This is something that is also overlooked: MAMAMOO joins the ranks of Destiny's Child, The Spice Girls, and TLC as the ONLY girl groups to sell over 70,000 tickets on their FIRST tour in the USA. This makes MAMAMOO the ONLY girl group to achieve this milestone AFTER a 21-year gap. AND the ONLY Non-English speaking girl group to accomplish such a feat.

man, mamamoo got me into kpop in 2018. i knew them before i ever heard of bts and i ult ult them today. these girls have sooo much talent it is absolutely ridiculous. if rbw wasn’t the dumb company that they always are, they really could have skyrocketed with the hip comeback. they had a fantastic year and era with that one nonetheless, but especially with album sales and promotions there was soooo much more to do. and kpop stans just love to have a hate b0ner for mamamoo, just like they do for bts.

You really touched on at the end the very reason why I recommended this video, because it really is so BAFFLING that Mamamoo isn’t always mentioned when it comes to the biggest girl groups. Whenever people talk about the Big 3 of the 3rd Generation, they always just list the three groups that came out of the Big 3 Agencies during that time and just… aren’t we done with this? No hate on those groups, but it really just shows how much that Big 3 privilege and opportunity lingers. I honestly think that if you ever had to pick a girl group that truly reflects the things that a majority of people love about BTS, it’s be Mamamoo. Idols that are each talented enough on their own to sustain solo careers, making incredible music in a large variety of genres, self-produced with a big influence over their careers and image, speaking up about social justice issues despite the backlash, consistently singing live, who share an incredibly close bond and love for each other, underdogs who had to work their asses off to get to where they are and largely relied on their passionate fan base to get there. It’s all mirrored, and I think tbh that this might be where the companies influence really shows. I don’t think there’s any malice on RBW’s part, but I think they definitely made some bad choices that limited the girls opportunities, especially with not marketing them to an international audience sooner. They had trouble growing in Korea because of Big 3 preference and the attitude towards them from those who don’t appreciate their feminist message, approaching the western market sooner where those things are more valued could have pushed them higher, but instead they didn’t get any US concerts until this year and have barely ever visited Europe or Australia, never having a full concert in either place, just having festival appearances. They clearly have the talent and drive, it’s just that the company genuinely seems to have no idea what to do with them. I’m not saying Bighit didn’t make some mistakes along the way, but taking the riskier opportunity to expand and get BTS’s music in front of more people, rather than playing it safe clearly worked. Not to say that they should be as big as BTS, that’s clearly a rare lightning in a bottle moment in time. But from an objective standpoint, rather than a comment on the talent of any of the idols involved, Blackpink being the biggest girl group after how YG has failed to make any interesting developments in their musical identity, only released a handful of songs spread YEARS apart, while their girl power/girl crush image is always contingent on the fact that all of their music was written and produced by a man- it just doesn’t make sense without the fact that despite utter mismanagement, the marketing has pushed them to the top. This is not an attack on BlackPink, fully on YG, but no one even TRIES to come for Mamamoo’s music or their talent, because they’ve always been put in positions that make them shine, even if it’s not as brightly as they deserve. It just frustrates me so much

oh my god you've read my mind! while working on the video i actually pondered on talking about these arguments until i decided to solely focus on them and hope people would draw their own interpretation out of it (which you explained perfectly). but uhhhh as an army it drives me a little crazy that the girls aren't more recognized while having truly similar skills/journey as the tannies. thank you for articulating this sentiment so well!

@@nahiseokie oh my god, I’ve been thinking about this for SOOOO long, thank you for making a video that really brought those things to the forefront to me. I will never hate on other groups or fandoms, but the fact that Mamamoo isn’t the top girl group makes absolutely no sense to me, the fact they’ve rarely been in the top five makes ZERO SENSE. They have all the qualities that made BTS not just the biggest group globally but highly respected artists who others emulate and strive to match the standard they set, yet somehow they just don’t get the same treatment If you ever want to make a video about the comparison directly (would it be spicy? Yes, but it would be AMAZING) I would love to see it. Even if you just wanna talk to someone and bounce ideas about it back and forth I’m totally game, I have not run into enough Armymoos

When I first got into BTS (2018), the ONLY other group that got my attention in the award shows was Mamamoo. They just stood out, were obviously talented ans sang LIVE (like BTS), and held my attention. I went to their concert movie with a friend who wanted to go a couple months ago and it was amazing!

