Dan Hamilton was very handsome. Thank God his long hair covered the crappy sideburns that alot of 70’s men wore. I was in my teens when I heard HJF&R on the radio. Long before cable TV, MTV and VH1. And now thanx to you tube I can watch alot of my fave vids that I thought I’d never see again. Googling Dan Hamilton to see what he looked like today was how I learned that he had passed. If there’s a rock n’ roll heaven they REALLY have a hell of a band now with all the great artist we’ve lost. Michael Jackson. Freddy Mercury to name two of the biggest performers and all the rest. Hope to see one great big concert in heaven for eternity.

I can remember picking up an order at our local sub shop. There was a TV in the shop and Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds were on a show. I can remember the cashier and another gal customer were glued to it. She said "Wow, he is so fine" and I too took notice of the handsome Dan Hamilton and watched right along with them. Such a talented trio with Alan Dennison on piano. They were so underrated and Dan had such a beautiful voice. It broke my heart to hear he passed so young. I love this song and will be featuring more of their music on my radio show. Rest in peace Dan. You are not forgotten.

I love Jimmy’s original recording. But the production is muffled, which is a double-edged sword: it leans itself to the authenticity of it, but the values make it almost a difficult song to hear. Yet, I can’t turn it off - I’m captured by it!

Out on the plains, down near Santa Fe I met a cowboy riding the range one day And as he jogged along, I heard him singing A most peculiar cowboy song It was a ditty he learned in the city Ah, comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, yi, aay Get along, get hip, little doggies Get along, better be on your way Get along, get hip, little doggies And he trucked 'em on down the old fairway Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, ii, aay Singing his cowboy songs, he's just too much He's got a knocked out western accent With a Harlem touch, he was raised on loco weed He's what you call a swing half-breed Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, yi, aay, comma ti, yipply, ii, aay Get along, little doggie Better be on your way, your way G-get along, little doggie And he trucked 'em on down the old fairway Singing his cow, cow boogie in the strangest way Comma ti ii-yi aay, comma ti yipply ii aay Yip yip, singing his cowboy songs Yip yip as he was juggling along Yip yip, he sings with a Harlem touch Yip yip, that cat is just too much Singing his cow, cow boogie, in the strangest way Comma ti, ii, ii, ii, ii, aay

I sure do remember when this song followed up the #1 song “Fallin’ In Love” back in ‘75…I loved their follow up and never understood how it stalled on the American charts halfway up the Top 40. I think that it was just as strong of a hit as “Fallin’ In Love”.

The song writing team of Don Raye and Gene de Paul composed several songs, not just one. Do some research. Benny Carter was a alto saxophone player, a musician, who had a partial melody in mind, but only partial. He did not compose the lyrics or complete the melody. Without Don Raye and Gene de Paul, "Cow Cow Boogie" would never have existed.

Dan had a unique vibrato sound in his singing voice. It has an apealing quiver but not obnoxious like Cher or Dolly Parton.

I learned today that Dan Hamilton was a backup singer for Laura branigan when she was on tour in 1984. A tour video of brannigan is on KZbin and I think it's titled Laura branigan live 1984 and she introduces Danny Hamilton around the 38:00 mark
