Landscape Painting Demo - Blue Country View

In this lesson we’ll explore an old country road through the European countryside together and learn how to paint the warm hazy late-day light of golden hour. As Alain demonstrates this pastel painting, he’ll also share how to create a sense of place that evokes feelings of warmth and nostalgia in the viewer. Finally, you’ll learn how a cool color underpainting can be applied under the warm afternoon light to create an exciting color contrast in soft pastel.

OMG! I did not say that I disliked the shirt, I did say and I still say it is distracting, I have trouble focusing on the painting and the mark making, as the shirt is just so busy. I might be the only person to be distracted but I really like Alain’s videos and appreciate his artwork, I only want success for him and his channel. If I had trouble focusing I want him to be aware and judge the video on performance and comments. I have a similar shirt but I would not wear it on camera, unless I am trying to distract my viewers! So sorry if this went to a bad place, I meant no disrespect or dissatisfaction with the Art nor Artist!

My favourite underpainting colour is a deep purple called eggplant by Ludwig. I was wondering how you determined the warm and cooler shadow colours in this piece.

Dsl Art that is a lovely color, so very dark. My color choices are built off the value structure then I respond to the scene and tend to pull them in the direction of my liking. Orange/gold warms with blue/violet cools here. Have fun painting!

Alain, thank you for sharing another pastel demo. It looks like you repainted your studio in the last month, going from around a 50% grey (value 5 or 6) to around 90% grey (value 2)? Now that the walls are darker, do you like it, or, the lighter grey? I was thinking of repainting my studio (spare bedroom) from white walls to about 60% grey walls (thought I would leave the ceiling white) and wondered how you like the dark grey walls?

KaBluey59 good catch, you are right. I painted one wall for my video backdrop as well as behind my easel and I love it. It makes the videos much clearer and more focused. It’s a lovely color behind the easel too. Have fun painting!

Museum glass over the pastel is my practice. You cant yet actually seal a pastel. I occasionally use Lascaux Fixativ

Sandra Dodson thank you very much for the kind words. The study is done on tan toned paper with Tombow markers in shades of gray and a white hard pastel for highlights. I have been enjoying the markers lately. They are very graphic and strong.

Just fabulous but it was hard to see details with painting small, and camera so far in back of you. I screen shot it at end and zoomed in but would sure liked to have seen more clearly where you put the marks on the buildings and road. Maybe it was because viewing with iPhone🤷🏼‍♀️.
