Dear oh dear oh dear! I've been trying to photograph New Brighton Lighthouse, next to Perch Rock on the Wirral for the past 8 months and I still haven't bagged the shot that I want! In total I've had four trips and I now ask the question, when is enough, actually enough and when should I be satisfied by what I get, rather than chasing the seemingly impossible?

I'm 71yrs. old ... Failure is the foundation of success ... My photography has been for the most part has been rather lackluster, but I still want to learn and every now and then I have success! Your honest interpretation of landscape photography with all the ups and downs is what keeps young and old photographers like myself trekking over mountains, streams and valleys... While others are snoozing in their warm bed. Keep up your with your vlogs. They have a great influence on young photographers and occasionally a old man!

You are an inspiration Ronald and must still be very fit. I hope I am still doing this in 20 years, but then age is just a number. Keeping healthy is the main thing and I need to stop eating bacon butties. Glad you are enjoying the films. KZbin has been great for photography.

I could not have said it better, Ronald. Indeed, Simon, authenticity is paramount, IMHO, in a successful VLOG. If you only show successes, it's not real, and we amateurs don't get a sense of what to expect and how/why to press on. Please, don't change a thing. I've been an amateur woodworker and photographer for about 47 yrs. now, and decided long ago that with all the ups & downs and failures (mostly), I keep on. The desire to create and learn just won't let up.

it is good to see a honest blog showing the difficulties that we all find looking for the dream image. yet at the same time how many times do we go out with a image in mind and are blown-en away by the scene we are presented with. regards Stephen

Yes Simon love your honesty, this is exactly what KZbin needs. You show the reality of landscape photography. In the last two months I've been to a location five times, the right light makes or breaks the image and we are always at the mercy of the weather....I've still not got the shot I'm looking for and I've asked myself exactly the same question. Obviously it's great to see amazing images but also to see the trials and tribulations that have gone into creating it. Inspirational....thank you!

I can only echo the gist of the many comments below Simon. Your videos are always worth watching, and your honest commentary, and occasional human failings make you one of the most watchable KZbin contributors out there. Keep on doing what you do please - even vids like this peicemeal version are wonderfully honest and give us all hope yet also the knowledge that to fail to get exactly what we'd like sometimes is simply part of the fun of photography.

I think it’s good for people new to landscape photography to see some failures, especially as you explain them so well. This is easily one of my favourite channels, for your skill, encyclopaedic knowledge and your Lancastrian honesty. The fact you are less than ten miles away from me at the other side of the city helps too. You, Paul Miguel, Paul G Johnson and Morten's channels are a breath of fresh air. You are different than the sometimes sterile video where everything goes right all the time, you admit to the challenges you’ve faced and you keep it real. Adam from First Man Photography is another person who is also very real and he too shows how he gets over his challenges which must help hundreds of people. I’ve noticed your channel is growing nicely now, and in such a competitive genre of photography on KZbin you must be doing something right. I had a similar predicament as you had with your phone this morning. I went to RPH for my pain physio and when I got there I realised I didn’t have my wallet and only £2.50 in my pocket. With the new layout it took me twenty minutes from getting my ticket to getting on the disability car park so I only had 40 minutes to get to my appointment, to have my physio and get back to the machine. I did it with one minute to spare! Those situations cause severe panic I’m certainly not against seeing different people photograph the same subject, however, because I can’t get to some of them it’s a bit different for me. I did manage to get to Bamburgh Castle once, but couldn’t get to the black rocks most people use as a leading line into the castle. I was awarded with the most golden golden hour I have ever seen either with or without a camera. My in laws and my brother and sister all shop at Booths though it’s on the other side of Preston for us, St Annes one used to have the best cafe ever You got some stunning images despite your trials and tribulations, I especially like the tide water receding off the rocks it looked gorgeous. I also think this video was easily on par with Norway but for different reasons. I really enjoyed it and I was rooting for you until the end, just keep them coming with you being you and you can't go far wrong.

