Bonnet (hood) popping up, yep. In 1970 I started work at a new garage one Monday morning and all went well until Wednesday. I had done a tune up on a nice little red MGA and took it for a test drive. With no warning the bonnet flew up and slammed against the top of the windscreen. Didn't break the glass but the bonnet was bent back and distorted. I thought I would be told to pack up my tools and look for another job but fortunately the boss had a sense of humour and all ended well. The panel shop down the road fixed it all up.

Had the same happen to my Metropolitan convertible on an October night in 1962. On the way home from the Pennsylvania required biannual inspect (+ lube/oil change) after hitting a pot hole the night got dark ahead! Fortunately I was in a small village only going 35 mph. Suddenly I couldn't see the headlights on the road! I thought I had been Halloween pranked! But was able to stop safely, the hood was bent, the windshield and top were ok, I tied the hood down with a chain tightener to continue by sticking my head out the window. The bent crease exhibited imprints of the fabric weave for the local body to repair the hood the next week. Years later I bought a Petty blue Levi Gremlin X from that AMX dealer.

@Veikra 2 жыл бұрын
@@REDZ28won I have experience on both side of the coin. FOr instance the oil filter location on crown victoria and town car is crap, but it makes sense when you think the same engine goes in pickup trucks which sold a lot more units. In another case, the 4.2L audi v8, the change was possible and made sense. They changed the lenght of one starter bolt so you can more easily replace the starter starting in 2007 and up. It used to require dropping the subframe. Theres a lot of constraint to build a engine, multiple vehicule use, thin time allowance and marketing, reusing off the shelf components and after sale services are often in the way. Then you have EPA forcing you to jam catalytic converters right agaisnt the engine preventing o2 sensor replacement or blocking other components. We'd all like a easily serviceable device or car, but everywhere the gov makes sale tax theres an incentive to make everything more costly. And on that point, I agree with you. Lets just try to see the bigger picture.

It seemed that trend started 20 years ago. i remember my father asking me to help to change a burned out headlight bulb in his Dacia(or Daewoo?). Right one no problem, left side: A/C compressor in the way to remove the plug with the bulb. The user manual commented on that and recommended changing at a service station because you had to change the bulb from below and needed to lift the car :-( I have less problem with needing to take something apart to change a part that should have a long lifetime, but consumables like bulbs? You should be able to swap them at the side of the road while it rains without any additional tools.

Nah, they have to fit every luxury feature and every safety feature into same space as they did when cars didn't have any of that. Yes cars are larger but that is mostly because of larger trunks, crumple zones and airbags everywhere. Another specialty of European cars in particular is European customer behavior... people who buy new upper end and luxury vehicles here (EU) usually sell them immediately when their warranty ends and components like AC compressor usually last longer than that and thus are not manufacturer's problem anymore when they break after the warranty period. Reparability is still there, components are available but how long it takes to repair something is of no concern for manufacturer... they saved 20 bucks by placing that compressor there... 20 x lets say 600 000 cars is a lot of money.

You can also pre-position it and it usually will hold it for you to make the connection without it moving or falling down to the 90 Deg position, make sure to wrap it tightly and cover the u-joint completely. Hope this helps you it works for me.

I'm surprised you didn't have to remove a bunch of engine parts like when you replaced the alternator on the dodge caravan. I still hate where these engineers place vital components in places where it's almost impossible to get to. Especially ones that need eventual replacement which is pretty much all of them lol

Man, I wouldn't be able to know or remember where all those nuts an bolts go, I had to tear half my engine apart just to get at replacing the timing chain, timing house gasket, water pump, and oil pan gasket, I came up with and system, used brown paper bags itemize the bags and put the nuts, bolts, and parts together in each bags and it worked, screwed up one time, and extra bolt was left over that goes on to that part, after that, I torque everything to it specs 1 1/2 year later no Ieaks and didn't have to go back and redo any of my work, take your time, tighten everything to it specs and remember to walk away when a part giving you a hard time, after that, the work you done will be well appreciated.

I use plastic food containers (quart size) with lids from Smart and Final. You can get fifty for just a few bucks.. Write the locations the bolts came from on the lids. They can be reused many times, and they stack when empty, taking up little space. After several jobs, you will have collected the whole set!

The bad thing about getting hard to reach nuts/bolts or ones you can't see, oily ones or what have you, is that once you FINALLY get them out and all happy about it is you gotta get them back in somehow too! When my shop closed I had to go to work at one of the parts retailers(I won't say which), and one of my loyal customers came to me with a Honda of all things to replace the Nator. That thing was one of the most pain in my rear seating cushions that I've ever seen! Love your channel man! PLEASE don't ever shut it down!!! I told my wife when I'm not working on one myself I watch Rainman to get more ideas and almost like another set of eyes!

Dude, you really do need to put your seat belt on every time you go to drive. It's obvious that you do not put your seat belt on at all as you would have built up muscle memory action over time from the repetition and would not forget to put it on. I'm a retired UPS driver, so yeah I know putting the seat belt on takes a little extra time, but it's worth that little bit of time to keep you safe. I'm not trying to be a dick, just want to see you stay safe. I do enjoy your vids, thanks.

If you got it blowing cold (and even if you didn't) it would make no sense to replace such an expensive part 1,000 miles from home. What happens if the new compressor dies a month later? They have to drive 1,000 miles back to get it fixed?

I don't think even wobbly sockets work well with a 90deg bend, yet somehow you made it work. My brother used to pay me $5 a sparkplug to R&R them from his 69 Mach 1 Cobra Jet. The dealer would actually disconnect the motor mounts and jack up the engine to get to them, but I managed with my compound wobbly sockets and scraped knuckles of course; man that car was scary fast.
