I worked at Gardner in the 1970s in the crankcase division, engines would come back in running condition with over 1 Million miles on the clock for reconditioning and went back out with many of the origional parts on them. They had no sump gaskets and never leaked and steel shim head gaskets that never leaked such was the fine tolerences they were machined to. Sadly they are no more but if you wanted a reliable donkey to do work, this was probably one of the best.

Great channel, seeing the Land Rover with the 4LK fitted reminded me of an old friend here in Jersey who bought a brand new Land rover in 1973, not long after he proceeded to remove the original engine/gearbox assembly. He fitted a 4LK engine which had some sort of Jaguar gearbox fitted .If i remember rightly it came out of a Lagonda. It was only 2wd and he fitted larger rear wheels to raise the gearing. It was used like this for many years, sadly Jim or the Land Rover are with us anymore.

The Land Rover content brought me to the channel, now thoroughly enjoying the world of Gardner diesels too.

So interesting, even to a non engineer like me. I lived through the period in Oz when we had Gardner powered buses but they have all gone now except for Commercial vehicles car shows.

I like the knocking sound of the Gardner. A lot of work is behind you, isn't it. We swapped the 2.25 petrol for a 200Tdi Discovery engine. Mine is a 109 S3 (1984) ex-mod FFR, LHD.

Really great job, there is a video on KZbin of a 4LW in a MF35. Serious amount of thinking went into that.

Glad I stumbled across this video. I was a restoration engineer for many years, motorcycles and prewar cars were my main area. I sort of fell into doing Meadows 4ED engines, they were very finicky with fitment of parts. Nothing was really standardised on them, just getting components to go together was horrendous, especially with the newly cast stuff we were having done. I'd come from doing early Japanese and 60's/70's motorcycle engines prior to those and I was not prepared for what I let myself in for.

Love your videos. You have a wealth of knowledge. I have recently bought a Gardner 6 cylinder 180. Have to lift it soon. No doubt i'll be giving you a buzz!

I’d love to have a drive in that. I like gardner engines. A mate had an eight cylinder in his 34 scammell. Looks like a lot of work I’ve fitted a 200 tdi in mine and it’s fits so easily. Pretty revvy and torqueless by comparison, I’d think!

That engine will still be running long after the LR around it has rusted away! 😁 OK, joking aside, "built to last" isn't a phrase used very often these days but a Gardner certainly qualifies, built in a bygone era with a different design brief to many of todays "throw away" engines. Back in the 70's all our local buses had Gardner engines. A friend of mine was a truck fanatic as his Dad drove an artic and he would often come home in the tractor unit, a Guy BigJ4T, "with a Gardner180", he would say with a big grin on his face. 👍

What a lovely engine in that Landie. It’s almost tempting to go and buy one just to get it fitted with a Gardner engine at Joe’s. Now, what’s the phone number of my bank manager...

No problem, it’s a curiosity question really - I’ve had VW transporters for 20 years and transits before that always diesel - drove route master buses for a couple of years in the early eighties - really enjoy your videos btw 👌

Though, from what you are saying, the Gardner engine is the one everyone would want fitted in their truck, the complexity of the necessary modifications, and the resulting compromised reliability and functionality of the end setup, not to mention the expected associated high cost for the conversion, render the project not nearly worthwhile. And it sounds uncomfortably noisy too inside the cabin.

I'd rather have a 200tdi fitted. This Garndner is way too heavy. 200tdi is a great engine. Very mechanical and long lasting. To bad it has a timing belt but these are long lasting.