Hi Mark Every time I post a video, I always look out for and look forward to your comment. I too watch the names that you have mentioned. Paul Miguel and me started at roughly the same time so we share ideas and results over email. Both our channels are growing and it's a great feeling to have such great support. As a photographer of so many years, it's amazing to suddenly feel part of a massive community. I have written for many magazines over the years but other than a pay cheque at the end, there is no sense of appreciation for your efforts. KZbin has made such a difference. I only wish I had posted something along these lines when I joined in 2007. All the best Simon

I echo all the previous comments, I know no one who gets 100% every time. I enjoyed your video/s and the shots you took. OK they may not have been what you had planned or wanted and in my opinion you beat yourself up (from a viewers point of view) unnecessarily. I have seen many other vloggers but there is only a handful that I subscribe to and look forward to seeing the next one, you being one of them. For me you have a good delivery, great presentation, excellent explanations and quality photographs. Just because you aren't happy with something doesn't mean to say that we aren't either (as my wife often tells me). Keep them coming Simon I'm ready for the next one.

Honesty of effort is good. It creates perspective for those of us who fall short of capturing our own imaginings of any particular image. Often as we learn from various bloggers only the fantastic and seemingly unachievable ( to the occasional/serious hobbyist ) images are shown. For many of us it is the process of being out in nature and learning or honing new skills that keeps our interest. I always admire your approach of taking us through your scouting, decision making, set up and execution of your images. For one, I will continue to follow your channel as long as you continue to help us learn, be it through failures or successes. By the way, if I had captured some of your "failures" they would be up on my wall. Thanks for keeping at it. Bill

Personally, I think it’s as good to see the journey as the end result. I learn more from your thought process than the final image and it’s always enjoyable to come along for the ride. I can understand the pressure to finish with an amazing image but that really isn’t going to happen very often and I think it’s good to see the reality. Anyway, keep up the good work.

You shouldn't let any 'photo-fails' stop you from posting the respective video. They are two different things (pre-visualised photo and the video capturing its making). All photographers know things don't always work out in the field as intended and often we walk away with less than we planned for. But the trip, even if it is about the 'failed or unrealised -shot' is always worth it. After all learning from failure is one of the most common ways of learning. Let history judge if the alleged failures are as watched/liked as much as the alleged successes. You just carry on with the good work and keep posting the videos. It's all wonderful.

The failures are just as important (If not more important) than the success's Simon, reason being that us mere mortals can see that failures can and do happen to prominent Landscape Photographers such as yourself, hobbyists like myself more often than not go out and come back with more failures than success's, which can be a bit disheartening at times, so to see these types of videos lets us see that its not all about great shots every week its about getting out there and enjoying your hobby and going back to a favourite location time after time till that successful shot is captured, keep up the good work, its so good to see a presenter that just wants to share his passion for the art.

Thanks Stuart. Rest assured that I too have had and still have many failures. Of late I have been doing a lot more close up work, which is more dependant on the ability to see images as opposed to being completely at the mercy of the weather. You have drawn my attention to an idea this morning though! I should perhaps do a bit more landscape work again but demonstrate the value on falling back on other subjects as the weather dictates.

@@SimonBoothPhotography Hi Simon, would look forward to seeing those videos, I’m predominantly a Landscape Photographer but I’ve been looking at your macro videos this past week which are so inspirational, not as easy as you make it (lol) You got me out with a macro lens for the first time last week and I really struggled, the lens is only borrowed (105mm) but I’ll get another few cracks at it before I need to hand it back, I thought it would be an alternative to Landscapes when the weather isn’t playing ball, your videos are really helpful and I’ve learned much from them not only in Macro but in all genres, keep up the good work, I’m currently binge watching all your posts just now with a cuppa tea 👍

Lovely, as always. And yes, Simon, by all means show some failures and frustrations. It's part of the job. I had a failure just this morning with a recalcitrant stump and melting ice in a pond. It looked so good in the viewfinder, but I just couldn't get it to work in post, so ended up chucking a boatload of RAW files. But the success isn't so much in the getting as in the trying, and you do such a good job of showing us the wonder (and sometimes subtle humor: queue the lost phone), in the effort. So, forge on through the muck and wrack and show us everything!

