You don't really need to memorize how many square feet are in an acre. 43,560 is a number that most have never used before. All you need to know is two numbers. How many feet are in a mile 5280 and that there are 640 acres in a section. Hopefully schools still require students to know how many feet are in a mile. First multiply 5280 by 5280 and you come up with 27,878,400. Then divide that by 640 and you come up with 43, 560. Knowing that I can verify that I correctly remember how many feet in an acre by simple math takes the pressure off of trying to remember that.

It really depends on the state in which you are in... The states that have or are using the metes and bounds system regulate the function individually....

11. How many acres are contained in the tract de- scribed as "beginning at the NW corner of the SW¼, then south along the west line to the SW corner of the section, then east along the south line of the section 2,640 feet, more or less, to the SE corner of the said SW¼, then in a straight line to the POB"? I guessed it right in my practice exam; 80. Now to actually understand it..

@@esthervanschaik4404 So a section of land has 640 acres. Anything past the section 3 part of the question is not important I think it is there to trick you. So what I did was I divided the section into 4 smaller squares because we need to find how many acres in a particular spot INSIDE section 3. Now it says NW 1/4 so that means we are looking at the top left square of section 3. Then it says the S 1/2 of that square so we are looking at the bottom half of the top left square. So we divide 640 acres by 4 because we split it into 4 smaller squares which gives us 160 acres in each sqaure. Then divide that by 2 because we are looking at the south HALF which gives us 80. I basically just wrote an essay lol, but I hope that makes sense. My exam is on Friday wish me luck!
