Good to see you back dude. Lost the foot off my gitzo, kept meaning to put some loctite on them but shouldn't really of had to for a six hundred quid or so tripod... anyway, almost over it. Welcome to the D850 side, you'll love the flip out screen once you start remembering it's there... came from the D810, it takes a while! Enjoy and get out there!

I switched from Manfrotto to Benro because the snap lock legs on the Manfrotto kept loosening and began to sag!! The Benro is a twist lock system and I love it.

Paul, I also wanted a well designed ball head that is light, strong and has a pano feature without too much weight. I spent a lot time searching and found a wonderful product, the Acratech GP-ss Ballhead. The head is reversed for panos. It's wonderfully smooth and not as heavy as the usual brand names such as RRS, etc. Very happy with it. Sometimes it's sweet to find a product that is not one of the usual 'suspects'.

I'm glad that you and other popular KZbinrs are beginning to talk frankly about the elephant in the room that is high megapixel cameras and image viewing distance. There are definitely advantages to having high megapixel sensors at your disposal, but print resolution really isn't much of one.

Couldn't agree more Paul, I bought a Gitzo 3541L about 7 years ago and I have had issues with it. For example I was on a workshop in Assynt Nov 2017 with 4 other students, 3 of them had Manfrotto's and the other one was a Sirui, as far as I noticed I was the only one who had any problem with their tripod, no matter how tight I tried to tighten the twist locks, they frequently gave way and would start to slide. Given the fact that I would strip it down and clean it as recommended on a regular basis it still let me down, very disappointing considering it cost me over £600.I also lost one of the feet about 6 weeks after I bought it. In April this year I bought a Benro TAD38C tripod with flip locks from Wilkinson Cameras, it and it only cost me £199 delivered and I am very happy with it.

Loved this and the c64! Have to admit I struggle with tripods, I invested in a carbon fibre Manfrotto which weighed a bloomin ton, sold it and now I have a £15 aluminium one off Amazon with detachable plastic plate and it is as light as a feather and tough as old boots. Its solid and doesn't jiggle in the wind on long exposures. These days I just see them as 3 points of contact that need to have good enough adjustment and lock down tight 👍

I've had the older version of the Mountaineer, the GT2531, for nine years with no issues at all. A great tripod that has been all over the country. I just wonder if their quality has slipped. I have read where the new collars are a little harder to turn. I will say that there are a lot more options today than there was ten years ago. I also have a Feisol 3401 and love it.

Paul, I had the same problem with the unscrew/screw legs with grit and sand build up and it was a real pain in having to take them apart and clean them as I take sea photography mostly but to combat this and it sounds and looks weird, I always take three plastic bags and attach them with elastic bands to the bases of the legs. It works and saves me a lot of time when I get home. I use this system if I`m planting the tripod in the sand.

Just come across this. Like you i did my research on tripods, in fact i think i spent a good 3 or 4 months, maybe longer researching tripods. It got narrowed down to Gitzo and Feisol, i ended up going with feisol as i read about too many people with failed Gitzo tripods and hit and miss customer service from them. Feisol on the other hand had brilliant customer service, and should a part fail down the line, all parts can be bought. Plus the whole tripod is user serviceable. Being twist lock, they can be disassembled and cleaned inside. I have had my feisol 4 years now and it still works like it was new. :)

I had my first Gitzo since 2006, used it extensively, never encountered any of your problems. Had my second Gitzo (Systematic Series 3) for 3 years, used it equally extensively, not a problem in sight. I just bought my third Gitzo, a very light Traveler Series 0. ;o)). My heads are RRS BH-55 on the first tripod, an Arca Swiss Cube on the second, and the standard issue Gitzo on the third one.

Hi Paul, I would echo your thoughts on twist locks - never been a fan. I have always found the snap locks much more user friendly so my Manfrotto legs suit me. I found them much more usable when adjusting the deployed legs on uneven ground. But I bet that you'll get just as many reply's saying twist locks are better! I also think that the camera (generally) makes little difference on the whole - it's what you do with it that counts. Looking forward to your next vlog. Cheers.

So... How does Lightroom run on the C64? I feel the same way as you about the twist locks. I have them on a small Benro tripod that I use for the video camera and I'm forever seeing the tripod start to sink over because I haven't locked one of the legs off tightly. My main tripod is a Manfrotto so doesn't have that problem. I may be wrong but I think all of the Benro legs are twist lock so that may not be the best choice for you. Paul, I have two Benro carbon fibre tripods, one is a big super steady beast and the other is the lighter Travel Angel. I am VERY happy with both. I have always had Monfroto heads but I have been getting used to the Benro ball head with an L bracket from SRB. I do prefer the Manfrotto geared head but the ball head is lighter on my old back! I am shooting with an old D600 and have A3+ prints on the wall. I also have a 3 foot wide pano crop taken with a D90 and I don't see a huge difference. I did my LRPS with the cropped sensor camera. Do I regret the step up? No, there are advantages with the full frame but I 100% agree with you in that the gear is secondary to the light, the natural world, the composition and being in the right place at the right time; gear is easy in comparison! Did I miss the 'why I have not been vlogging' bit? Don't worry if it is too difficult Paul. Look after yourself.

