I have a LR 3 discovery which I use daily for my steel fabrication work . I almost always have a 4.5 x 2.2 m trailer in tow . I have the rear kitted out with tool boxes . All in when the trailer is empty Gross weight is 4300kg , the land Rover deals with this effortlessly and returning around 25 MPG . These vehicles are AMAZING .

Excellent series of four videos on the Discover 4, Andrew. To the few critics who claim your support crew moved rocks and or gave you hand signals and such, this is what any intelligent person would do in any off-road situation where it might be necessary to prevent damage to the body panels or the underside of a vehicle. Even a Mercedes Benz Unimog needs help over some obstacles. To all of the above, you prove yourself in this series of videos and your various other videos to be an excellent, high-skilled off-road driver. Well done all the way around! Thanks for posting this series of videos on the Land Rover 4, Andrew! (Andy McKane. I've finally completed moving from my former home in Springville, Utah to Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.)

Andrew, I have watched in the last couple of days a lot of your footage and `I simply love it - for a couple of reasons... you say your genuine personal opinion and you admit your own mistakes and you are able to rethink, but more importantly for as someone grown up in Africa your footage inspires me to get back into a rig and back into overland journeys ... (it has been a long time....) BTW: I can understand why you feel more relaxed after crossing the border .... Thanks a lot for that ....

Shows what a great platform the LR4 is to build the most comfortable, very capable overlander. Put some lift rods, sliders, and steel wheels with big Coopers on it and that is a dream offroad machine for the entire family. Inspires me even more to start my LR build very soon and take the grandkids on some real adventures. Great video.

Same for me - I got my 2016 Disco 4 "Landmark" last August - one of the last of the Disco 4s with only 34k miles on the clock and looking brand new. I have put another 10k on it since then, though - lovely vehicle. 👍 Loved what you said in the first video about being more relaxed when you leave SA - I feel the same way when I cross the channel into mainland Europe.

@reg bell: Those exterior damages were inevitable, no matter what car you use (unless you drive a Suzuki Jimny). Due to the sheer dimension of both vehicles, a Rubicon would've suffer the same wound as the Disco. Also, I don't think a stock Rubicon could pass without relocating the rocks (whether to clear the path or for better traction). I believe the Disco has a more sophisticated traction control than a Rubicon.
@ronaldrrootiii6040
@ronaldrrootiii6040 Жыл бұрын
Actually the two-door Rubicon would have been fine and Rubicon doesn't have traction control it has front and rear lockers from Factory and electric sway bar disconnects Factory and solid axle articulation minimal wheel lifting. Much much much better off road oh and smaller wheels so you can purchase thicker rubber. This is coming from a die-hard disco series to fan by the way I'm not just talking good about Jeep

Very difficult sitting at home watching this with my rig parked outside and not being able to do this run with all of you. Especially for someone like me that grew up in Senegal and Kenya. But I can't help but think...there must be a rule of thumb out there regarding how often or how high rocks must be stacked to qualify or disqualify a vehicle from being "perfectly capable" for a given section of track. But teamwork gets all rigs through and the argument can be made that's how any rig gets through what's put in front of it. It becomes part of the fun. Not just the capability of the vehicle, or the driver, but the mates who are with you. I mean, the ones that bring the beer.

Rule of thumb stops at a bulldozer making a path. The fact that that SUV made is is extraordinary in itself. Moving stuff around to make a path easier of safer is everyday 4WD stuff.
@josephbaker6083

But he was driving a bone-stock 4x4. That pass was one big pile of big rocks. Even the Defenders, which were modified for the terrain, still didn't have enough ground clearance for some of those rocks without some smaller rocks in front and back, they just didn't film that because the video wasn't about how well modified Defenders perform. You have to admit it is surprising how little damage he collected along the way.

I've owned 'nearly' every mainstream Land Rover model there ever was except for Series 1's, 101's or any of the Range Rover's after the 'sharks gills', for me the most impressive of the lot were the Discovery 3 and 4. Not because they were any more capable than the others but because even though they are what they are, ie 'luxury SUV's' they can still perform off road to a remarkable extent and I was left deeply impressed by mine. Of course, I'm happier in my 1963 S2a 109 but I'm probably not quite right in the head anyway...

Helping a 4WD along a path is an everyday 4WD thing. Does the fact that we moved rocks diminish the achievement? If we had not moved rocks, not even the 35"-tired Defenders would have made it undamaged. Had the rule been not to move any rocks, then the conclusion drawn, even before the engine was started, would have been, "No, the LR4 cannot drive this road." And saved us a lot of time and effort.

Andrew, my comment was more humor than an attempt to denigrate the Discovery's achievement! Yes, the Discovery-4 impressed, as did your driving, and I watched knowing it wouldn't -- and yet it did! I enjoy your channel and particularly enjoyed that series. Hat-Tip from the States . . .

Wow, what an amazing vehicle. Well done LR. If you could just sort out your reliabiity... Friend's Disco 4 died at the top of Moteng Pass the other day - burst something in the radiotor piping. We limped to Oxbow and tow truck guy said he "tows lots of the oval badges back to SA". Such a pity that reliability spoils what could be the best 4x4xfar.

This is spreading FUD... I have had 2 Land Rovers - both LR's (Discovery) a 3 and a 4 both had well over 100,000 clocked and regular maintenance both were as reliable if not more reliable as any Jeep (had two of those as well, one was far less reliable and not nearly as comfortable as either of my Land Rovers the other was about the same in reliability but no were near the same comfort level). If you maintain them and fix what needs to be fixed as soon as it needs it they are as reliable as any make out there now... I know its not so much fun to say but the truth often is that way I have found.

