In this video, I discover my landscape photography happy place. Blackppol is a place I am comfortable photographing time and time again!
Last week I ventured out to create a vlog. It's the first video I have made in more than three weeks. The reason why I hadn't created a video for this length of time, was that the wife and I were recently struck down by the dreaded lergy!
We weren't particularly ill, but we spent most of the first week in bed. Covid made us both incapacitated. Whilst we were a lot more mobile on week two, we were both constantly tired and lethargic.
If this is the worst of the illness, then we both count ourselves lucky!
The reason I discovered what I think is my happy place, was due to my lethargic state. I didn't want to venture too far from home but I wanted to blow off the cobwebs and photograph an area I knew I would be able to capture fairly decent images with relative ease! Blackpool was the place of choice.
It's an area I have photographed many times. It's roughly an hour's drive from my home, and apart from the tide heights and times, there aren't really any other restrictions.
It was only whilst creating this video did I think that I can now call this area my happy place!
The question is, do you also have an area you could call your happy place?

I grew up in a resort town on the coast of southern New Jersey state, USA. One of my summer jobs was working on the beach cleaning crew. Three crews, each with an adult driver and dump truck and 10 or so kids to pick up trash and empty trash cans/bins. Four in the morning till noon, 6 days a week. Every day, all 3 trucks were mostly full, sometimes to overflowing. This was in the mid-1960s. Your Blackpool beach took me back to those 'good old days'. Not much has changed, eh? So glad you and your wife survived the Covid. Continue to take it easy. It can rebound. Also, so nice to have another of your videos! My wife and I both enjoy looking at the world through your lens! Cheers!

Thanks Gary! I loved all the images from Blackpool, but preferred the colour to the b&w on this occasion. It’s great to have a happy place. Watching Gardener’s World on Britbox, it seems that place for many is their garden, and that became especially true during lockdowns. For me, it’s the Bashakill Wetlands in upstate New York. We lived upstate for 13 months from when the pandemic started and it was a 15 mile drive from the house. Now we’re back in the city, it’s a 75 mile drive, so I don’t get there so often. It’s my happy place because it was the first place I went to after the first lockdown in 2020, in mid-May. It wasn’t because of the photographs I came away with - there were a couple of ok ones, but just being out in nature after two months of being housebound, except for me going to do curbside pickups of groceries. I had never been before and I was astonished at what a pristine wetland it was, and I did not see a single piece of litter. I just loved being there and listening to nature. I stopped and stood still for about five minutes with my eyes closed and all I could hear was birdsong and chipmunks rustling in the undergrowth and no sounds made by people or machines. I’ve been a few times since and come away with one or two nice photographs. I’m glad you and your wife have recovered from Covid. I’ve somehow avoided it even though everyone else at home had it in June. Stay well.

Hi Gary - great to see you back in the throw we've missed you. I was sorry to learn that you & Paula have had the dreaded Covid but good that you are both now on the mend. I Enjoyed the video - but couldn't help but notice that magical rub off motivation and enthusiasm you always bring was a little in short supply (for obvious reasons!!). Good on ya Gary - you didn't have to make this video - but typical you - when needs must Devil Drives. Hope both you and Paula are back to 101% good health and fitness asap.

Nice images Gary and was nodding the head at your comments about the rubbish. The mentality of people who think it is acceptable to just leave their crap behind for others to pick up really irks me as they have made an effort to take to the place, so it wont take much effort to deposit it in a bin that will be less than a few hundred metres away from them.

Nice to see you back out there after your bout of illness, I think the sunrise is definitely the picture of the day my friend. You are right, I think we all have that happy plaice that gives us a few image rewards each visit. I have to say i am a little greedy & have 2 Happy Places, these Being Whitby & also the Lake District, both offer different results, landscapes & seascapes & i always feel relaxed in my photography when i am at either. I am looking forwards to more of your videos, they have & continue to be very helpful but also very relaxing to watch

I mainly shoot street photography but want to get into land/seascapes more and more but after a weeks holiday on Anglesey I really need more and more practice once I seen the photos I got. We go to Lytham regularly with the dog as it’s only about 40-45 miles from us but I only get a few handheld shots really so I’m going to be going around the Fylde Coast more on my own, just me and my camera s I can concentrate on my photography, Friday seems the best day time wise as high tide is around 11am but I need to check the weather too. I’ll definitely be going to Blackpool more for these kind of shots, both sunrise and sunset but also Clevelys too as it’s been a few years since I shot Marys Shell, the ogre etc. Great video Gary, I do love the way they are quite educational without you trying for that.

