Land Rover Discovery Sport vs Mercedes GLB 2021 comparison review

You're looking for a premium European SUV. You don't want anything too big, but seven seats and all-wheel drive would be a big plus. As would having it all for under $100,000.
Sounds like you want a bit of everything. Luckily for you, there are two new-for-2020 SUVs which will fit your needs nicely. In this comparison test we'll be putting these closely matched seven-seaters head-to-head to help inform your choice.
In the Orange corner, we have the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Having had this particular niche of the market cornered for five years, the Disco is the reigning champ, even if it is by default.
It's been heavily updated for this year, with some significant changes under the skin. We've selected the top P250 petrol engine, in mid-grade SE guise.
Over in the Grey corner is the challenger. The Mercedes-Benz GLB. An all-new nameplate for Mercedes, the GLB sits above the hatch-based GLA, and below the GLC mid-sizer wearing the latest Benz tech and design inside and out.
Unlike the Discovery, the GLB is petrol-only in Australia, and we've selected one in mid-grade GLB 250 trim.

No aconsejo este coche. La marca es premium pero solo en el precio no en la calidad.Tengo un discovery Sport del 2021 y ya me lo entregaron con un defecto de fabricación en el sistema de sonido. Todavía lo tengo pendiente de reparar ya que debido al brexit es complicado la importación de piezas de recambio. Mientras tanto la marca no da solución, solo esperar. Escoged otra marca

I have a DS (yes with extended warranty😉) and in my opinion the 6th&7th seats are clearly just for kids..why adult reviewers get in them and then say it’s small back here is beyond me and totally pointless.

Definitely GLB - I have owned both cars. Just recently traded in my Discovery Sport and bought the GLB. It is such a fun car to drive. The engine is so peppy to drive. Great design and interior. You just want to keep driving. The GLb is miles apart from the Disco Sport. Disco Sport maybe better looking but that's about it.

Since April this year, LRAUS have been giving a 5 yr / unlimited km Wty. This offer goes until September 30, but it seems LR Aus will make it a permanent thing. Disco Sport can do off road use, whereas the GLB is extremely limited off road. DS suspension is tuned to handle off road use, hence its suspension on road has to make some compromises, so that it can handle off road use. U can buy DS with configurable suspension adjustment if u want. 2021 MY DS here in Oz by late 2020. It will have the all new Pivi Pro multi function display, as per new Defender. No lag and a much better unit. 2021 MY DS gets updated motors will a full 48 V mild hybrid tech. No more stop / start lag etc and various other benefits. Unless u r using a DS for short city driving only, buy the DS with a diesel motor. More torque, a much better motor and a diesel gives excellent economy.

Totally agree. The GLB is a great around town vehicle. I found it made me a little nauseous and turns however, similar to the 2009 RAV4. I could see on Highway drives in this vehicle being easy to do, but it’s later weight and Shira wheelbase may not be as comfortable as other vehicles

The glb with the night package and a better colour looks on par with the disco sport. Mercedes has better warranty and reliability

I got the GLB 250 premium Plus , 190 HP , it’s returning 48.2 MPG , and 34.5 around town , ride quality and finish is far better than the Discovery ,

The one piece that sepearws the two and was not mentioned was the off road capability. Disco sport can take you where the GLB cannot and that’s a big advantage for an active family lifestyle.

The higher driving position in the DS is called a Command Driving position and it’s awesome. You mentioned the stadium seating in the Merc but forgot to mention that the DS also has stadium seating (the rear seats are physically higher than the front). Additionally the 2nd row in the DS slides forward and backward quite a few inches and also reclines however if using the third row you would want to keep it a little way forward and upright for the comfort of those in the 3rd row. Lastly because it’s a Land Rover the DS is amazing off road (I own one) and I can’t imagine the Merc is anywhere near as capable, certainly that dual clutch will be a pig off-road. 1st gear in the DS is an extra low ratio (car normally starts off in 2nd) which I’m unsure if the Merc has. The paddle shifters are fantastic in the DS especially for manually downshifting. I’ve not driven the Merc but I love how planted the DS is.

I noticed this was part of his comparison but when you actually compare his position based off the camera shots, he's actually sitting higher in the Merc - both when he mentions the command seating ppsition and when he out driving about. Take a look at his head height against the window and also the steering wheel. Not a fan of either car but just wondering where we he was measuring his position from

I was very tempted to get the DS however after watching your review I'm leaning more towards the GLB. The extra warranty and fuel efficiency is what made me change my mind. Only down side on the GLB is that there is no spare tyre.

The Discovery Sport is more powerful, when you have to overtake, Discovery performance is better, plus Discovery sport has a spare wheel, the offroad performance of Discovery sport is class leading, Discovery is more fuel efficient too

Two beautiful and usefull suvs, I'm just looking for one of these. I'm a Mercedes owner but I have to say in that case I prefer Land Rover for the exterior but I think I'll never buy the Discovery cause of the bad reliability of the brand. I know some friends that have problems with their cars (Velar, Evoque, Sport..). Tell me if you agree.

@@iangarland4290 yes but two days ago the jaguar land rover CEO has announced that cause of the bad reliability they lost 100'000 sells this year, and the 2020 was the worst year in terms of cosumers satisfaction. In 2020 land rover spends 500million for the repair of faults. That doesn't mean every vehicle is faulty but there is an high probability. On the other hand I love Range Rover I want to buy one but i don't trust, so probabily I'll take mercedes.

Just purchased the GLB and love it. Got the sued with red pinstripes seating, along with 3rd row seating. The steering wheel is the best! It’s gigantic inside. Check it out♥️👍🏻

I recently bought a brand new GLB in Hong Kong. The car broke down in only 12 days due to a gearbox issue and it had to sit in back to Mercedes repair center for a month. We took it back after Mercedes claimed that they have fully fixed it, however it broke down again in the middle of the road after just 6 days (with my wife who is currently 28-weeks pregnant onboard). This faulty car has only been driven for less than 500km and its still in repair center now. Due to the safety concern, i demand a full refund or replace a new car as we cannot trust this car anymore. They turned down my request and came back with a counter offered asking me to trade in the current faulty car and buy another new one from them. I was so speechless and our whole family were so disappointed as we have been supporting Mercedes for over 15 years (owned another E class previously) Think twice if you still consider Mercedes as your family car since the gearbox problem has been a major issue in the past few years, friends of mine also having problems with their Mercedes.