Love the video Paul. As one of the first UK owners of a Commodore PET computer I really wanted the 64, but got sidetracked by career moves and dislocation. Now it would just be useless, which sort of agrees with your comment about megapixels. Manufacturers keep pushing for more, but in reality almost few of us need it, because my 4k 55" TV screen is about as big as I'm ever going to display my images. Which is why the MFT system is really good enough for most people, although the dynamic range is a bit short of the Canon 5DSr (50 mpx🙄😏😎), I formerly owned and the Sony A7r3 I now have. But some of my best images this year were taken with the Panasonic G9. So, I'm glad you're going to vlog some more, and it is good to hear someone who can form their own opinions rather than spout the usual doublespeak about kit.

I feel your pain regarding those twist lock legs Paul. I bought a carbon fibre Benro and it’s absolutely superb, but, those twist locks are a real pain when you want adjust the legs to suit uneven ground. Especially because I’ve convinced myself it’s good practice to adjust the lower (thinner) sections closer to the ground. That was always so much easier and quicker to do on my Manfrotto tripod. Mild rant over 🙂

I'm actually thinking about getting an Gitzo (I'm 6'3" which limits the selection), but seeing that the rubber has come off makes me a bit hesitant... Did you contact Gitzo about the rubber which came off? On a side note, 15 years ago everyone was told to get legs which was locked with the twist, as the leavers used by vendors like Manfrotto would break off in cold weather, or you would get your fingers pinched. Now suddenly everyone wants the leavers again. Maybe the best would be a woody from Berlebach ;-)

Casper Pedersen hi Casper no I didn’t contact gitzo as my experience with manufacturers only has been poor when contacting customer service . I put it down to experience and will order a new one . The bullhead was used for 6 months before it failed. Clip locks vs twist lock is a personal thing but I prefer clip lock 😃👍. I think the price that they charge means that the quality should be exceptional but it’s not my experience 😃👍

Hi Paul. Great to see you tackling such a subjective issue in your usual honest way. You've timed it bang on for me as I'm upgrading my tripod soon. I've got a Manfrotto 055 carbon but the clips are driving me mad - they need constant maintenance (I do a lot of seascapes). I've already ditched the Manfrotto ballhead in favour of a Benro G3 which I'm really pleased with. I'm definitely considering the Benro Mach 3 as it's half the price of a similar Gitzo. In terms of cameras, I'm a lifelong Nikon user but am really tempted by the Sony Alpha range which looks fantastic. Then again, a D850 looks perfect for me. What a great problem to have !! Great video Paul. Many thanks for sharing. P.S. the new office looks great!

Good stuff mate. As you say doesn't matter the camera you use as you can get good images with anything I feel and my A6300 produced some lovely stuff. Got the D810 recently and for me was the ergonomics and use in cold weather. That's where the Sony was starting to be a faff, and liked the feel of the larger body especially when holding it with thick gloves on. Ohh err misses sounds bad but I think you know what I am trying to say. Love the keyboard and blast from the past and miss my speccy. Atb Mate.

Nice honest take on equipment Paul, I think mega pixels are overrated! I have a print on the wall a meter long taken on my old canon 400D and it looks super (comment from visitors not only me:) I had an image from my 700D printed 2.5m long for an office, as you say to see the picture that size you have to stand back and from a few feet away you don't see any issues. The Benro kit looks good. I use a Manfrotto 055 carbon fibre and ballhead, I spent a lot of time deliberating over what to get, I can't remember what pushed me in that direction at the time but it seems to work fine after I think 4 years now. it probably doesn't get enough use!! I almost set on getting a second tripod and head as I've started messing around with timelapses and super wide nigh sky panorama's, so like the idea of leaving a camera running for the TL whilst doing my main shots. I'll take a look at Benro for the new kit. Love the Commodore! I hope that drives your Mac:) All the best bud!

We're our own worst critics. You're as skilled as any of the photographers that I follow on KZbin and believe me that's quite a few. Glad you invested in the best 👍. Regarding equipment I just turned 60 2 weeks ago and feel that I should upgrade from my D7200 (great camera bye the way). However in photography terms don't think it would improve said. I also have a mf3 gx7 with a number of lenses and I get good results from it plus it's so light and convenient for travel. Regarding printing, it's a bone of contention with my wife that I never print anything - used to be better with cheeper gear 😂. Sorry for the rant Paul.