Two shots of New Brighton Lighthouse with original compositions - ok so the sky didn't play to your expectations, I think you did really well despite it and got two images worth having. I particularly liked the first one with the swirling water coming over the groyne. As for showing your failures, I wish all the youtube photographers did this - it might be inspiring to see epic images in mindblowing 4K captured surroundings all the time but it doesn't teach one much. Sure, inspiration is incredibly useful but to see when and why things don't work out not only helps to make better decisions, but helps viewers feel less bad about their own photographic disasers. On a similar note, I appreciate your restraint in not always rattling off exposure info - this is usually too specific to the situation to be of real use to others later - and it makes photography channels all sound the same. Keep up the excellent work!

Hi Simon, as a new subscriber to your channel , personally i don't think you need to change anything you are very descriptive in your presentation and most importantly you don't waffle you explain your compositions excellently and your photography is superb, living here in Queensland I envy you your weather and I also do not believe that you always have to have a beautiful pink sky to have a successful landscape/seascape shoot, I'm coming over to the U.K next year and the New Brighton Lighthouse will be on my to do list along with a 5 day side trip to Iceland. I really enjoy your vlogs so please keep them coming and thank you for them.

Sounds like you are in for a great trip David. I don't mind any light as long as the subject lends itself to it. I had a pre-visualised shot for this one, but that's not always the case. Often I will shoot what the light dictates as this gives me the freedom to get out as often as time allows. I's amazing to think that the films are being watched by such a wide audience. Thanks for writing and I wish you every success with your trip. One piece of advice though; take an umbrella to New Brighton lighthouse :-)

One aspect that I particularly want to experience is the whole journey of your experience, whether you come away with an outstanding image is irrelevant. Photography would be pointless and somewhat boring as a pastime if one could shoot exceptional images everytime we venture out, I want to see the human side of things in your work. Hope this helps Simon. On a side note, I, like you, are Lancashire born and bred, however I now live in Queensland, Australia and only took up photography four years ago and always regret not having taken it earlier when I lived in the North West. Its a shame that you have scrapped the failed ones. I think Its just a natural process of landscape photography, whereby every time you plan the shoot with the tidal times, sun positions and weather etc, sometimes it just doesn't happen on the day, but when it does happen, that little tingle of excitement knowing you have bagged the shot is special. Sometimes the photo sadist In me enjoys that chase for the perfect day every time, although it gets you down also at times. Keep up the good work Simon, and look forward to others. PS. If you're ever back in Suffolk or Norfolk I would be happy to say hello if I'm not at work.

Hi Paul I agree, the chase and failures is what makes it all the more amazing when it does come together. I find it hard to explain though how it makes me feel inside. I think showing the rerality of going out, working hard and some days not getting the shot is a good idea. I am about to go live with a channel and I have been building up content with this exact thing in mind. My channel is basically going to be learning through failure and trial. Also, documenting that pressure to grab the "perfect shot" each time is something that I think people should understand. After a couple of discussions with people who are frustrated beginners it really made me think about this. Their comments were basically "well, you always get a great shot every time". I laughed and showed one of them my LightRoom catalogs. Thousands of images, only a few "photographs". I think it helps to remove this unrealistic pressure and expectation we may be creating of always getting the shot. So, my hope is, to see you move in that direction and I hope others follow.