Blackpool will always be my happy place, it was mum and dads too! they honeymooned there, five years later my dad did his army training there and then off to war, mum and me was lucky, he came back! when asked about the war he simply said he had a job to do! After travelling to all the places I ever wanted to go to Blackpool is still my happy place, it has everything that I need, including Ma Kellys! and decent fish n chips...I loved seeing your early morning pictures of the pier, I have only done sunsets, I was sorry to learn that you have not been well. Thank you Gary. I'm glad you made it through. You chose a good title. I had a happy place of my own. When I had a heart attack in 2014 at the age of 48. It was followed with anxiety and insomnia. So I bought a season pass for a botanic garden 30 minutes from home. I was going there weekly to take pictures of flowers. New ones emerged regularly, so it was fascinating and very relaxing! By the way Gary, do you have a video where you explain how you edit your pictures, the horizon, etc.? It's maybe a professional secret, so I understand if you prefer keep it to yourself. Also Gary, I came back from Prince Edward Island, Canada. I made my first real long exposure pictures. Not perfect, but I'm happy with them. Thank you for sharing your experience!

❤️❤️ love your work and theses images, but definitely not my happy place, Blackpool is where the mother in-law lives 🤣.... But my current happy place is currently quite literally the polar opposite, South Shields, but to be honest the entirety of the north east coast... From north Berwick down to probably Middlesbrough, and many more places from there down to explore. I'm lucky in a delivery job in the north east where I take every opportunity to explore ( obviously after work 😉🤫😊) camera always next to me but more often than not beautiful scenery can't quite make an image.... Want to do more long exposure work but i keep missing tide.... Hope you are well after the lurrgy... Neither me or Mrs at full strength to battle lake District after the Covid, she's now had it 3 times and myself twice... And both fully vaccinated 🤯. But like you said many have suffered worse so my blessings are with them. Take care ❤️

The first vlog I watched with you (many moons ago) was in Blackpool Gary you've still got it! Glad you're rid off the covid. I had it just as I was on my easter holiday, felt pretty rough for a couple of days and tired for few afterwards...just in time for the return to work!! I share your grief with regards to litter. I grew up with all those "public information films" and the Keep Britain Tidy campaign in the 70s plus I had a proper upbringing. I can assure you it's not confined to Blackpool or the UK. Good to see you back!

It's great to see a set of images of Blackpool. I've often said about Blackpool that it has a great beach and costline, sadly spoiled by the tatty buildings and some of the people who frequent it. Your long exposure images really show the best of the seaside and the calm that can be found there, even when the place has been busy with visitors. Good to know it's your happy place and that you have recovered from the virus.

Great Inspiration!! I missed your videos and glad to see you recovered. I love your style! I do want to know if you offer an online editing course. If so, how do I access the link to register? Keep these wonderful vlogs going!

Always worth capturing some fine art shots Gary and if that means being in your “happy place” all the better. I have just returned from a wonderful week on Orkney and like yourself just had my first week back with 4 days of positive tests 😡 I didn’t pick it up on Orkney, I had to wait until I got back and fairly sure I came down with it from taking my father to his doctors (how ironic is that) anyway I have only had it mildly and am now negative. Whilst on Orkney I attempted my very first “fine art” minimalist image of a shipwreck on a beach at Inganess after taking on board all of your fabulous advice and I must say I am very pleased with it and I think it has got me hooked, my only problem is I am about as landlocked as one could be living in the Midlands and finding suitable subjects is difficult. Glad you and the wife are over it as I am with no major problems and thank you very much for all of your advice and tips 👌

Sorry to hear you and your dear mrs got this bloody Corona virus, Gary. I wish you a speedy recovery. I got the dreaded Delta variety in July 2021 and the first two days were absolutely horrible. I have not recovered 100% yet, and still suffer bouts of total lethargy, depression and shortness of breath. My advice is to keep positive, avoid chores like work and stress, and build your strength back by doing things that you love and give you pleasure. The photographs you showed were absolutely beautiful, and you don't hear me say that very often. BTW the music reminded me of one my most favourite movies, The Blade Runner, all the better. Take care and be calm and happy. The last three years have been awful and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

I always like the transitions from color to black and white - those really show interesting elements in both styles. Glad to hear you and your wife are doing better. Cheers!

I am glad to hear that you and Mrs. G are feeling better. Such an awful thing. So many I know have been hit with it. Loved the sunrise image in colour. I think the colour really gives to the feel of sunrise.

I look out for you when I'm out in Blackpool. I live ten minutes away. Some of my happy places are not far away either. Have you ever been to Skippool Creek near Poulton-le-Fylde and alternatively Wardley Creek near Hambleton, which is on the other side of the river. A walk from Wardley Creek along the river path back to Shard Bridge might give you some opportunities for fine art shots. If that doesn't work you might try getting the wrecks further down river a Fleetwood, approached via Fleetwood Country Park.

Congratulations on earning your plague badge. Glad to see that you made it through. I actually had it earlier this year, found out after spending a few hours filming the first video for my channel. Awesome hearing and seeing some of your thought process. I thoroughly enjoy your videos.
