@@hint0122 of course it takes oil to produce and install a wind turbine, but once installed it only takes 6-12 months of power production (depending on the size of the generator inside the wind turbine) to offset the carbon emissions that it took to build it. Vestas new 4.2 MW land based turbines become energy neutral in 4.8 months if they run at full load all the time, so even being conservative within a year it's still clean. Oil and gas is still very important, but lying about other energy sources to make a point isn't the best way to go about it (coming from the son of a father who has worked in the oil fields his entire career and I work in the power industry).

@@hint0122every technological improvement is built upon the previous one. The same way the world moved from carbon (which is way dirtier and hazardous than oil) to oil using carbon for the transition. And oil companies ARE moving to wind and solar because it’s becoming cheaper and cheaper to produce. Oil is used for way more things than just transportation but in 20-30 years we will be using it l exclusively for that things and not to run vehicles.

It's actually called a "surface" lease. The surface estate is servient to the mineral estate, which has to accommodate surface use pursuant to Getty Oil co. v. Jones, 470 S.W.2d 618 (Tex. 1971). Naturally, it's a pretty complex subject which is continually evolving. The Texas Supreme Court is the go-to authority on the subject of fluidic hydrocarbon extraction.

@@DavidSugg-s8y On the other hand, oil companies, while not necessarily seedy and corrupt, are only focused on production and distribution of their product (which is already a difficult job). So they're not going to get themselves involved in drug interdiction unless it somehow affects the production and distribution of energy (which it never would).

It's a SURFACE lease not a service lease. Oil companies have rights to the subsurface minerals but if they do not own the land, they have to lease the surface in order to get access to extract the minerals

The scene itself may be out there and unrealistic, and we even missed the unalive guy it starts with, but the picture this scene gives about just how powerful big oil and big business in general is, that part is VERY realistic and VERY true. Excellent show. Only wish I could binge the entire season right now. Only 6 episodes total in season one I think I read so thats a big bummer as well.

I had a friend that did the same. As I understand it however, being a landman isn't as necessary as it once was. That is, not as necessary to the business of finding and pumping oil. Times change, technology changes. Geologists are not as needed either.

Math: $6.4 million x 18262 (fifty years) = $116.9 billion. That’s 2.3 billion a year. It’ll take the oil company three years to recoup the cost, and that’s not assuming maintenance, labor, transportation, taxes, etc.

Paramount needs to correct the title of this. It is called a "Surface Lease" not a "Service Lease." There are already so many inaccuracies with the show. They left out all the hours us Landmen spend in dusty courthouse chaining title, hours spent in spreadsheets and emails and calls :) haha

It’s the one scene from Landman that involved the actual work Landmen do, minus the fact that it’s not usually at gunpoint. Someone from Paramount just titled this wrong. There’s no such thing as a “service lease” in this context.
