Join me for some landscape photography of Tryfan and the Ogwen Valley in Snowdonia, North Wales.
This landscape photography outing is my take on shooting an iconic location, the mountain simply called Tryfan in the Ogwen Valley, Snowdonia. I arrive on the opposite side of the valley before sunrise and spend the entire day on location, showing you some long exposure photography techniques and also talking about hand-held landscape photography to capture the light when it's changing fast. A whole day out means I get to shoot sunrise, sunset and both golden hours in a spectacular landscape photography location.
This outing also includes one of my favourite Snowdonia off-the-beaten-track landscape photography locations, the lovely hanging valley of Cwm Lloer, under the summits of Pen Yr Ole Wen and Carnedd Dafydd. This is a great summer wild-camp location, but today I'm battling a biting wind-chill to get a long exposure image of the lake, Ffynnon Lloer.
I really appreciate you watching, and if you haven't done it already, why not subscribe now and join me next time?!
I find I’m being asked more and more often about the equipment I use. As I’ve typed up countless replies and links and lists for friends and viewers, I’ve now set it all out definitively here: dgriff.gallery/equipment/.

Hi Steve, yes it is a really nice walk and to be honest even if you don't get the camera out of the bag you always feel you get good value out of it. You know, once all this nonsense has blown through I'd really like to resurrect our arrangements to get out for a couple of hours together. Would be really nice to meet you. 😊👍

Super Vlog Griff,I must say I totally agree with you about the shot with the wall though it of Tryfan. As a club competition photographer I can just hear the judge saying the wall stops you going into the image.

Good tip on walking back with camera on a sling. I don't try handhelds very often but I should do that more. If the camera is packed away, I'm a lot less likely to go for a passing shot.
@DGriffGallery
@DGriffGallery 5 жыл бұрын
HiPhilip, yes I used to miss shots all the time so about 6 months ago I decided to see whether the inconvenience of a camera around my neck when hiking would be outweighed by the opportunities it offers. I found with a sling it's no problem at all when walking with trekking poles and I've got some great shots along the way - highly recommended. But a sling is much better than a neck strap. 😀👍

Sage advice David, have climed Tryfan many times, you never go up the same way, hand,s out the pocket,s, quite hairy in places, that was 40? yr,s ago, canni do it now, did not think of photography back then, more,s the pity.

I like to walk with the camera out as well. High ISO is a bit rough on the D7000 so I try to keep it as low as possible. I usually walk in aperture priority which puts (manual) ISO into the sub-command dial right at my thumb so I can react as the conditions change.

That's a really good tip about having ISO ready to adjust - I'll definitely steal that one! 😀👍

I always love it when a new D Griff video notification pops up. Your videos are always interesting and informative and you have a knack for editing them to just the right amount of time--never too long. The shot of Tryfan at 4:15 is my fave here, really nice. I actually visited this location last year but I only hiked up part of the way. Had I known about Ffynnon LLoer, I surely would have continued climbing. Next time!

Great tip about using spikes. They’re essential in slippery terrain, including leafy, root-y tracks. Micro-spikes seems to be a popular choice of hikers here in New England, and I appreciate their toughness and easy packability. Cheers.

Hi George, thanks a lot for taking the time to make contact. You'd be amazed how famous our mountain areas are for people not taking them seriously and venturing out ill-equipped!! They wouldn't last 2 minutes in the sorts of proper wilderness areas you have in the US! I thought it might be a timely reminder!

@DGriffGallery 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Jamie, I've been working hard on improving audio lately so that feedback is great 👍Obviously shooting mostly on the coast or mountains, wind is a real issue. I had been trying to keep audio on video to avoid the extra labour of syncing, but found that my equipment wasn't up to it. So now I record audio separately, and with a bit of practise have found that syncing in post isn't too hard now 😀

Cheers Alan. I'd actually waited about 3 weeks for the conditions for this one. When I was there with Paul Compton's group in December, I didn't take a single image. As you know with your locality, you can make the best of the area by picking your moments. I do feel sorry for people who get a bit of time off work, make a special trip here only to get wiped out by the weather. Oh, and don't panic about your waistline, I'm sure you'll reign it in once springtime rolls around and you can get out more 👍😀

Haha you're not the only one complaining about wet feet, Darren Knight got soaked up there in December too! There is a route that avoids the boggiest bits though - but it's hard to follow. Look forward to your vlog / images too and meeting soon hopefully - can't count how many times people have said to me "Oh you must know Jason well". As it happens you were were the very first person I watched on landscape vlogs (not Tom H!!) because I was interested in local spots.