Hi Eltin. It's not a rant , your thought process is spot on. It's a cliche as i have a good set up but it's not about the gear. I think i jut try to get across that getting out and shooting is the key. Don't be put off thinking you need a huge mega pixel camera.

Alright mate, funny you should make a video about benro tripods, I don’t know if you have seen his vlogs before but Ben Fewtrell just made a video about travel tripods and the benro was the one to get...in his opinion of course (not sponsored either) . Can’t say I had heard of them before but that’s now 2 great photographers saying how good the products are, I might just have to look in them. Manfrotto are out of my price range so any alternative is welcomed. I seriously need to upgrade my gear so this is something I can look at. Tripod, lenses, filters are needed. I will stick with the body I have as it’s 24Mp but with the glass I have , it brings it down to approximately 9Mp.

Enjoyed your video Paul but don't share your views on Gitzo. I have really good experience of their tripods...solid as a rock and love the twist lock system. I was advised not to buy their ball heads as they are prone to seizure if dirt or sand get inside the ball head because they are not a sealed head. I matched my Gitzo legs to an Acratech ball head which is a fantastic sealed unit. One question....is that really your working keyboard? It looks like something out of a 1970's typing pool 🤣!

I have a Manfrotto 055XProB. It's heavy, it's strong, one of the legs binds sometimes and they slip when not tightened properly. It has clip locks. I have a 3LT, Jack. It's light, it's strong, one of the legs binds sometimes, and they slip sometimes when not tightened properly. It's twist-lock. I use the 3LT head that came with the tripod. I had the same concerns levelling the camera, I bought an iShoot panning gadget. It's very cheap, looks dodgy, but has never failed. It fits into an Arca Swiss clamp, has an Arca Swiss clamp on top for a camera. Recently, I've been using a video head on the Manfrotto, MVH500AH I think. There are two versions, mine mounts to a regular tripod head. It's excellent for panning left and right, up and down, but doesn't level sideways. For that, I have a Sunwayfoto levelling base, similar to yours.

I used a Manfrotto 055 tripod with a 3 way pan and tilt head and it was great but then someone suggested a Sirui T-2004X tripod and a ball head mount. Cut a long story short i bought it BUT it also has twist locks on the legs and to be honest I'm not very keen on them either but hey ho. How ever i now use both tripods but i only ever use the ball mount as it is so much easier then Flaffing about with 3 locks on my old Manfrotto pan tilt head. However there are times when i wish i still had it especially if i use a long or heavy lens such as a 100m - 400m. Great looking keyboard BTW.

I have a Manfrotto 055 with the 3047 3 way head. It clocks in at 8.5 pounds. I'm considering the acquisition of a Benro tripod and leveling head. I've tried working with a ball head but am missing the 3047 functions. Benro makes a geared head which allows dialing in one's composition on three axes and is reputedly very steady with long lenses.

Good video but I don't agree with all of it. The issue with the twist locks is a personal thing, I used to use Manfrotto flip locks and hated them. Moving to the Gitzo twist locks was so much better imo and I could never go back to the flip lock (which btw will still need maintenance otherwise they will start to become very hard to use). With reference to the Gitzo ball head that you had, I do agree with that... and as it happens so do Gitzo. I spoke to them about it and the feedback they had was people loved their tripods but would buy a different head, usually a RRS. With that in mind they scrapped the head design that you had a released new ones. The new ones are very good, and the best I have tried. The Benro are OK for the price but I found it very inconsistent in use with regards to friction etc so quite frustrating.

I’ve still got a Manfrotto 055 with the tap system, and I still use it with my pan and tilt head with my Bronica, it must be over 20 years old. The cast iron on a couple of the tap brackets has snapped and it’s taped up with insulation tape because I can’t find two of the larger sized brackets. I use it because my newer one is set up for Arca Swiss and I haven’t found a L bracket for the ERTSi. Because I always use a mobility scooter or the car I can still use the aluminium Manfrottos, the 190 and 055 (though it’s now a newer one) and get the stability the weight gives me. Benro's reputation is getting better and better and I've even heard their filters are excellent. Twelve hours after originally writing this I remember I’ve been using a Benro sidekicker gimbal head for years. I shoot my landscapes on my 5DIII, I only bought it because the tethering port died in my 5DII and in truth I still prefer the latter. I have never outgrown a camera (well maybe my Instamatic 50), I’m honestly not that good, so I only buy now when I wear kit out. If I want big images I can use my Bronica. Great video Paul, but you forgot to say where you’ve been. As long as you’re in good fettle that’s all that matters.
