This was the version we all danced and clapped along to in England as well. I'd say it was the definitive version out of all the covers. Just seeing the grainy black and white images and the go-go dancers takes me back to my early teenage self, Billy, get your yo-yo!

I read somewhere that Paul McCartney was worried because Cannibal and the Headhunters were received well, meaning the audience went WILD over them! They had more "screams/excitement" than The Beatles! Cannibal had the dance moves, better looks and showmanship (my opinion), however!😉

These guys played a lot at our High School dances in Montebello, Ca..as well as the Midnighters! Those were the days! There was another young guy, playing the trumpet for some bands in the area. His name was Eddie Olmos (Miami Vice). Who would ever know!

Believe it or not, there were other great Groups just as good back then..The Group that I liked back then, were called "The Impalas"..I think they were from El Sereno, LA. Eddie Olmos was also in some groups back then..but he was dam good, so good he played at The Troubadour in Hollywood! Nobody knows what a great trumpet player he was, and opening act for the "Doors"..and also a Baseball player. He was from South Montebello

The story goes that Paul McCartney liked this version so well (including the "na na na na" at the beginning, that he asked the group to travel with them on tour in America and be the Beatles' "opening act".

That's a correct statement. McCartney really liked their style! As a matter of fact, Brian Epstein (Beatles manager) "told" Eddie David (I believe, Cannibal and the Headhunters manager) to have them "tone it down" due to them getting too much attention from the audience, as they were that good with their singing, especially their dancing. I guess Brian Epstein felt a bit "threatened" by them and wanted all the attention to go solely to the Beatles (as if they really needed it!!!)!!! Cannibal and the Headhunters were a fabulous and very much "underrated' group. I believe all members were/are of Mexican heritage.

I was in the 5th grade in East LA my best friend Ricky Cortinas had a brother who played bass for Cannibal & The Headhunters,they played live @ The Golden Gate Theater Ricky said "C'mon let's go" we got to see the show from behind the drummers seat looking out into the audience, it was great seeing all the screaming girls! They very soon after that opened up for The Beatles in New York, when they got back we heard all the cools things that happened to them when they met The Beatles, Winter Gardens Elementary!

Ed K. It was big in the west, too. Long before Wilson Picket came out with his cover...

Ernie Peru- Actually, Pickett's version only came out about a year after the Cannibal & the Headhunters version, and wound up charting much higher and becoming the more well known version of the two covers, a song originally written and released by Louisiana musician Chris Kenner about 4 years prior to the release of its first cover.

@Edward: It just sounds a little less polished and a lot wilder than Wilson's version. It sounds like a song that a bunch of kids should be singing.
@billr37247 жыл бұрын
I agree. This version has that garage band/street corner thing going for it, like "Louie, Louie", "Wooly Bully", and "Double Shot of My Baby's Love". Raw, uneven, but somehow it works better for me than the slick, polished Wilson Pickett version.
