at the coarest setting and I’m still getting so much fines. 40 grams in and about 2 grams of 250um and smaller.
@Andrew-wp1bz Жыл бұрын
Michael Chong, that really isn’t a lot of fines. A pretty normal amount. You’ll always get some fines. You probably could align your burrs to produce less fines though.

Thank you Lance! I think you helped everyone in Specialty coffee by raising the bar for the burrs that became the "Gen 2" burrs! ZP6 vs Pietro Pro Brewing for a travel grinder?
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
That's next to nothing. Plus sifting is not a helpful measurement but let's assume it is. I sifted for my US brewers cup routine which placed second in my testing. A 15g dose of coffee on an ek43 gave me 2.2g of fines.

Travel? Zp6. Easier to hold and lighter. Better particle distribution? Pietro with the burrs I helped create lol. I am heavily biased here because I make royalties on Pietro sales BUT to be honest, it is big and heavy (1.5kg). Zp6 is lighter for travel. I prefer brews from Pietro and so have the 4 people I have blind brewed for.

(That's a huge compliment, he's almost otherworldly in his range and depth about everything.) My old Breville grinder died today and I binged reviews and videos. I only needed something simple for my French press, my espresso setup is in good health, so ordered this grinder today. Doesn't seem perfect but hope it will suffice without spending a larger chunk of change. Your stamp of approval made it a go. Thanks again.

For my 2 cents (worth likely less than that), I think these are exactly what they should be. My daily driver is a Lagom P100 with the stock SSP HU 98s; it was my preference overall for the kind of coffee I like to prepare, as blind tested against a friend's Weber and another friends Kafatek. Finding an electric brew grinder in that mid 300s price range that I could feel really good about recommending to friends and family who are not nearly as obsessed with coffee (i.e. not even entertaining the idea of dropping anything north of $400 on a grinder) was a lot harder before this came out. I got one right after they came out as a present for my brother in law, and had a chance to do a triangle test against my P100 for shiggles. Yes of course the P100 won every time. It was not night and day. The burrs in this really do produce an objectively enjoyable cup of coffee, and I think that's a real achievement at the price point. TL;DR, nicely done.

Hey Lance, great video. Whatever it’s worth: I upgraded from the gen1 ode to gen2 and at first the anti static tech was great. It helped a ton, the grind was really fluffy and …not charged with static. But after about 6-8 months of daily use (and no cleaning just using the knocker), the grounds are pretty staticky and messy again. I tore it all down and cleaned it out, and it worked pretty well (like new) again for a few weeks but now it’s back to getting clogged up again. The wires that are energized get absolutely caked with grinds and I guess needs to be cleaned regularly. Now as I type it out it seems so obvious lol.

When I used my Gen 1, I would set the grind setting as low as 3 for the lighter roasts and still managing to get a 3 to 3.5 minute extraction in the Stag XF pour over set. I had to turn the grind setting all the way down to 1 if using the V60 in order to get a a great extraction. Now, with the Gen 2 with the upgraded SSP MP burrs I can get the same or similar extraction using the Stag XF but turned all the way up to the largest grind setting. This naturally opens up a huge array of possibilities for extractions with lighter roasts in the finer grind settings with the V60! I’ve been enjoying a ton of experimenting with different extractions, recipes and so on. The anti static feature is a game changer. This Gen 2 is very clean! Overall, I love the flexibility this new grinder is affording me!

