Yup, got my 7-14 Four Thirds lens 10 years ago, thought it was a dream come true and spent my time emphasizing foreground a lot - didn't like straight landscapes or architecture with it. Nice demos in this vlog

Excellent video, Craig. It's very helpful how you show the bad composition then the good composition to really bring out the need to get up close & personal with the foreground. Thanks for sharing!

I have 10-20mm (15-30 full frame) & it took a lot of practice to get my mind set in to seeing & taking images at these focal lengths. Even now I find it very helpful to go out with only the ultra wide lens so so that your mind focuses on only looking for images that suit these focal lengths.Once you get your eye in for seeing this style of pics you do get some great very distinctive images

Good to hear that it can take a filter. I've been trying to pick my next lens, and lack of a way to attach a filter has been keeping me back from settling on any one. Ever since I got a 25mm prime I shoot almost all my landscapes with that lens. I have the 9-18mm and access to a lot of landscapes that are good for wide shots, but the way WA exaggerates landscapes features can make my backgrounds suffer a bit. I want a 12mm prime, but none of them seem to be exactly what I need.

I was also looking at this lens. But I struggle with the immense field of view you get. Also I found that most of my landscapes are shot at 35mm or above. The few times I really want to get wide I usually do panoramics. But it sure seems like a great tool and very well executed in this video. Thanks for the insights, will help a lot with wider perspectives.

I have settled on the Panasonic GX-8 and the Pan-Leica 15 1.7 to start off..It's my emotional replacement for my old film Leicas,, I wanted the Olympus Pen-F soooo badly but the 2019 price,,almost double for a nice Pen-F ,,and the extra video capability of the GX-* converted me...OK--My new task,,making my way through your channel archives---

Great video as usual, Craig. I've been using a Canon FD 24mm on my a7 for the last year and agree, 24mm is the sweet spot for focal length in landscape. Picked up a Sony Zeiss 16-35mm lens recently but have thought of going back to the Canon 24mm a few times! I love the colours and sharpness in the 16-35 but have struggled to get it right. Your video has explained where I think I've been going wrong regarding 'filling the frame' and paying more attention to the foreground. The ones that I have been happy with, bear out what you have said.

One of the best bits of advice and reviews I have seen in ages. I think when people 1st get a wa lens it's a novelty. I certainly went down that route but these days find myself using the 24-70 more than the wa 17-40 (on FF) that I have. As you say there are times when it will be of use - I find seascapes with a low pov work well - but it is to be used sparingly.

Of all your videos I've watched, this one helped me the most. I've struggled at times with a wide angle lens. Essentially I do OK. Your samples helped me see what I have been missing at times. I've had to crop to get a better composition. But I will do better to capture in camera.

Hi Craig you can have the same filter issues with one of the fuji lenses a good work around is get a second 7five filter holder and remove one pair of slots and cut down the screw at back of holder. This moves the polarised closer to the end of the lens and you still have a slot for a grad. Works great on fuji 10 24 👍

I've had this lens for about four months now and totally agree with this review. It's a fantastic lens but I was guilty of trying to use it too much at first, even when the subject didn't warrant it. Still trying to work out a polariser option I trust (not blu-tac) as I use the Seven5 as well.
@PekkoAhlsten6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Can this lens take the Seven5 polariser at any focal length? Lets say if you zoom in to 10mm, still vignetting? I'm considering this lens and I use the Seven5 system.

Thank you for this video. . . Sorry for this long comment just wanted to add my thoughts even though they weren’t ask for (why do we do that). The images. . . While your discussion about the lens was interesting I was busy watching the composition and lighting of the finished images; very nice, plus you always inspire me to get out there, enjoy the landscapes and shoot with the lessons learned. The lens. . . I have been shooting for more than 30 years and I have had many lenses during that time, in the end I always ended up using the focal range of 24mm to about 50mm for most of my landscapes. I am often temped to try new lenses with less and also more, but I let the fire of desire die down and continue to use my 24 - 105mm.

Hi I don't really understand why, if you prefer shooting landscapes at 24mm full frame equivalent, you see this as occasional use only for landscape. 8-18 has the 24mm full frame equivalent bang in the middle at 12mm ( X2= 24). I would have thought it ideal! Cheers

Great video. The overview of the lens is very helpful. You mentioned several times that this isn't a lens that you'd use a lot due to your preference for the 24mm angle of view. I've shot most of my landscapes using the the Panasonic 12-35 2.8 v.1 and I'm happy with it for what it is. I figured that the 8-18 might provide a little more flexibility as there is rarely a need to shoot faster than f/4 and you can compose in and around that 16-35 angle of view without having to switch lenses? Do you find yourself shooting landscapes in the 35-70 mm angle of view often? Thanks in advance for your answer.

Really helpful stuff about compositions and removing the empty spaces of the photo. I too bought this lens recently and have struggling with composition. I am planning a hiking trip this weekend and will surely give these tips a shot. :+1: There is one question that I have. Are the pictures straight out of camera? I always have trouble with exposing correctly when there is difference in lighting of foreground and background. Would you suggest using the HDR mode in some of the latest panasonic cameras, or should I take multiple exposures and blend them later?

What ND filter would you use for the Leica 8-18mm. Would you opt for a variable or a fixed ND of around 5or 6 stops? I noticed on my Sigma 10-20 lens with the GH5 and a Genustech Variable ND I had a lot of X Cross Effects - especially on the wider apertures and even up to f5.6.