Sorry, I have no explanation for why Mamamoo isn't a global phenomenon other than blaming RBW for sucking at promoting their artists, none of whom have achieved the level of success you'd think they would based on their talent. However I don't think that explains why Mamamoo albums typically sell around 100K copies while other kpop groups' albums sell in the millions, including rookie groups who lack the talent and track record to justify that kind of disparity. I'll take artistry over popularity any day but it's hard to understand why a group this talented and influential isn't more popular. The songs you said you hadn't heard where Goodbye by Wheein, Shutdown by Moonbyul, and Honey by Solar. Each is a masterpiece in very different ways and I highly recommend checking them out asap.

RBW knows how to promote but they keep the girls behind just because they don't speak english. Like in most kpop groups now there is always a few members who can speak fluent English. Also I think RBW has the money but they don't want to spend behind the Mamamoo the ones who actually raised their company.

You should react to wheein last album!! She even have a duet with hwasa on her third track. This is their first duet after all these years. Also, this time this is her first full album so yes I can't wait to see your reaction!! Moonbyul and hwasa are preparing for a new album but we don't know when and solar will have a musical soon named "Notre dame de Paris" playing the role of Esmerelda.

I was able to see the mamamoo my con world tour. I legit cried. They are my ult girl group. The show wasn’t as a large of a spectacle as a BTS show but it was still just as perfect

I got to know mamamoo in 2020 through egotistic (well I heard maria by hwasa and didn't think she would be in a group, and the one day egotistic got recommended to me). Then I heard starry night and hip and I never looked back.

I don't usually comment on reaction videos, but I'd like to express my thoughts here. It's mainly because of how their company handled their promotions, ESPECIALLY in the international aspect. One can even say that they've been underestimating Mamamoo's success back then. I vaguely remember their albums being sold out for a while especially during the HIP and AYA era. Many moomoos in twt were complaining that they couldn't order because it kept showing 'Sold out' for a while. There were a lot of times where many of their shorts that should've been posted on Tiktok but weren't, and a lot more complaints (moomoos were begging them to post on tiktok back then and kmoomoos even mentioned it during the fansign). Many moos were guessing that the My Con: Tour could've been rushed too (and/or rbw underestimating them again) because the venues were so small compared to the size of their fandom. I'd say, this is just the tip of the iceberg because I haven't been as active as I was.

Are they? As long they are topping charts in south korea and famous there then they are not underrated. Just cause they don’t do it in a international scales like bts or blackpink, twice doesn’t mean they underrated… Maybe as a global aspect but in south korea they are really famous. Almost all kpop groups knows and respect them. They had won many awards before and each member has a successful career. I would say dream catcher is more underrated. Very talented but took over 5 years just to win a music show awards!!

I loved watching this with you! Mamamoo are such a strong and special group. And I'd definitely love to see you react to Moonbyul's Shutdown feat. Seori, it's so good and the fact that it so obviously depicts a sapphic love (especially in the lyrics) but in a way that does not feel at all like it's being done for shock value or the male gaze... It really surprised me in the absolute best way.

Right before COVID, they were supposed to go to Coachella but it was cancelled(obviously) and with the hiatus through it it caused their popularity and hype to be killed and it ruined their success train and their opportunity to go global really sad for them but at least their still mamamoo, they did it once they can do it again

First of all, Mamamoo is my ult female group and I too would say they were underrated However, something another reactor said me realize that they aren't. Mamamoo has won many awards, they are praised by so many professionals in the industry, netizens praise and respect them as well, and their mv's get millions of view (many not like others but still.) They are under appreciated not underrated.

I think it's just the west who hasn't heard enough of them. I would say it's only the lack of English language songs that keeps them off of western radio stations. BUT the top K-pop groups are only recently getting play in the west. The OVERWHELMING talent can NOT be ignored forever.
