I've flown like 6x (12x takeoffs and landings) in the past 4 years on frontier and spirit, to Vegas no less (air is choppy esp during the summer) and all the takeoffs and landings have been smooth as silk. My home airport has a very steep descent profile because of buildings and they always land smooth here too. I only recall once where the landing was a little firm, but not bad (nobody was startled)

I've read comments in other videos where people claim that harder landings are better because it means the aircraft is more stable and easier to control on the ground. While some of that *might* be true, I'm not fully convinced that harder landings are better for the aircraft long term. I know they're built to withstand it, but that doesn't mean you should do it every time...

Actually the MD11 does not have a pronounced tendency to bounce. I flew MD11 for 8 years and never had a bounce. However, if you do bounce there is only one correct response: go around, which this crew did. When the spoilers deploy the plane has a tendency to pitch up, which is clearly visible in this video. It is very difficult to recover a landing from that. There have been several DC10 and MD11 hull losses due to asymmetrical hard landings with the gear strut bottoming out and shearing off the rear wing spar, resulting in the plane flipping on its back…

Here are some numbers to go with the Narita accident, where continuing an approach which had become unstable* led to a few NLG-first bounces followed by "The airplane sink rate was estimated to be 21.5 fps at the third touchdown. It is highly probable that the airplane's kinetic energies at the third touchdown exceeded the certification requirements by almost seven times." * "The range of CAS fluctuation was from 152 to 180 kt which was 12 kts slower and 16 kts faster than the selected approach speed of 164 kts. This exceeded the stabilized approach criteria. The pilot monitoring called "stabilize" and most likely let the pilot flying continue approaching, disregarding airspeed deviation of more than Vapp plus 10 kt."

Here's a story about hammering landing gear. While the aircraft carrier I was on was in the Mediterranean, the Admiral from the base in Naples, Italy wanted to get in some flight time, so he borrowed an A-7E Corsair from one of the squadrons. When he came in for a landing, he hit so hard that he completely collapsed the landing gear. Needless to say, that plane didn't fly again until it got back to NAS Cecil Field to be rebuilt.

It amazes me how wind can throw off a large aircraft, but that just goes to show you how delicate the physics of flight are.
@ahmeduygun7320
@ahmeduygun7320 Жыл бұрын
It is important to note that the phenomenon of flight is inherently tied to the behavior of air. Therefore, the motion of an aircraft can be influenced by the natural movements of the surrounding air. In this sense, the ability of wind to impact the trajectory of a large aircraft is not surprising, as it is a consequence of the delicate and intricate interplay between the aircraft and its environment.

I watched the first landing in slow motion, and going by the wing flex, it wasn't super hard. I suspect that the "bounce" was helped a little by a gust? Making it look worse than it was?
@marcmcreynolds2827
@marcmcreynolds2827 Жыл бұрын
I also always "check the wing flex" in trying to decipher these... and there wasn't much. OTOH, that touchdown appeared close to the design sink rate (former airliner landing gear dynamics engineer), so I'm wondering if the first-mode bending frequency of the wing just happened to be such that the rebound dynamics canceled most of the wing flex. A "stealth" hard landing? Edit: Except when I examined the sequence of events around touchdown once again, I wasn't able to construct a plausible case for such a flex-canceling interaction. In any event, it was well past the normal range for touchdown sink rates (4-6 fps) and perhaps pushing close to the "design" sink rate (maximum sink rate at touchdown for which there is no damage, even at maximum landing weight).
