My wife Becki and I discovered your channel and really admire your great photography and appreciate the way you present yourself on the channel. We would like to provide some support but I can't find you on Patreon. We support several good channels like yours and want to add you as well. How can we send you some support?

Hi John, I'd first like to thank you and your wife Becki very much for being so generous in even considering to support me and the work I do here. Your feedback is very kind and I'm just so glad that you enjoy the channel and the videos I create. I've never considered getting a Patreon account, but your comment prompted me to investigate what's involved. I've created my account here www.patreon.com/andrewmarr however I haven't added any rewards yet. I'd love your help with this, in your experience on Patreon, what have you seen as good rewards that people have offered?

Hello Andrew, I received notice of your reply and immediately went to Patreon to provide you with $20 per month to support your good work! I encourage all who read this in joining Becki and I in supporting Andrew. You can make your pledge smaller or higher depending on your circumstances, but please do some amount to help.

John Johnston it really don't look as if he needs support. Just looking at the truck and the full frame camera, along with the lens and Lee filter system I think he's doing quite well. If i could afford to be as generous as you and your wife I would give the money to charity with people that aren't as fortunate. But it's your money and I'm sure he appreciates your money.

Hi Andrew, this is the first You Tube video of yours I came across a few months ago. I was surprised at the seemingly mundane location you chose for a sunset shot, but I kept watching to see how it turned out. The end results were nothing short of amazing. After watching your video, I now have a subscription to Lightroom. I've been using it to touch up some of my Travel photography shots. I'll be retiring in a few months and will have lots of time to have a go at Landscape Photography. Your vids are truely inspirational, keep up the good work.

Hi Andrew, great video! I have a similar approach, when it comes to white balance I use a qpcard to neutralise the colours. I agree using the individual saturation colours is the better way to go, I particularly like to use the targeted adjustment feature to change specific colours.

Hi Andrew. It is a really good video and helped me quite a lot. Can I ask from your experience why you used aperture of f9 in this composition? Occasionally, I see that when we have foreground as you have the rocks, we may use f11/f16 in order to get everything sharp, and when we don't have foreground interst we may use like f8. Thank you very much and please continue with your great work :)

Hi At 18:30 you add a graduated filter to lighten the rock but you left the default exposure (by not clicking New) of -0.40 - a bit of a contradiction. Nice shot and video nonetheless.
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 8 жыл бұрын
Nice pick up Eddy, at this stage I was trying to go through a couple of options quickly so I didn't drag out the video too long. I don't think however, that clicking 'New' would have fix the issue, new just gives me a new instance of the filter with the previous settings. I should have clicked new and then reset my filter before setting the shadows and then applied the filter. Thanks again mate, appreciate your comment! :)

Great image and nice to see your post process workflow. Is there a reason why you don't use the level tool to straighten the horizon?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for commenting. There's no technical reason why I don't use the straighten tool, it's a handy tool to have in Lightroom, but I suppose I find adjusting it manually just easier for me with the grid lines as a guide. Even if I use the straightening tool, I'd probably check it against the grid lines that only appear once you start adjusting the level manually. This is just my approach not necessarily the right one :)

Anmdrew The comments below say it all; top tutorial and a wonderful workflow through to completion. Just one question, approximately how many photographs would you have taken at this location and do you select which ones for the develop module using a star rating? Mike in Oz

G'day Mike, I looked back and counted how many shots I took for this shoot and I shot exactly 30 images (included a couple I'd bracketed). Yes, I use the star rating feature in Lightroom to select the image I prefer, thanks mate! 👍

Andrew, if you are shooting in raw for editing later, can I ask why you also shoot with JPG at the same time. Really enjoyed watching your work flow and great image too
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 7 жыл бұрын
Good question Scott, I used work on a slower computer and if I wanted to quickly flick through a set of photos I had, I found the jpgs much quicker. Also up until recently Lightroom on mobiles couldn't process RAW images, so to have a jpg of an image available to edit is handy. I've since upgraded my computer, so in the future I might change it so I just capture RAWs, but the jpgs take just a small amount of space on the card that doesn't make much difference.

Sorry Andrew. Here I had asked if you could make a video to show us how to edit and you had already made one. I guess I just needed to keep watching. Great job I love your videos they are very helpful. How do you decide where to focus? I always have a hard time determining my focus point and what aperture to use. Thanks again mate!
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 7 жыл бұрын
Haha, no worries, I glad you found them mate. I tend to focus around third of the way into the image and find something that has contrast so it easy for the camera to focus on the point. I also look for a feature that will be the main element of the image because I definitely want that in focus! Regarding aperture, start at f8 (it's the sharpest point for most lenses), move up to f10 -f14 if you need a larger Depth of Field and you have something in the immediate foreground you want in focus, go down below f8 to shorten the DoF (either to blur the background or if you don't have much to keep in focus). Hope that helps! :)

Hello! Would a 35mm 2.8 Zeiss Prime Lens work for landscape pictures? Or do I need something wider?
@Andrew_marr
@Andrew_marr 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael, depending on what sort of landscape photography you wanted to shoot. While this lens is known to be a great street photography lens, there's no doubt you'd be able to capture landscape image with it. The fact is you can shoot landscapes with any lens, just some lens will have their challenges. You might find it difficult to shoot sweeping seascape with a 35mm prime, as you'll be limited to that focal length, however, you can just take a series of shots and stitch them together in Lightroom as a panoramic image. So there's always techniques around those limitation. If that's the lens you have, I encourage you to get out there and use it, and see how you go. Hope that helps! :)