Got the Gen 2 last week. It's actually my first electric grinder. Before now I hand ground everything with a 1zpresso K-Plus. Which is great. However, I do a lot of cold brew for my lady and I throughout the week. An batch brewing on a hand grinder sucks. But so far it's been great. It's interesting to task the difference between a conical burr and a flat burr grinder. It's more of a generic coffee tast I suppose. But it's still a great cup. Just... different in it's own way. I posted my first comment before I finished the video, but thank you so much for waiting and for the transparency with your involvement on the bur development. I bought this grinder right when it came out because of other reviews, and knowing that you helped develop the burs just makes it feel even more special. I've really enjoyed this grinder, it's my first grinder and it's the one that got me into specialty coffee and I've been having a great time discovering light roast with it. As for the price, I think too much is being made of it, honestly. I think $50 is more than fair for the upgrade, especially considering inflation in the USA has caused, on average, increased consumer prices by 16%. 16% on $299 is $348, so it's basically a free upgrade if you buy it now, compared with the 2020 price of the Ode gen1
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
that's fair! In my mind, it is a 20% increase. If you look at it like it, it seems quite a bit more for a scaling company that is probably thrice the size they were. The margin has to be nuts on these in comparison to gen 1. But I get it!
@0whitestone Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick well, I don't really know about how big the company was compared to now, I thought my grinder three months ago so the fellow I know now is the fellow I've always known lol. A question to anyone here with the knowledge. How much influence does a grinder have over the final results with coffee? I see many different recipes for doing pour overs with claims of wide variations and I have experienced some of the results in the cup. This is something anyone can confirm. I use a $100 OXO grinder and wonder what one could expect from an upgrade. From reading comments on all grinders, it sounds like I am beating my beans in an old dirty sock on the garage floor with a hammer. Would a grinder like the ODE Gen2 really change my results? I do batch and pour overs. Ease of use would be one thing since I have to pick up mine while it's running and tip it and slap it to get everything through. But will it taste better? Thanks

@@LanceHedrick My water is filtered RO. No taste. I use Petes Major Dicks, Starbucks and Costco mainly. I think a good cup of coffee can be had from these major retail brands. Not really into the $20 for 10oz. bags that come and go. So, my conclusion from this, is that the grinder here in this discussion (@ $350) or similar, would not be much of a return but going $500 and up would get substantial improved results. Thanks
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
So massive issues. Brewing with RO is awful. And those brands will give less than pptimal results. A $300 grinder, minerals added to your water, and high quality coffee would completely revolutionize your cup

@@LanceHedrick I see I have a lot of learning to do. I admit my coffee tastes like crap and that's why I'm here. Still better than at the Diner though. Ha. Water, I live in So Cal and the public water tastes horrible. And like chlorine. It's so full of calcium and other contaminates that everything it touches gets spots. Everything. Sink, dishes, glassware, car, etc. You must wipe everything or else. So, I got the bright idea to get an RO system for the kitchen. Water is pure with no taste whatsoever. Thought that would eliminate bad water taste in Coffee and let the beans come through pure. All my vessels that I use RO water in look like the day they were new. I have read articles that state not to use distilled or RO water but didn't know why. Tap water is out of the question, and now RO, so I need to go down a road unknown for a solution to my water. Drops in the RO water? Table salt? Coffee, I know my brands are kind of like Ford, Chevy, Dodge, but I have to draw a line somewhere at around $15 per lb. or close to that. Anything from the small shops is $30-40 per lb. that I know of. If anyone knows of a good Med to dark roast that can be ordered let me know. I have had some good results from my beans but I'm inconsistent and most of the time it's not optimal. Equipment, My Aeropress does well but my batch maker does not. My best coffee is absolutely from the Aeropress. I have a moccamaster with aluminum carafe. Actually 2 of them, the same model. One for 15 years and one for 5. I am convinced they really don't make good coffee, but since they cost so much, and everyone raves about them coming from Europe, everyone thinks they make the best coffee. At minimum they need to be stirred. I have a Hario Switch and glass pot ordered. That will be my new focus. Grinder, I am too new to the premium grinder scene to know yet what would be best for me. Top of the list is the ODE gen2 but was going to wait a little for the new Timemore line to come out. I recently bought a scale and that alone gave me finer control and improved results over eyeballing with a scoop. Now I can follow recipes precisely. So, thanks for the previous replies and help.

I am not sure when or if I will get SO approval for another upgraded grinder beyond the Ode Gen 2 in the future, so long term considerations are very important. It would probably be very difficult to get the Ode Gen 2 with Gen 2 Burrs and then convince my SO to let me spend another ~ $185 + tax on a burr upgrade at a later date. In the long run, I think I am probably safer with the SSP MP burr upgrade from the get go. So I expected you to choose the gen 2 easily over them because of the quality of cups they produce. Good to hear that the 1zpresso grinder perform so well against a more expensive electric flat burr grinder. Appreciate it that you take your time to reply to all these comments. Thanks Lance!

