The Carpetbagger I thought this place was closed down for good because of a massive fire that happened there. An employee there wasn't too happy and decided to cause a fire which started in the emerald city and then spread through half of it I think. The employee was fired and then the owner tried to fix it up but sadly couldn't afford it I think. I don't know if I have this right but two things I know for sure is there was an employee that wasn't happy and there was a huge fire.

Dorothy's house used to rock, making it difficult to keep your balance. With ropes attached to the house, there would be men standing outside on both sides of the house pulling the ropes back-and-forth. It was so much fun! I'm 53 now, but I'll never forget going there every year as a child!

Jacob, this was so amazing! I saw another video some time ago of another ride park based on Oz and that's what I thought this was. How utterly enchanting!! It's what I love about your channel....something so out of the ordinary that leaves me feeling wonderful. And BTW...."Return to Oz" is my all time favorite Oz movie....I love Jack Pumpkinhead. This movie is so much more true to the stories in the books. Thanks again for a wonderful time! I love it when you bring Anna along....God Bless!

I finally got to see it open, only seen it on abandoned videos before, what an amazing place. They have repainted the yellow brick road as it is lovely and bright now. The characters were perfect, especially the Tinman, the lion and the Witch. One of your best videos yet. Shame they demolished the Emerald City, they should rebuild it and open it back up into a theme park.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this!! My parents took me in the 70s when we lived in NC. The celler/cyclone sequence scared the hell out of me and I was wondering if it was just me remembering from a kid's point of view, but it is still scary!! You have no idea how much I love this place. Went there 3 times as a child, and the memory is still one of my most precious. I have been to Autumn in Oz a few times, but missed it last year thanks to the big storm, and this year thanks to work. I thank you very sweetly for this video, as I got to go through it this time with you. Perhaps next year I'll be able to make it back.

Thanks for the memories! Interesting trivia there are pictures online of a young pre Star Wars Carrie Fisher there with her mom Debbie Renolds who had some financial interest in the theme park. If Star Wars came out in 1977 it must have been just before she was cast in the role of Princess Lea.

friendly history lesson from a boy who grew up in boone nc during the Oz daysand know land of Oz like back of my hand.. it was one of the best theme parks I have ever been to and that says a lot seeing in its hayday land of Oz was huge in the 70's.. the reason it closed down and they moved all of the balloon rides and large rides to a piece of property close to tweetsie railroad until they could get it all fixed and get it back up to Oz and it was to reopen but it never did and what you see here is what I call ( sorry for the language) bastardized version of the real Oz. the Beech Mtn corporation owned the property and formed the name Emerald estates and built 3 dozen little cabins next to the Oz property. and emerald estates did not kick off like they thought it was so a few people said Hey great idea lets bring back Oz for one week every year and it just looks so sad how it is now

I've been watching your more current videos for a while, but just discovered you went to the Land of Oz. I went sometime in the early 2000s when they had just reopened it for Autumn at Oz. There were minimal characters and there was not as much "show" as there was for your visit and it felt more abandoned, but still very cool. The best part was the actor that played the Munchkin coroner was there meeting people in costume.

Read the original books with the illustrations from either Denslow or John Neill! Much better than the movies!. And there’s a series of books, continuation of the characters and meeting new ones. I was fortunate enough to grow up next to a small town library which had the first editions still sitting on its shelves, to which many of us little ones took out read and returned many times. Today, many of those books are worth thousands and they started to disappear off the shelves when it became known how rare and valuable they were. I treasured those books. It’s a pity they are gone and nobody can enjoy them anymore. They’ve only replaced a few books with paperbacks with modern illustratrations that are sub par. The illustrations of Denslow and Neill alone are worth a look. Both illustrators were from the golden age of illustration.