@4xoverland 7 жыл бұрын
This is a luxury SUV. And that was the point of this drive. Comparing it with a Lada (which could also do this pass BTW) is pointless. But the Niva a horrible piece of crap, costs pennies, unreliable, uncomfortable and an altogether terrible vehicle. And a Jeep JK is a real off roader, NOT a luxury SUV. So again, making a comparison is pointless. Could a Land Cruiser 200 or Jeep Grand Cherokee make this pass as the LR4 did? Maybe. Could a BMW X5, Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90 do it? Never, ever, unless a helicopter was involved. This is the point of this drive.

@@4xoverland Very well stated, Andrew! My wife had a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel. We bought it new. It spent way too much time in the selling dealer's service department between April 2014 and January 2019. Debbie loved her Jeep, but when it came to deciding which of our two Utah-based cars we would ship to Molokai, and which one we would sell in Utah, Deb quickly made the decision to sell her Grand Cherokee. Why? There are no new car dealerships (for any brand) on Molokai. Over here a vehicle must be reliable, or it quickly becomes junk. So Deb sold her Grand Cherokee and we shipped my 2011 Buick Enclave to Molokai, where it joined our 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I used to drive Land Rovers. I'm interested to see what the new Defender proves to be. From what I've observed so far, the new Defender will not be too far different (but without the luxury touches) of the current L.R. Discovery. Solid beam axles are, in my opinion, what works best in extreme off-road use. Thanks again for your excellent four-part video on the Discovery Four! A. @4xoverland
@4xoverland 9 жыл бұрын
AlphGen Driving over rocks, wearing seat belts can reduce safety because one cannot move enough in the seat to look out of the side windows. Also, the jerking a pulling, the belt can make things extremely uncomfortable, which also reduces driver confidence and safety. Thirdly, sometime when off road, when driving in deep water for example, seat belts can be dangerous. A smart driver reads the conditions and decides on the best for safety.

4xOverland Do you have any plans to do an expedition using a Jeep? Please do and please do it using the same track. So we can settle the Jeep vs Land Rover debate once and for all. Good luck on your next expedition.

4xOverland Sounds reasonable, Offroad training courses teach the wearing of the seatbelt in Australia, partially as many tracks are designated roads so all road rules apply plus they say they don't want you being thrown about the cabin on rougher tracks. I can see when you are crawling over rocks at a very slow speed is different and can be justified. Deep water crossing we all agree on.

The way seat belts work would kill anyone when cross country driving. If a vehicle is anything less than standard angles the release button won’t work. E.g if your vehicle is on its side or upside down the button will not release the belt. So without a knife or belt cutter can not release the clasp. Seat belts are there to save you at high spends as well not low speeds

This has been a fascinating, your history with LR and the intricacies and challenges of this trip. However I felt the video lacking in actual,off road footage. Tended to be quick edits, lots of talking heads, and not very gripping. The storytelling was very good as usual but I just wonder why we didn’t have more car-driving-over-nasty-road footage...

Hell I love Jeeps, but I doubt you can compare performance, comfort and off road ability to a LR4. Wrangler now days are nothing more but a $50,000 toys soccer moms and metro sexuals buy to look tough and to mall crawl.

@@davewilliams6172 I agree I live on the side of a mountain in BC Canada and regularly pass Snow Plows with full chains that are struggling to get up the hills in my stock LR4 (Discovery 4) with all-weather tires (Nokian) fitted. I love how the poor SOB's shoveling out the drive wheels on the Snow Plow frantically wave me off as I roll by without so much as a flicker on the traction control light in Grass and Snow mode! My neighbor has a G Wagon and I see him walking up the hill all the time with his equally capable truck (lacking the right tires and driver) he rolls summer tires all year because they "look better" stuck in a snowbank because he also doesn't know how not to floor the accelerator when the wheels start to lose traction... The LR4 can save you if you're a poor driver but it makes a good driver look like a seasoned pro!

I have a disco Series 2 on 33s and when I watch this video I love the D4 but unfortunately it makes no sense why to this date they put such huge wheels and low-profile tires and make it hard to fit oversized tires underneath that you could are down and get much better footprint. It is single-handedly the most stupid and away from off-roading common thing that Land Rover does now. I mean I get that they know lots of people just use it as a street vehicle and all the off-road features are just in case on some British dirt road mud but they clearly know they have a Heritage and people want to take them off road through extreme things where small wheels with thick rubber are great and the articulation of solid axles instead of independent with a wheel always Raisin in the air because it doesn't fall into a hole when it's aired up all the way for clearance it makes no sense. I'm not saying the new ones can't do things I'm just saying not nearly as tough or effectively and that's the difference when you look at the higher-level brand new Jeep Rubicon line. I don't even own a Jeep and I never have but straight axles with electric sway bar disconnects front and rear Factory lockers... seems like Jeep stay on the right path. Land Rover could at least make one model or even just one trim level of a model the way I described the Jeep. If they had always just been luxury that would be different but the heritage of the defender and the series and even the early disco and Range Rovers should lend to the idea that they still make some solid axle normal four-by-four vehicles. It makes total sense and I guarantee you it would sell

With a bit more packing and a bit more damage, probably. Its all about clearance here. If you don't have it, you don't have it. The Colorado has less, therefore . . .
@fredbrackely
@fredbrackely 6 жыл бұрын
The LR4 is the whole package. The Colorado isn't. The LR4 can do this and is brilliant on road. It has more towing capacity than your Colorado, it has more weight payload capacity than your Colorado, it has more HP and TQ than your Colorado, it is faster than your Colorado, it has better approach, break over, and departure angles than your Colorado, it is more comfortable and quiet than your Colorado, all whilst carrying 7 passengers, who are sipping a cold one from its built in fridge, and enjoying the view from its 3 sunroofs. Look at it another way, if we were playing Top Trumps and I pulled the LR4 card vs your Colorado you'd be screwed.