I’ve had my Gen 2 for 5 months and I’ve enjoyed the coffee from this grinder. My one complaint is that grinds get trapped above the bottom screen and seize the grinder. The knocker tap does not do an efficient job in expelling those grinds. So far it has occurred 2 times and I had to take apart the top portion of the grinder to unfree the beans after breaking apart the packed grinds from under the chute. The chute opening seems to be too small for the grind rate.

So my question to you is: is the gen2 producing better espresso quality than the encore ESP? and if so, is that with the stock burr or SSP MP Red Speed Brew Burrs? (espresso focus)

Has anyone tried these gen 2 burrs for espresso in a DF64 (or similar?). Whenever I’ve asked this, I always get the “Ode can’t grind for espresso!” answer… but I wonder if this burr could grind fine enough with the right motor.

@@Foolsauce good to know! I recently got SSP Cast Burrs, which based on some reviews and Joe at espresso outlet’s opinion I for whatever reason thought would be a great well rounded upgrade for my DF64P for espresso. I’m finding that I have very limited range and am struggling to get decent 1:2-2.5 shots for my milk drinks. I have had better luck with longer straight shots with very light roasts (and/or at lower pressures), but am still in a very limited grind range right above chirp. I was considering throwing my casts into my Ode V2, and getting something else for the DF64P (or just selling it and getting a Timemore 078s, depending on how those burrs review… I’m getting really sick of the static/clogging issues with my DF). I considered trying my Ode V2 burrs for espresso since I haven’t heard of anyone actually trying them 🤷🏻♂️

Loved the video, and the work Nick and the team at fellow have done with the Gen 2. It really is a nice object to have on my counter. I'm going to give it more time and experiment with another coffee or two, but the feeling I'm getting is that I must have got a lemon, because I have only got maybe one decent cup in the first week of ownership. I need some comparisons with other grinders, but so far I'm shocked that my Encore with default burs is producing better results in the cup. Everything I'm getting is muddy, choking the V60 easily, and I haven't found a position on the dial yet that's let me avoid significant unpleasant dryness. If it's possible to get a good cup with this particular unit, it's at the very least quite difficult, and for $500 CAD, I'm hoping for cups that don't make me want to rinse my mouth out afterward, even at weaker ratios and coarser grind settings. It's quite surprising, but I'm hoping to eventually get some decent results with it, because it is a really nice design, with a few minor problems like the somewhat irritating catch cup. It grinds so fast, it's quiet, it's clean, it feels nice to use.

@Toronto_Luddite Жыл бұрын
@@LanceHedrick I have since checked alignment, thanks to your video and others that demonstrate the market test and shimming. It was useful, and now I'm getting some of that acidity and flavour expression I'd expect out of some of my lighter roasted beans, but I'm still not realistically able to grind within the 4-5 range without the resulting brew just being dominated by body. I usually think 'There are some of those flavours I got when I tried the same coffee ground on a Sette at 600 microns, but only if it wasn't nearly as dense and syrupy". So in that sense, it's really hard to tell what's just a matter of my perception regarding these burrs when they're performing ideally. You and others who've reviewed it, along with their own description, emphasize body, but no so much so that I couldn't get an easy to drink cup, but I'm getting rather tough-to-like cups. A V60 for example is closer to Moka pot or maybe a french press in terms of oilyness or siltyness, almost like I'm going in for a bite rather than a sip. For a 4-6 cups a day, these results are just tricky to get down

Got SSP MP, but will probably swap to Gen 2 burrs, cause guess Im not good enough for SSP. Cant brew with it anything with body, like no-body there literally, very little aftertaste. Yea I can grind at finest, which basically looks like espresso grind, but can actually brew V60 with it. But it has no positive impact. Altho that sludge looks hilarious and it should have no right to even go thru it. Also got SSP HU, switched back and forth with this. HU are definitely making really really good espresso and really not so good filter, which is also rather difficult with HU, cause it somehow produces very unpredictable results. Plus again, its like.. no-body there if its "filter grind size" and all sorts of strange results, if its finer, mostly being a bit over extracted. Not sure if its SSP thing, but both burrs I have really go deep in that acidity/astringency territory. Now as last resort I just put back original V1 burrs, put them in reverse, cup was okay. Its bit "empty" which isnt case with SSP (either type), but its not astringent at all, at least. So I swapped it into correct position (jagged teeth edge as stator, normal burr as rotor). It somehow doesnt feel improved, rather opposite, so I might swap it back. Thats a bit strange thing I noticed with SSP MP burrs too, if I put them inside "incorrectly", which means rotating burr has less teeth than static burr, it actually seems to taste better than "correct" way. Kinda odd. Did that without purpose at first with SSP HU too, but there is I think some thickness difference, which seem to create issue with accumulating fine particles inside grinder, so dont do that (at least not with v1 Ode, v2 has better chute probably, might be fine), also it didnt seem to have any impact on taste at all. Sorry about rambling, bit late and ADHD again kicked in, shouldnt have that last cup..

