Snow in the Myrtle Beach area! This video is comprised of my three reports on my landscape trial cactus during this polar vortex.
Most of these cactus are doing far better than I expected them to. I think its safe to say the ones that just champ through this polar vortex event are just good here in zone 8b SC. We almost never have temperatures under freezing for as long as they were, and we certainly don't usually get anywhere near 6 inches of snow. This is pretty much as bad as winter can possibly get here.
This winter event is confirming to me that trichocereus species from the tropical Andes simply do not have the adaptations in place to deal with this kind of weather. I think its a combination of lack of spine coverage, skin too thin to sheild the inside of the cactus, and a true winter dormancy leaving them vulnerable. I also suspect that they can't quite cope with nights being longer and thus taking longer to warm up in the morning. All in all, I have far less casualties than I thought I would. Some of these subtropical species have even proven they have the potential to thrive here in Horry County.
