Kiunga is tucked away in the hinterland of Papua New Guinea and located just around the Star Mountains bordering the International Land Boundary with Papua New Guinea and the Indonesia and separated only by the mighty Fly River. The topography is very rugged.
Sharing the International Land Boundary between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia and with that, there are families living on both sides of the land and Countries, thus do have access to cross to and from.
Kiunga township though not very big but of course is a resource rich town and areas and is the home of the current gold mining at Tabubil and the Star Mountains area. Access to the area is mostly by Air and sometimes by the river on the Fly River, but, it may be too expensive by dinghies, except by boats or Barges.
