Cool new Tele kit! But kit instructions only cover most use cases, not all. We still have to learn about and keep track of pickup polarity with any new installation of pots and switching whether soldering or using quick connects. I put an Obsidianwire coil split kit into a Les Paul with splittable mini humbuckers and ended up out of phase in middle position. Turns out Gibson Reverse Wind Reverse Polarity their new bridge humbuckers and changed the wire colors from the neck pickup convention. Online forums showed me the new Gibson color codes so I reversed the polarity into the Obsidianwire connector (NSN on Neck, SNS on bridge) from what their instructions show. Now it's in phase for humbucker middle and single coil middle is noiseless, as it should be. Tons of modders run into phase issues, trick is to understand what's happening and go on from there.

Obsidian version seemed more open and spacious sounding. What I like about the Obsidian wiring component kits is ease of installation and they look like top build quality. I cannot afford expensive guitars but it's on the pots and switching where cheaper ones usually cut corners. I may well upgrade my Squire Contemporary Tele with one of these kits in the future not that there is a lot wrong with it as it is. Good demo of this upgrade - thanks.

I'm a constant critic of all things on KZbin but you're absolutely right, this is a game changer. They have a HSS switch that allows the humbucker to have the 500k pot and the neck a 250K pot. I've always hated the normal HSS configuration because it forces you to put a 500K pot on a neck pickup which makes it sound too bright and lacking warmth. And I kept asking myself, why doesn't fender change the pickup resistance when you change the pickup with a switch? How hard can it be? Well it looks like they've done it.
@Oats572 жыл бұрын
Slightly clearer tones with the Obsidian. Nice!👍🏻

what didn't capture well was the low end. it was almost non existent with the 250k, but moving to the 500k it was more balanced with the bass I get on the neck pickup

Lace are definitely clean & powerful, the red “single” coil measures 17! 😳 I have an HSH Ibanez strat copy, no quack strat 2&4 sounds, all power, Rabea massad bridge 15, SD Parallel Axis neck at about 8.2, so for me it’s perfect……the one thing I will say is the Lace has a very flat EQ curve, again perfect for my purposes, it blends with the others beautifully, but I won’t be playing just the center much, by itself, not a lot of character like the humbuckers, won’t do feed back alone for one thing, despite all its gain, but both 2&4 positions will….try that with a normal strat🙂
@jonathanstrand24742 жыл бұрын
My strat also has 2, 3 position switch’s for the humbuckers, so in theory I can do 3 single coils if I want, but mostly I use series or parallel wiring on the humbuckers and THAT Plus no 60 cycle hum is why I chose the lace sensor

I couldn't pick too much between them, it sounded more like a mic proximity change, which really isn't the point here (imho). As Robert Grout pointed out, the different impedance settings might open up more tones. All that aside, there's immeasurable value for those that don't solder confidently. Great demo Landon, tons of fun.

Gasp, oh this is cool. I've never considered using a trimpot for the resistor in a guitar circuit. It's not a game changer because the game is still the same. They definitely did up the game though. Obsidian Wire - if you don't want to solder and want a more modern approach. 920D - If you don't mind soldering and want some more obscure wiring. Both companies are fantastic, I have used both of them countless times now. Pretty much any fender below a Pro II I have gutted and changed the wiring and it makes a big difference, especially Squires and Player series, I mean they have to cut money from somewhere while making a great guitar that is playable its usually cheap electronics and hardware that can easily be subbed out. If you have a 2-point player strat, it's a bit more expensive but the Hipshot Contour bridge is such a massive upgrade.
