Thank you Anton, so interesting! I met your brother David on the Santa Fe International Literary Festival last year, where he had a lecture. Hugs.

love the differentials between bear names. also just going into your complexities in your anishinaabe background is fantastic.

This was fascinating. I was surprised how long ago European surnames became intertwined with the Ojibwe. I assume in a small town like Bena both sides of your family must have been close?

@@anton.treuer my family is from Roseau river though. Lost many of the family history through residential school, 60s scoop. My great grandfather had the family name of accobee, my nookomis relative tells me that the names that run in the family were Accobee, french and Atkinson. I know originally we belonged to the pembina band of Chippewa indians as whole but through treaties and conflicts and the decline of the Buffalo push us up into Canada in manitoba. Its both a beautiful journey and quite the challenge to piece the family history together.

@@jacobdalling6938 the Atkinson and Nelson families at Roseau are still there. Herman Atkinson passed now as well as Stan and Charlie Nelson but their kids and grandkids still live at Roseau River
