Howdie from ZA. I'm in absolute awe and envy after watching this. Cant start to explain the emotions. thank you so much for sharing these old videos. brings back so much of memories! hats off to the ladies for baking a cake on the fire. its a lost art among the modern ladies. Even a normal potato in the fire wrapped in foil. You are by far the best overlanding content creator I've seen thank you for what you give and teach. Hope to see an update on the SA troopy soon.

I absolutely loved watching this. I would’ve been a little older than the age of the birthday girl when this was filmed. This reminded me of my family’s camping trips. I’m full of happy nostalgia right now. Thank you for sharing!

Did the exact same journey solo in 1997, camped at The Eye in Kuruman, sadly no longer possible. Awesome scenery up that way. The Richtersveld is something else.

Andrew and Gwen these are the best home movies I have ever seen. These movies make me feel happy and surely this is what overlanding is all about, family and friends travelling together having fun and enjoying each others company. Your so lucky having these movies to look back at old memories. Love the music to and fits so well with the movie.

I had many great adventures in my one ten. It was my last Landrover, having previously had a couple os series 2a's and series 3. My favourite was my 2a shorty. Though I'm not sure that it would have been that suitable once I had a family to take along.

The most memorable thing about Super 8, was when my maternal grandfather woudl reverse the projector on a film he had made of a dump truck dropping its load. This was before we would know anything about magnetism.

OMG I fainted not a Toyota, lol. So glad to see the 110. To me it will forever remain the quintessential 4x4. My first experience was in a Series 2 when I was 4. Fastforward 60 odd years and I drive a Puma 110 and my daughter a TD5. Compliments for the vintage footage, just beautiful and looked all so innocent and carefree. That commercial had a great touch putting the spout in the tank intake instead of on the jerry can. Well done.

In 40 years I've owned 19 4x4s. There are 5 Land Rovers, 2 Mercedes and the rest Land Cruisers. I moved to Land Cruisers because I was tired of the effort needed to prepare my Land Rovers for expeditions. On the trip in this video, both press Defenders were on loan from Land Rover, one lost its air-con and the other all 4 shocks, which we had to replace at our cost. My own One-Ten had severe steering box issues and the gearbox had starting to make loud noises, which needed rebuilding the same year with only 60K kms on the clock. This doesn't happen with Land Cruisers. It just doesn't! And this is why I drive them. I currently own one Land Rover and two Land Cruisers.

@@4xoverland Sure, but equally the Defenders have improved a bit since you owned one. It does not matter. There is a passion and support in the Defender community which I think is amazing. I have not encountered that in any other car brands. And the Land Rover Defender community is wider spread around the world. I appreciate you love your Land Cruiser. You are passionate about that car.
@4xoverland

good discussion. The love of Land Cruisers worldwide must top a similar love for Defender by a factor of 20 or more. You are probably not aware of it, because its not part of your world. The difference is this: A Land Rover fan rarely has any interest in anything but the brand. They tend to fixate on it. My recent Range Rover series got me a ton of new subscribers most of whom left when I restarted posting Land Cruiser content. Many, if not most Land Rover owners considers Toyotas as lifeless, and without soul. I know this. Because 30+ years ago, this was me. Then after a period with Land Cruisers I learned that there is a following every bit as passionate. But around the campfire, Land Rover owners tend to talk of little else, but their cars, what they want to fix or add to it. Land Cruiser owners talk far more about places they want to go. I remember reading many, many articles in 4WD magazines. On Land Rover trips, articles were typically 90% about the vehicles, but with Land Cruiser trips, talk about the cars rarely exceeded 10%. And this is because Land Rovers tend to make themselves part of the story. Land Cruisers not so much. I've driven both on extended expeditions. And so I have first hand experience.

@@4xoverland I am not aware what happens in Land Cruiser world as it is not my world. I assume you talk about the whole Land Cruiser family regarding your factor 20, where is I am more comparing the Troopy world to the Defender world. Anyway it does not matter. My father in-law (rest his soul) was a Toyota man and no good word for Defenders until I had to rescue him one time in his Land Cruiser Sahara. He never owned one, but only went on the military experience his brother had with Defenders. The old chestnut you go out with 3 and come back with 2. Family... sigh, all in good jest. I guess LR owners tend to talk more about their cars as they have more issues then Toyotas. I am not one of them. I like a nice little talk about the car, but get bored quickly. I owned many luxury SUVs (BMW, AUDI,VW), but the Defender always had a special place with me since South Africa when I was a 4/5 yr old boy. My Defender is my daily driver. We almost bought an Ineos Grenadier too. And as much as I love the car there are many other things I find more important then the Defender. And I guess like you if you are on trip and sit around the fire, the last thing I want to talk about is the car.

Wonderful, thanks for sharing this. Simpler times. So much of this “overlanding” thing has just become gear oriented, we used to just say we going on a camping road trip. Then as now, your trips don’t involve vehicles with stupidity high lifts and cartoon size tires, which in America it seems we need to go to Starbucks.

Being a professional film editor, I transferred all the footage to Sony U-Matic, edited it, then mastered it on 8mm video tape, and much later digitized it. So these are 4 generations down from the original footage.

Of course your stories were interesting then despite the quality, you had land rovers! Breakdowns made for great stories. PS. hope you'd get another classic defender and classic G and do it with modern accessories. Apply all the knowledge you've gained in the last 4 decades with ,odern shocks, tires, drawer systems, etc The 70 series has been long in the tooth already.