loads of grinders better than comandante. outdated benchmark, imo. floating burr, interior adjustments, and a wide particle distribution (I have taken lots of tests on a mastersizer 3000 and it fails against lots of the 1zpresso lineup, for example). it's a fine handgrinder, but super overpriced for the build and results, imo.

My comment on the Hoffman video was that they are selling the v1 with SSP for $5 less right now, but that all the improvements, along with the new burrs, made the v2 a better value. I guess unless it's SSP or death. The new burrs really make me want to give the Ode a chance now that they have fixed the bigger issues. I always felt that I shouldn't have to spend $185 for burrs on a $295 grinder. If it's a $600 and up grinder, alright, that makes sense. But other people were simply fixated on the fact that it was the cheapest grinder that could take the SSP burrs, which is valid for them I guess. I am going to wait for the new Timemore because I already have an expensive enough grinder(or three).
@LanceHedrick Жыл бұрын
Gen 1 with ssp is less than Gen 2?! Tbh in taking Gen 1. And I helped develop these. But I don't think that is the right choice for the VAST majority. It is, however, for me.

@ciejaygear Жыл бұрын
Tons of fines are inevitable I'm afraid with these machines because they go at an insanely fast speed for some strange reason 1400 rpm !! I overlooked this before I bought my Gen 2 unfortunately, and realized it when it was too late to send it back. You can read my comments on it above. I can't help think it was planned into their marketing strategy because how simple is it to slow the motor down, like a lot? Buying one of their 'Shimmy' filters' works well but it's a whole extra step to the workflow process. I honestly don't have the motivation to use it every single time. Only days when I have extra time and I want to really taste the potential of the strains I'm working with. If you know anyone that wants to buy a fairly new Ode 2 and save some money, please let me know. Cheers

Where are you getting this information thay higher RPM with flats equates to more fines? It isn't accurate. It is for cones...
@bp060 Жыл бұрын
@@ciejaygear nah that's not it. As Lance already said fines on higher rpm is with conicals not flat burrs. Also I wouldn't reach that far into the cookie jar and claim it was intentional to sell a different product. The shimmy has a different target demographic. It's an easy way to improve a cheap grinder without investing into a more expensive one. Why would they Programm a smart rpm which adjusts the rpm when they would know it leads to a worse cup. Nah man, I know cooperations often only profit on mind but intentionally making a product worst would just harm them instead of selling more shimmys. Your reasoning doesn't make sense

I recently received my Gen 2 a week ago to replace my old reliable OXO Burr grinder as I wanted something that made single dosing easier as I had many varieties of coffee to choose from and while my JX Pro was easy to swap beans on it was limited by capacity. What I do enjoy about it is that is easy to dial in my coffee and it is so much more quiet than the OXO. My only dislike is the hump in the center of the cup; the guides are easy for me to ignore by using the other side of the cup. Lids on either the grinder or the cup really don't phase me. Could they be a bit tighter, sure, but in the end it is the grind I am concerned about Now as for that coffee at the end of your video, I have never hit a two on my pour over. I have a few light road decafs but they seem to not drain through the filter at that grind (v60)

I have more fines with the V2s compared to the Italmills in my other G-iota. So the coffee often gets a little bitter and has a slow flow through the filter (paper and also metal filters). Also my favorite Ethiopian naturals taste not as good as the brews with the Italmills, because the funky flavors hide under that slight bitterness. I really Hope the fines will decrease after some kilos of seasoning. So the Italmills perform pretty well as allrounders!
