Really really enjoyed!! 👍 two things: firstly on a RHD model the windscreen de-mister clears the passenger side first, which is really handy because they can shout if you’re going to crash into something. Secondly, all the doors leak at the top when it rains, but if you’re going at more than about 30mph if you roll down the window very slightly it creates air suction which sucks the rain back out of the gap in the window before it has chance to drip inside the car 😉 you’re welcome 😁

As a Defender 90 owner myself for many years this is the most fun watching video I have ever seen, all you said is true, one of the many funny thing that happened to me a few days after I bought my Defender was that while driving on a dirt road a small stone was caught in the tire tread and when it let loose it hit the steel wheel arch and the sound was like a bullet hitting the body of my Land Rover, after some time inspecting for any bullet holes I just realized what it was 4:54 And it is amazing that when I see other Land Rovers all drivers always wave or smile 10:40 Owing a Land Rover is a Blessing : )
@barryb831105 жыл бұрын
I love the reflection comment. Only a defender driver would understand. I couldn't count how many times I had a 'what's that' moment before I figured out it was me and not some alien death ray with a near miss.

Ive had my '84 90 since easter '21 and the thing that makes me love it is the wave. 99% of the time another defender waves or flashes or toots their horn at me and it always brings a smile to my face. I watched this video way back before I bought my Landy and despite all its "faults" it made me want one even more, just for the quirkiness

I love the design feature on mine where if I'm running a tad low on screen wash and there happens to be a small pool of water on the bonnet, if I slow down a wee bit that pool runs off the front and then blows straight back up on to the windscreen, instant screen wash, one quick swish with the wipers and you're good to go again.

Every single thing you said were either the interesting quirks I've experienced (and thought deeply) or solutions/answers to A LOT of problems/questions I've had for a long time, like the gearbox heat. A friend bought himself a 2015 D90, and it was a gorgeous vehicle. I’ve always loved Defenders but never owned one, so I was excited to finally get to ride in one. And a “new” one at that! Imagine my shock when I got in and he drove us around, and it was identical to being in my shoddy old 1987 Jeep CJ7 lol. Bouncy and cramped inside, lots of creaks and pings and it plodded along. I have a TDI300 and a Puma. Living in Namibia, Africa, my Landy's are active every day, not on road, but in the bush. I LOVE my Landy's. Positives, you can not slam the kids fingers in the doors, gaps are to big. Another is the perfect flat platforms (mudguards) to put your beer and elbows on while talking to your bud doing the same on the other side. Onother thing is the personalities. Man, Defender owners are always just the most relaxed people, no matter what the stress, there is always a smile ready to pop out. Man, and yes, the Landy wave makes my day every time, because Landy owners always greet Landy owners. Great video, Defender wave from Namibia to all you Landy Lovers.

My absolute favourite bit of secret genius Land Rover design is the incredible water shifting trick. It can take the smallest of puddles and somehow throw all the water forwards and totally drench the windscreen. I anticipate puddles by turning on the windscreen wipers, this baffles passengers until the visibility is suddenly reduced to zero in a deluge that looks like you've driven off a pier! I love it!

V funny - definitely recognise the trouser holes! On the wiper part, totally true - the fix? Silblades (or if you can find them anywhere else, just a silicone blade) wiper blades are fantastic - I bought some and feel extremely stupid for not removing them after the Defender was written off to transfer them to the new one - they're not cheap but they're well worth the extra.

Loved this video… I’ve not got a Defender, but a very close relative, called a Santana PS10.. Now the Spanish are clever guys, coz they fixed some of the Land Rover foibles. 1. They removed the seat box… the driver’s seat is moved right (on a LHD) so you have more room and also it can be moved back further. 2. The rear door has a hydraulic damper, so it stays open. 3. It has an Iveco van engine… so it goes like a van and is far superior to any fitted to an Land Rover.. Lot of white Iveco vans in France. 4. Better door hinges..don’t wobble. 5. Gages work and temp gage is normal…. 6. Clutch is same as series Land Rover, but on mine the original Land Rover gear box has been replaced by a ZF, fitted to BMW’s.. so is pretty smooth.. Transfer box is same as Defender though LT230. 7. Windscreen seems not to mist up too badly… 8. Same Land Rover shape.. all outside LR accessories fit… 9. It is about ten times cheaper, for what amount to virtually the same car, but missing the LR badge. But do I care??? But much has stayed the same… the Spaniards have limits in innovation it seems. 1. The door catch still rips you belt loops off.. 2. Wipers same so crap. 3. While fitting better door hinges , they still don’t close first time either… 4. Leaks in to footwell too…BUT the Spaniards have a cunning plan.. a rubber bung under the mat to let the water drain out.. Hey how good is that? 5. Door play will also pinch your finger if you leave it outside while driving… 6. Steering play is same as running gear is same.. so shocking.. 7. Handbrake same drum system.. yes it rocks but not failed me yet… 8. We have a few extra goodies too.. as it’s a leafer.. it squeeks.. 9. You didn’t mention leaks other than water.. well that gets in, but what should stay in gets out.. transfer box, diffs, sump you name it, it leaves it’s calling card on the pavement. Cheers Gareth

