WOW.. I am a novice mechanic, and a defender TD5 owner (02).. these things you talk about were always a strange science to me, but not any more, and that is down to this well made and informative video.. its now very easy to understand the workings of this system.. and it is in laymans terms.... I am so glad I found your channel, I have watched the "rear clunking" video and fixed it myself thanks to that video.. I will save hundreds of pounds now, and will learn more and more as I watch all your videos... Keep up the good work, I realise it must be a lot of work to make these, and of course the time to edit them... so THANK YOU.

Amazing video - so clear ! What happens with the increased combustion in the engine ? would this not spin the turbo even more and force more clean air into the engine and cause an overheating issue ? Or blow a head gasket ? I'm looking to do this EGR blank and add a bigger intercooler to the vehicle - I operate in hot african climates so would like the engine to run nice and clean. Also have a 2002 td5 defender

Is part 2 still in the making? I've no diagnostic faults, but belting black smoke going up hills when my engine in cold. Lack of power, takes a moment or two for acceleration to kick in, and shuddery going up hills in 5th gear. I don't know how to test the egr or clean it. Can you help?
@D3Sshooter5 жыл бұрын
This seems to be an issue of not having enough air in the mixture, that is why you have black smoke. Black smoke is the result of unburned fuel, in other words not enough air in the mix... best is a14 to 1 ratio, however If you run leaner (more air) then you will get more power but also higher temps and NOX. It might be that your EGR valve is stuck open, or your turbo waste valve is open. I still need to make that part 2. But in essence you could remove the vacuum from it, so it stays closed. That would be on the condition that the EGR is not stuck open or badly closes. I will see if I can get a video on it sooner. Did you read the manifold pressure ? You can do so using the diganostics tool attached to the OBD2 whole driving and check what happens with MAP value and Manifold temp...

Do You think it would be impossible to pass an MOT in Belgium with a blanked EGR and a straight through exhaust without the catalytic converter? Thanks for Your help to all Defender and TD5 owners!!

Herbert Masing as far as i am aware it should not be an issue. Just poor the fuel enhancer in the diesel before you go

My TD5 is giving out black smoke when I raise the engine. When its idle it doesn't show any black smoke but when I accelerate then I see smoke. I am just going through your videos to understand my problem and to do a proper diagnosis. Milage is 55000.

Damien Rodrigo black smoke is typical for unburned diesel. And can be caused by many different sources. Not enough oxygen due to a slow turbo and or low pressure. Check the hoses - turbo-intercooler and inlet. Check that the egr valve is closed. Just remove vacuum hose on the egr valve and try again, if that makes no difference measure the MAF and MAP voltages. I assume that you do not have faulty or replaced injectors for which the unique code is not enterd in the ECU. Try to read out the ecu error code. That will tell you a lot of the sensors. Are you sure its black smoke and not blue. Blue indicates burning oil , that would be bad. Try also injector cleaner in the fuel. Do you also have a loss of power ? It could be many things and try some of the tips in my different vi

I will have to invest some time to diagnose this properly. I will follow the steps given by you and will get back to you. Your videos are extremely helpful since I can't find a proper person with good knowledge of this subject matter in my country. Thank You.

D3Sshooter okay I checked it today. There is no EGR valve in my one. Someone has removed it and the opening in the exhaust manifold is also closed and welded. There was a extremely tiny play in the turbo chra.