Hi Andrew, I recently found your channel and subbed half way through the first video I watched. Keep doing what your doing mate, it's awesome. Maybe you could shed some light (pun intended) :) as that's what I am about to query. I am a newbie in the photography world so I am soaking up as much info as I can along the way. I understand using filters when shooting into the sun low on the horizon, but what I am having trouble with is the trend for many photographers is to under expose the image to protect the highlights and then rely on heavy post processing to bring up the shadows. Are there no filters around that can protect the highlighted sky while allowing you to expose longer or bump up ISO a tad to get more detail in the shadows ? Also the brightness you ended up with in the shadows behind the rocks to me looked false, no false is not the right word, unnatural to real world physics maybe? ;) I mean you can see there is a bright light source in the distance so of course there will be dark shadows behind objects on the opposite side if that bright light source. Maybe it's just me, but I see so many images that have been overdone in hdr or fiddled with in editors. What happened to getting the image right in camera? Is that not possible these days with expensive digital cameras and even more expensive lenses? Don't think I am being critical of your work mate, far from it. I am just trying to get my head around the whole process.

Thank you Gian, depending on the locations, sometimes I've visit an area a couple of times before find a good location, other times I'll just be luck and it's my first there exploring and I'll stumble across a good composition. If it's a place I've never been to before, I'll sometimes use the web to see what other people have captured in the area, sites like 500px, Flickr and Google images are great for that. I tend to go out when the light is generally good and then explore the place for what I think it a good composition. Sometimes even with a bit of planning, things don't quite work out, but that's ok, it's a good excuse to get out there again for another look! :)

Thank you David, I set up the camera to shoot both JPG and RAW so that I have the option of viewing/using either format. I started doing this many years ago when some devices or software couldn't read RAW format , like the iPad when it first came out. So I would use the JPG formats of the files when quickly previewing the shots I took and then use the RAW for editing. Now that's not the case as most software can read the RAW format, however there's still the size of the file to consider. On my old computer before I had Lightroom, I would just preview the shots through the folder system of the computer and the size of the files slowed things down. The JPG files are about 10-12 MB while the RAW is about 60-70 MB. I am contemplating changing to just RAW, but that's how I've got things set up at the moment. Thanks for your comment! :)

Mate, it's my pleasure! I'm very flattered that you think my channel will grow that large. It'll be a nice problem to have, but I've got a long way to go before it's get out of hand :) I just love the supportive feel of the community and the encouragement that's being cultivated by everyone. It's not all one way either. I'm learning things all the time, so there 's much I can benefit from being engaged in the comments. Cheers!

Hi thanks for uploading. Do you compound the images together to enhance the misty effect or rather did you just end up choosing the 30sec exposure as the "final" product opposed to the one you edited in your video?
@Andrew_marr

My pleasure, glad to enjoyed it! If you look back at the video I show two images I captured. The first one was with a shorter exposure (1/2 sec), this is the one I used to demo the editing. The second image wasn't a compound or merger image, it was taken in camera with a 30 second exposure and enhanced in Lightroom. Hope that helps, thanks for your question! :)

Is that a D800? or a D600? I noticed you blocked the viewfinder and on my D610 I'm not sure I have that feature

I was using the D800 for this shoot. If the D610 does have it, simple throw a cloth over the top and block the light shining in!

This may sound ridiculous but how do people do a video showing what your doing to the image? what equipment is necessary to allow this.

Hey Dave, thanks for commenting, it's a good question! I juggle both the still and video cameras to capture the final image and the footage about the BTS. I have to also wear both hats photographer and videography, I'm still learning about video side of things, but it's a great challenge. I suppose it also needs practice. I use a Canon G7x mark ii for the video with a small tripod, I have recently purchased a lapel mic to capture better quality audio.

I'm assuming you're referring to recording what's being done in the software. There's no equipment needed other than downloading a screen recorder.

is there really a big difference between choosing F9 over the full stop F8? can we even tell? just wondering coz i see this a lot. choosing F10 over F11. are these guys just rebelling against the norm??

Good question, there is a whole technical side to photography where things like this are discussed. It's like 'how long is a piece of string?' in other words, 'how long do you want to take it?' Each lens has it's optimum f-stop, it's typical around f8 to f10, the lower you go the shorter the depth of field becomes and potentially portions of your image become out of focus, as you move closer to the higher f-stops like f20 and f22 diffraction is introduced. There is plenty of information of diffraction on the net, but basically it's a phenomenon of physics (bending light) and so occurs in every lens when then aperture is small. The result is the image is softened around areas of detail. My approach is to be mindful of things like this but don't let it dominate your photography. My approach is to focus on the experience of getting out and exploring, enjoying the environment and location and capture an image. Everything you do when you take an image is a potential compromise to it quality, like adding a polariser can benefit the image by decreasing glare however it can deteriorate the image because it another piece of glass that the light has to pass through, that might have some level of dirt on it, even after it's been cleaned. In most situations, I'd put a polariser on. Same with ND filters, potentially introducing colour casting but at the same it cutting down light in your highlighted areas. So when it comes to f-stop I generally started around f8 - f10 and adjust from there. If you want to say bring your exposure down but keep your shutter speed at a particular length of time to capture moving water, I'd push the f-stop up to f11 or higher. I think it's better that, than not capturing the water the way you wanted it and miss getting the image you were trying to create. So back to your question, while diffraction technically increases as you increase your f-stop it's really not noticeable until around f20 and even then you've got to be looking very close and typically comparing image taken at different f-stops. So the difference between f8 and f9 is negligible. When people worry about this, they've stopped focusing (no pun intended) on what I'm trying to capture in the image! Thanks again for your comment! :)
