I was an early reader, my brother was struggling to learn to read because he was hard of hearing and he was in summer school and the teacher gave my mom tips to help him with and told her to use his comic books as inspiration because he loved comic books. So I was 4 and sitting nearby them while they were working and I heard everything my mom told him and one day I had my favorite book Harry the Dirty Dog and was reading it out loud and my mom asked me what I was doing and of course I just said reading and she thought I had the book memorized so she gave me a different book and told me to read it and I did to which she was shocked!! I was the only one in my kindergarten class that could read and the teacher didn’t like that I could read already so when it was “library” time I just sat away from everyone else and really practiced silent reading. The librarian came over to me one day and asked why I had the book I had that it wasn’t really at my level because it wasn’t a “picture” book, I told her in a very quiet whisper that I can already read and those books were boring. She didn’t believe me so she sat down and told me to read to her. I didn’t want to get in trouble from my teacher because she always said I was just showing off when I read out loud but I did it and the librarian was amazed. She called my mom and told her that I needed to be in first grade and she also had the first grade teacher evaluate me who agreed. My parents said no to skipping kindergarten and I wish they had let me skip it because kindergarten was a horrible experience for me with a teacher who always thought I was just “showing off”. I just wanted to learn. I love to read and get lost in books and sadly none of my kids are readers like me. My two that I homeschooled didn’t read until they were 8 but that’s okay because I only taught phonetics and my son was reading he just wasn’t confident enough to realize it and my daughters eyesight was horrible(we didn’t know) so once she got glasses she took off reading in no time.

Cj was reading at 4. The others have varied. Maddie’s in the first grade Sunday school class at church and was told last week that if she can’t read she needs to go back to the kinder class. It made me mad because she’s on the verge of reading but she doesn’t like sounding out words for anyone but me and she is not very confident yet but will be. She’s only six so it’s ridiculous they said that. Bub loves the graphic novels/comics. He is doing well with them and I think they aren’t so overwhelming since they have pics.

@@TubbsOfLove my son was like Maddie it was his confidence that held him back and he wouldn’t practice with his dad even just me. The day that light bulb went on was so wonderful and he couldn’t wait for his dad to get home from work so he could show him he could read. Six months later he was reading college level books like Sherlock Holmes novel’s!! My father in law who didn’t think I could homeschool was shocked and amazed.

@@TubbsOfLove my husband loved it more because his dad kept coming down on him every time he saw him and asking if he could read yet because our nephew who is the same age and going to public school was already reading(sight words and memorization) so when our son was sitting on the sofa and grandpa asked him if the book had interesting pictures and my son said it didn’t have pictures. Grandpa looked shocked and asked what he was reading then and my son stated plainly Sherlock Holmes and my father in law looked at me and then picked up the book and looked at it(never lost my son’s place) and handed it back to him and just walked away without saying anything 😂. Later my husband said his dad was in total shock and was amazed that he was literally reading a novel already to which my husband asked yeah is our nephew reading novels yet? My childrens reading skills far surpasses a lot of public school students reading skills. We didn’t homeschool our oldest sadly but I really worked with him at home on phonics and he reads better than others his age. Just be patient with Maddie and she will get there, as to the Church I think I would go have a conversation with the teacher and if that doesn’t work then talk to whomever is in charge of the classes and then to the Pastor if need be.

@@desertfamilyhomestead3127 thank you for the positive feedback on this 😍 I’m a firm believer that kids learn in their own time and we can’t force that. She is a very busy girl and right now, her interests are mostly animals, dinosaurs, stitch, and Bluey. But she does her school work and usually extra with no complaint. She will get there.
