Landing in Goodwood, the temple of motorsports

Visit in VL3 of Goodwood (EGHR) after a stop in Calais to clear customs (attention, new procedure since the Brexit and passport required in addition to the traditional GAR).
Particularly nice welcome, from the ATC to the restaurant staff.
Goodwood, former RAF base (as often in the UK), is a huge grassy runway, incredibly flat.
It is also the home of Spitfires.com, which flies 2 two-seater Spitfires and operates several others in single-seaters.
There are also T6s, Extra 300s, Slingsby T67s, PA-18 Cub, Boeing Stearman and more.
The field is surrounded by a race track where the cars are constantly practicing.
And for the non-English speakers, a little radio exercise (FCL.055) :-)

Yes, it's crazy! And plenty of activity in Goodwood and also a car circuit around the field! It's a paradise!

@@pierreleparrain Good to hear from you Pierre! I'm assuming you've been especially busy lately. I can relate. I've been absolutely swamped for months! Which is why I just bought a 1946 C140 (Restoration Project!!). My eventual objective will be to (finally) start getting a lot (any) airtime, and in a taildragger, for the stick and rudder skills! Then I'll save my "lunch money" for the VL3 Turbine. : )

Wouw Cousin ! A C140 ! It's a wonderful plane! This type of plane must have a very retro livery, I love it! Do you have a lot of work on it? When do you think you will fly it?

@@pierreleparrain Well, that's the thing. It's a complete restoration project. My dad and one of my best friends were just flabbergasted, saying (truthfully), "Ken, the last thing you need is another project!" LOL I don't know Pierre. I know it sounds crazy, but it's actually motivating me to take care of a lot of things I should have a long time ago. Of course, the real objective is to fly, and this could take a couple of years. It just depends. I've watched a couple of Professionals restore them (A&Ps, & IAs), and it is an incredible amount of work, for people that know what they are doing! And someone I know at AOPA (one of the top A&Ps) was telling me to just find one that flies already, so I can get hours in, unless building an aircraft is what I want to do. (He said that even for him, it would be a huge project, and probably more expensive than just finding one that's ready to fly.) We'll see how it goes. I'm trying to get my dad to go with me to pick it up. I'm at his house now, working on restoring a Flatbed trailer I've had sitting outside here for many years, so I can go pick it up. 1,400 miles! (2,253 km) It's going to be 700 miles each way to go get it. (It's on the Oregon coast. A little further north and about 150 miles west of where Bob's Lanceair is from. The Lanceair JMB was showing at Friedrichshafen last year. The one at the end of your video.) So for the past month and a half, I've also been working on completely clearing out my Garage! (It's been FULL of storage for years!) That's where I'm going to start working on it.

Il faut un passeport et il faut compléter un formulaire pour les douanes avant de quitter l'Europe. Et systématiquement attendre la douane en France.

Goodwood est un terrain historique de la RAF. Il s'appelait à l'époque Westhampnett. Il a servi pendant la WWII, il dépendait de Tangmere, qui, lui, a malheureusement été fermé dans les années 70. A Goodwood/Westhampnett, je pense qu'il y avait une escadrille de Spitfire et une de Hurricanes.

Hi Steve !, This was my 7th airfield in the UK (Sandown, Duxford, Oxford, Headcorn, Dunkeswell, Shoreham and thus Goodwood). The welcome on the ground is always incredible in the UK. There is an incredible difference there. You can feel that aviation, even recreational aviation, is important and respected. It's different from Belgium where we are just tolerated. And less and less. And it's the same in France. So yes, this flight to Goodwood was fantastic :-) Except that the customs procedure has changed in Europe since the Brexit and I got fined 300€ for not respecting it. But I didn't know that. Anyway, I'm going to wait until the procedures for customs clearance are clearer to come back to the UK :-) I've also been to the Flying Legend in Duxford in 2016 or 2017 (by car) and the attitude of the public in the UK is nothing like what you see here. I don't know why but you can see and feel that the British are so much more respectful and love aviation so much more than the Belgians or the French! Good flights in Lydd and if you ever come to Belgium, let me know!

@@pierreleparrain Ah very good, been to more than me, I best correct that. I guess it depends where you are. At an airfield people are there because they like planes, talk to some people living on the flight path they may have a different view, even if the houses were built after the airfield. There is also the history around the war birds which has a firm place here. We do have a few that are becoming anti GA, with increasing prices to deter it. We still have a huge number of farm strips and the like. Not been in Europe yet, but in time I will have a comparison. €300 ouch! Brexit is a bit of a mess! Hopefully with time, it will sort itself out. Happy flying and look forward to more videos.
