OK, here we go - off to one of my favourite places in the whole world! Landcruiser Mountain Park for a boys weekend of mucking around. Pure old school fun and while this might have been filmed a few years ago, not a lot has changed. Go on, if you haven't been to the Park for a while, give it a go!
When there’s really great people like Alben and Helen Perrett who open up their own properties for us four wheel drivers to enjoy to the fullest, you get a whole new persepctive on four wheeling in Australia. Nothing proves the fact that we enthusiasts can be trusted to look after the country we love more than Landcruiser Mountain Park, Queensland’s first privately owned wilderness park with 10,000 acres to play in and over 200 kilometres of 4WD trails and every sort of wash out, hill climb, gully and creek crossing to deal with.
Not only that the park has plenty of grassy, shady areas next to creeks where you can relax and enjoy a camp fire, some of the best camping in south-east Queensland.
Alben was away chasing bulls up in the Gulf when we arrived and Helen was promoting Queensland tourism somewhere down in Victoria. But their daughter Tash was manning - womaning? - the office when we checked in and it was great to catch up with her and Wal, Alben’s off-sider in his hunting, fishing and camping adventures up the Cape and about as fair dinkum bloke as you’d ever meet.
Tash and Wal told us that since the floods there were a lot of tracks that hadn’t been driven.
The Park map is one of the most accurate of it’s kind anywhere in terms of describing the various levels of difficulty but as Wal pointed out, a lot of it would be an unknown quantity because the rains had not only shifted things around, they’d kept the numbers of visitors down too.
That translated to if we wanted adventure, we’d be able to find plenty of it.
And we did, as you’ll see in the DVD. First track out was the little Camp Road run, basically just a few hundred yards of totally awkward ruts and twists. There’s a hard track, and then an impossible one right next to it. So we warmed up on the hard one and then I smashed Milo’s right rear quarter out on the other one! Old Milo, locked up at both ends, had climbed to an almost impossible angle before lurching from one side to the other and belting the side of the gully.
And that's just the kick off track - watch out, it gets hairy!