Before making films for KZbin, I used to work on less than 10% success rate. That has gone down to much less than that now because filming takes so much more out of the day. Hi Simon, personally I enjoyed watching the trials and tribulations you experienced, and prefer the realism. It makes you realise that everyone goes through these things to get that shot. It is also encouraging when you see the end result to know that perseverance pays off. The final shot was fantastic, and I think actually works better without a colourful sunrise. I like the feeling of isolation in the picture. As stunning as a great sunrise or sunset can be, I feel that they sometimes become too much the feature of the shot and take away from the actual content and the real anchor of the picture (in this case, the lighthouse) sometimes less is more. Keep up the fantastic videos. Really love the explanations you give, in pointing out your thoughts as to why you set up as you did, and where you are focusing etc. Great content. There are too many arty style vlogs nowadays with the compulsory drone work and minute after minute of no shots being taken or talked about. Yours are very refreshing and honest, and have the feel of being out with a friend on a shoot. Keep it as you are, with all the successes and tribulations. Regards, Tony

Thanks Tony, that's a very kind thing to say. There are so many good people in the photographic community, which we were never aware of before KZbin. I'm honoured that so many people enjoy my channel and have such great things to say. Every outing has it's differences and the hope is that the viewer gets as much out of watching it as I do shooting it. I too watch other channels and get a great deal of enjoyment from them. Better than telly! I was more than happy with the image in the end. That's why I concluded the video. I just wasn't sure on the day and needed to see it big screen. My plan going forward is to have as much variety in the channel as possible. A channel that has some educational aspects along with making you want to get out for yourself and enjoy the experience. love the quietness of the countryside and want to bring this to others.

Simon, this is the first of your videos I have watched and subscribed straight away. I enjoyed your style and the information you shared. As to your question as to whether to continue adding to the video with more attempts at the New Brighton Lighthouse, my opinion is that you should. I would like to see where you take this. I have been taking snapshots for a long time and only in the past few years have started shooting with purpose. I guess I am still developing my own style. I have sometimes questioned the results of a mornings shooting thinking, why cant I get any decent shots. It is heartening to see that even photographers as experienced as yourself also have bad days and also make mistakes. Thankyou for the inspiration. I have come to realise that Nature and the weather will always have the final say on just how a landscape photo turns out but it is still up to the photographer to recognise the potential of the scene as it unfolds. I have added this location to my list of UK locations to visit next time I get over there from Australia.

Hi Andrew, Thanks for checking in and leaving a comment! It's very much a misconception that seasoned photographers always get the best images. There are three things that help to get success in this game. (1) Is frequency (I live and breathe photography and have done for a very long time; it pretty much courses through my veins), the more you get out, the more good days you will have...simple! (2) Developing your eye for a good image by looking at lots of high end images. Look at only the very best work so you set the bar high for yourself; Competition winners are a good place to start. (3) Processing is so important and is what takes any image to the next level. Shoot RAW files not jpgs and invest in some good software to process the files. I use Photoshop and Lightroom and within these, use luminosity masking to get great dynamic range in my shots. The best of luck!

Hi Simon, I am 62 now and most of my major lessons in life have come from failure so why should it not be any different in your Vlogs. If you feel you have failed and explain why then we can all learn from that as well, and maybe not make the same mistake ourselves. As for your last image and the leading lines, when I first viewed the photo my eye was let to the lighthouse by the curved seaweed covered rock in between the two channels which is probably why it looked right to you when you took the image. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping me entertained on rainy days.

If it wasn't for bad luck Gary, I wouldn't have any luck at all. I suspect you've heard that saying!? Bizarrely, I would say judging by the comments here, over 90% of viewers would rather see the fails so that they are reassured that even seasoned photographers get bad shots. I normally adapt my subject matter to suit the weather, which you seem to as well, which increases the hit rate. I suspect most that are new to photography, decide on a subject for the day and stick with it come what may...something for us to think about!