Ha, the bushes.... connecting pretty much everything under the vehicle together - axle to chassis, control rods, trailing arms etc. These ones came off the 'hockey sticks' (front control arms) and they were all pretty much shot as the previous owner had been around a lot! Even to Mongolia... The ones you need to keep an eye on are the Panhard rod though... Here's a link to that one (with Rob our Land Rover guru): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Znapgp2pbb-hipY

You should be fine (mileage is quite low for its age), although it depends on the roads where you are and how much you need to make the vehicle work... Our panhard rod bushes have a habit of wearing out within 10000km's. Not a big problem, but slightly annoying. As I mentioned - it is luck of the draw with these vehicles... No two are alike from the factory - which is an achievement in itself ;-) (what's your opinion on 'handbuilt' or 'coachbuilt'? Rolls tries to sell it as being better! But it was an adventure and achievement getting anywhere, long distances in Oz and trust me it does get cold and wet here, the thing never left me standing I could always fix it, loved it, most of the time!! Wish I still had it.

Respect sir! A notch above our experiences (a Series does rank higher than a Defender on the totem pole IMHO 👍). Especially travelling Oz! And yes - good point - never actually breaks down as much as ridicule will have you believe. Very reliable, except for one instance (if you're interested type this in KZbin): "Smallest moving part on a Defender stranded us in Croatia" 😀 Thanks for your comment! Keep rolling!

@@ASimplyFabLife yes I saw that episode, made me think of that saying Scotty had in one of the Star Trek movies , "the more they update the plumbing the easier it is to stuff up the drain" nerdy hey?! I had things like that on the 109, something's on Land Rovers are simply brilliant others have been designed and manufactured by the first year dislectic apprentice!! You got to love them though.

I have driven Land Rovers all my life in Africa Rhodesia, Rhodesian Army and in Wales, Driven all over the Botswana bush. Once in the army one broke down but I got it going, In Botswana we lost a half shaft in the bush but it still got us to a garage. In 30 years in Wales I have had 4 landys one Broke down and another the clutch went but I poped it into dif lock and it got me to safety. Once in Wales only ever changed one wheel due to a six inch nail. In 4 landrovers in Wales over 30 years I have never had to buy a new wheel. Thats a good record that no other vehicle could emulate. Land Rover the best 4 x 4 by far.

Whilst parking: I always leave it in 1st or reverse depending on the hill slope , I let the clutch bite, then apply the handbrake bite: once I know it is going nowhere, I am happy!

One thing I realised just the other day was, in a normal car when it rains, the rain water across the side windows goes towards the back of the vehicle, not in a defender... The water flows forward when you're driving, automatic side window washing.
@ASimplyFabLife6 жыл бұрын
Never noticed this - must be because the side windows are misted-up all the time...;-)

Agree, I drive a 1985 110 3.5lt V8 petrol ( before being called Defender) won't change it for the world

Nice bit of kit👍 - with a rare(ish) engine, very cool! We had a 1985 90 but it was engine-swapped from the petrol to a Tdi. It was beat on (and dragged through Coratia Trophy) but eagerly served as our daily driver for many years!

Not sure if this has been said, but the driver of a defender or series always has one arm tanned more than other because its always sticking out the open drivers window for a bit more cab space. Even when its cold or raining.

LOL, great video! Funny to see the Landy drivers also have an issue with the door striker like us Jeep guys. Though we don't get holes, we get belt loops pulled off. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely brilliant and absolutely true, but that's why we love them, for all their faults its a brilliant piece of mechanical technology.

Great video, it was just linked on the Australian Land Rover owners forum. I should do one on series Landies, should go about 3-4 hours. You should mention the entertaining "dazzling surround lighting effect" Land Rover provides when a vehicle approaches from ahead ( or behind) at night, the enhanced version is supplied by the Station Wagon. Thanks for posting.

There's a storage space for your flip flops between the seat and the cubby box. Land Rover really thought of everything.

52 and I finally get my first Defender this week, a 2001 TD5. Not discouraged by this video, quite the opposite :) That said... what are these boys at 11:55 ? Steering bushings?
@ASimplyFabLife5 ай бұрын
@@radsy5821 These come off the hockey sticks (front axle trailing arms). They're just an example of the numerous bushes on a Landy. Mostly death wobble is caused by the Panhard rod bushes being knackered. Check there first. Although these hockey stick bushes also last about 50 gl- 100k km. Welcome to the club! No going back now 😅 Enjoy! And thanks for watching (there's a second video exploring more quirky stuff)
