Sometime's the urge to take a photo is overwhelming. No matter what the weather there may still be an opportunity to come away with great images.
In this Vlog shot on bonfire night we took a ride to Saltburn on the North East coast. With high tide, high winds and lots of rain it was always going to be a challenge. Here's how we did. Shot entirely with the GOPRO Hero 5!
Apologies in advance for the audio in many parts of this but the GoPro Hero 5 mics were on their limit with this kind of wind. I hadn't intended to film a Vlog so didn't have full equipment with me.
Don't forget to subscribe! Thanks for watching

gary forsyth thanks very much. totally agree that there are always photos to be taken and hopefully we inspire people to get outdoors whatever the weather. As long as you remain safe of course! I'm sure I will have more bad weather videos coming over the winter lol

Hi David. She is indeed. We are a team with everything we do in life from photography, through to business, through to just being a family. I'm exceptionally lucky to have her and appreciate everything she does for me. Hopefully I'm as supportive of her as she is of me. She will be appearing regularly in future videos too lol.

Thanks Jeremy! It's not that bad compared to being up in the mountains in winter but caught me slightly off guard lol. Glad you enjoyed it and glad you enjoy some rough weather photography too. I'll hopefully get some more hardcore videos up this winter so feel free to check back or subscribe. Keep shooting and it would be great to see some of your images! :-)

I think I'm a frustrated storm chaser, I love that kind of weather. You got some great shots there, particularly liked the first black and white shot on the pier with the couple. Although putting your bag on your tripod may have helped a little with the wind, I'm not sure many photographers would risk their kit in that weather as looked strong enough to blow it about banging into the tripod etc. and I don't think I would have tested it to see to what degree they are waterproofed. Great video.

Hi Mark, thanks for the kind words! Attaching the bag to the tripod is a common way to try to stabilise a tripod but depending on the size and shape of the bag it can be a little bit of a problem simply because it can start to act like a sail. I was using the largest Tamrac Expedition on that particular day and by the time you have the legs spread wide on the tripod you end up with the bag on the ground regardless ... or of course trailing in the surf lol - which is never a good idea :-) There are two approaches really in that weather ... either buy the heaviest tripod you can if you are doing short distances, or if you have heavy professional lenses and bodies go for a tripod with the thinnest profile legs which is usually carbon fibre. They then present the least wind resistance and you can use your body to shield the camera and lens which is the area at the zenith that will usually present the most wind resistance. I was using a 5D Mark 3 with the 24-70mm F.28 L and 17-40mm and have used them in much worse conditions and found them bulletproof. I do keep a cloth in the car and wipe saltwater off straight after though and then give it a good clean at home post shoot. I dry the tripods off and periodically strip them down and fully clean them mainly to remove sand particles. I think thats just generally sensible maintenance though :-)

Enjoyed the video. Just found your channel today and I dig your style of shooting. Bad weather photography has always been my favorite type of photography. Snow, rain, wind, all 3..lol..it don't matter. Though coming from a guy that still shoots film, it is a bit tricky to keep the weather on the outside of your equipment..lol Anyways keep the videos coming!

Hi Charles thanks for the comment and kind words. Definitely my favourite type of weather and in fact another bad weather video has been uploaded today ... with it still being winter I should have a few more opportunities to indulge my love of shooting in wind and rain :-)

DanPearsonPhoto Just finished watching it. Amazing what images can be found by braving the elements, trusting your skills and gear and just get out and shoot, ever know what you may come away with. Keep up the great work and happy shooting.

Great vlog and great location!! I've been standing at a pier today here in Holland, with similar weather conditions. But there was one difference: the wind direction! In the Netherlands we have no cliffs and all that so slightly less spectacular result ... And I do recognize the hassle of traveling to a location, weather conditions and all the additional problems! Keep up the good work! grtz, Jerome.

Great video Dan, Im VERY new to all this having just started to get into photography after the other half bought me a Canon EOS 450D. I've been watching various youtube videos to try and get to grips with it and learn the basics. I've just stumbled across you after finding your photography show video.I'm loving your style of photography and vlogging will definetly be trying to keep up with your exploits, especially since I'm yorkshire based so will get some good ideas of locations from where youve been :) Keep up the brilliant work and look forward to seeing many videos in the future. Oh and hat off to your other half for her patience in waiting around while you make these great videos.

I think your videos are ok Dan but I don't think you should be making them when driving. Photography is my hobby but I drive a HGV for a living and I do see a lot of accidents on my travels and it only takes a moment for things to go wrong. And you do seem take your wife and baby along on these trips so just think about it and all stay safe mate.

Hi Larry. Thanks for the comments. It is certainly an interesting point. Over the years that I've been involved in production we have often set systems up to film in cars, vans and trucks. It isn't illegal providing that the driver isn't operating the equipment and is actually a set up regularly seen on shows such as Police Interceptors, Top Gear, The Grand Tour, Catfish etc. A risk assessment is usually made and the cameras are either left on and recording or are operated remotely. We shoot with suction cups and generally use GoPro cameras which are operated via remote by my other half, who also controls any sound recording equipment. I drive around 50,000 miles per year though and agree fully that you see your fair share of accidents. We always try to film away from the vehicles but that isn't always possible. When you see me facing the camera, 99% of the time this is me actually checking the rear view mirror ... we located the main camera and mic next to the mirror so that it isn't a distraction and doesn't interfere with line of sight or driving. I try where possible to film using a Land Rover Discovery too which has excellent visibility all round. My ramblings on camera are generally no different to the conversations that I would be having with my other half regardless. That said it's a great point and I'll certainly take a look at if we can film more of these sections outside of the car to further reduce any perceived risks :-)

I know it's not illegal but I thought it was something I should mention as I use a bluetooth kit in the lorry at times and even that can be distracting. And as you also do quite a bit of driving you can understand where I'm coming from and there is a lot more vehicles on the road and unfortunately a lot more bad drivers to look out for. I am just starting to look through your videos and I found the Eggborough power station one interesting as I do go in and of there quite often but I've never looked at it from a photographic point of view before but I have taken a night shot of Ferry Bridge power Station with light trails from the A1 there is a good spot above the A1 on Grovehall Ln behind the Wandahome caravan sales place. And I will be watching more of your videos so stay safe and maybe I will bump into you one day Lol

Larry Herbert it is definitely a shame that Ferrybridge is now closed down and there will be no more drama and smoke coming from those cooling towers at it that's always been a favourite location of mine and one that I've loved to shoot many times over the years. I tried to get some more images just before it's East operating however missed it by around the week but have ended up shooting some more drone footage down there which looks promising so far.