I too have may times been up at 4 and 5 only for the light and the subject not to appear( wildlife ) your final image is great. Idea wise for your vlogs add some wildlife in as well rather than trying to do so many landscapes as its so light dependant just to break it up a little that way you may just have some luck and its now heading towards what i call real spring .just a thought

Beautiful final image, well worth the extra trips! By all means more videos are better, even the ones that don't produce a final image you are happy with. Many of us tune in to see how other photographers work so watching your "process" is welcome.

Yes, please show the good and the bad. I’m glad you wrapped this one up, but I would enjoy seeing you go back. So when is enough, enough? Well, for me a 15ish minuet video is enough, but more on the same subject would be fine in the future. The ultimate when is enough, enough is when we as the photographer has achieved the image we set out for or when we finally feel beaten by that subject-lol cheers, G

Yes I agree, I worry about putting films out longer than 12 or 13 minutes. My partner says that 9 or 10 minutes is plenty. Perhaps that's because she has to listen to me all the time:-)

Playing catch up on your channel. The shot of the Lighthouse was superb, loved the composition, the lines to the right, the dark line to the left and the lighthouse perched (no pun intended) between the points.

Whatever the result Simon I think you should post the results. The effort it takes to create these shouldn't go to waste. Great channel btw.

I thought it was a great way of showing your persistence towards getting the shot you wanted. This video format worked especially well when it led up to the very beautiful picture shown at the end. Even though you had perhaps imagined something else, that was a lovely capture.

Might not have been what you were after, but my goodness they weren’t half bad. I’d have been happy to come home with either of those two images you managed to get.

Lovely photo. I think you should show the failures as well as the great shots, we all fail to get good images when we go out, I know I get nothing more times than I get the good ones. So yes show the fails, we are all human.

Simon having a goal or vision and persistence are what it takes to achieve great results. The people who ultimately fail just gave up. You don't strike me as a person which gives in much. I learn alot watching you work and explain your process. Also really enjoy your images as well. Keep doing exactly as you are and the people who appreciate your style will follow.😉 If you're every doubting your resolve read "The Man in the Arena" by Theodore Roosevelt, it sets my thinking straight again

I wish I could read books Tony. I've tried so many and never get to the end. I need big pictures or big letters to keep me engaged. However, I never give up on an image and I love the chase of getting a good one. I was having concern for you guys. Perhaps I should smile more :-) Thanks for writing and taking the time to watch.

Hi Simon I'm on my way - following you from the beginning. (A late comment on this video) You are a really good photographer. You can make outstanding photos of non iconic locations - one of my mantras. As you lean from a mistake, so do we. To me a good youtube video is about my hobby/interest. In this case photography more than photos. I don't need a new video on a fixed schedule or with no mistake, but a well produced video about photography at your level. Even when mistake is included. Keep up the good work and thanks for the time you offers on this chanel. /Niels Daugaard

I agree with most of the people here who say that "failure" is part of the photographic process. Especially with landscape photography where you are dependent on the weather and whatever light you might be getting at the time, there is not much of a choice. Besides you do live in England where the weather is not perfect. Therefore, I say I don't mind seeing blogs where you don't get the perfect shot every time. At the end of the day creating this illusion it would only discourage people who are learning and would create false expectations. They need to understand that this is something to be expected and not every time we go out with a camera we get THE perfect shot.

I was going to add a full reply but Marieta has said perfectly what I feel. It's the reality of the experience that makes it so worthwhile. Please don't deprive us of that learning experience! And thank you for sharing your efforts!

In don't mind seing you not getting the perfect shot because it simply doesn't exist 😀 And if you happened to take the perfect one then I would pitty you because you would have to stop photography, having achieved the ultimate goal. Landscape photography is also about going places and living them. The quest for the ultimate photograph is merely the engine that keeps us going. Just keep on doing what you do, showing both good and bad 😀

I agree to a large extent Alain, but there are locations where I have got a very good image and doubt in my lifetime and availability, I could do it better...or feel the need to given the world has so much to offer! That said, no, they are never perfect!
