So much ignorance on this page... Here is what you just watched: Aircraft on final with a strong headwind coming slightly from the right. Pilot "crabbing" the aircraft nose into wind to keep it flying a straight path onto the runway (standard procedure). "Wind shear" (different wind speeds at different heights) caused the aircraft to lose lift suddenly. Aircraft touched down early while still yawed to the right, causing a partly sideways impact of the undercarraige on the runway. Subsequent small bounce. Would qualify as a "rough landing" and would have been reported to company engineers for a check of the undercarraige before next flight. Was marginal but not life-threating or overly dramatic. Would not qualify as an "incident" worthy of reporting to safety authorities. (Written by a pilot for 28 years who does not debate tossers on the internet. The "mute" and "block" button are the best features on KZbin.)
@amaze2n7 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I appreciate the explanation, but you have to realize most people are not pilots, let alone experienced ones. There is going to be ignorance abound, especially on a viral video like this. Doesn't mean that all of them are tossers, as you put it. The internet is full of tossers, but to attribute all ignorant comments to that category of people makes you seem like... a bit of a tosser.

@swordmasteral7 жыл бұрын
I'd consider them both around the same safety-wise, the 787s problems stemmed from it's lithium ion battery which has since been recalled, I was talking more about it from the maintenance standpoint (as an aircraft maintenance engineer myself) I find Boeings systems much more technician friendly than those on Airbus aircraft

not scary for regular passengers, without any nervous breakdown or phobias. it isn't that bad in the cabin, especially when one is belted in. it does look bad from this view to see such a large object just loose height like that and then bounce. but inertia is transferred once we are belted to a seat that is grouted to the floor that is connected to the fuselages

One of the reasons aviation is as safe as it is; these things are designed and built tough as hell! A must see for any design and maintenance engineer! No matter your load cases, this is reality. I was on a flight back from Denver to Pittsburgh and there was a storm. Right before the landing all the flight attendants went through the cabin multiple times telling everyone that it was going to be a "bumpy" landing and to stay buckled. as we made the approach you could tell there was something wrong. Not only did we drop fast but the whole aircraft seemed to shudder and felt like we were tiltled and not straight. Then all of a sudden it seemed like a split second before you feel the wheels touch down everything was smooth as silk.. and the landing was the smoothest landing I think Ive ever experienced.. even the attendant got over the speaker and said thats how we do it on southwest airlines..enjoy your stay. lol. you could feel the entire plane give out a collective sigh from holding their breaths

So... from the audio it was extremely windy at the location, this kind of landing is to be expected in those conditions. I also would say that wasn't the limit of the landing gear, it could have probably turned another few degrees and compressed another few feet towards the plane. Landing gear is designed to take this kind of stress without fail time and time again. Personally this is a cool shot, but I don't think the plane came anywhere near crashing. I mean look the pilot even with the plane sideways landed damn near dead center on the runway he obviously knew what he was doing, and the plane he was flying.

Tyler Christensen The reason this is different than other landings is this plane bottomed out its landing gear, landing relatively sideways is normal, hitting that hard is not. The passengers felt the brunt of it I bet, but it has so many views because most people expected to see a crash.

Crazy how much of a beating the gear can take…. I landed a few weeks ago with a landing light out on a very dark night (Therefore couldn't see the runway for shit) Thought i was closer to the ground then i really was and flared higher then i should and stalled about 10 ft above the ground and slammed that gear into the ground. Was thinking the man above that the gear held up! I was honestly shocked and scared not only for the plane but i felt that landing the next day haha! Thats just what makes flying so fun!
